This month's newsletter will focus on how to increase
your metabolism, and how to feed muscle while starving fat.
Through regular exercise and a proper diet, you can completely
transform your body, getting rid of unattractive, unhealthy body
fat while building lean healthy muscle.  The fact is, one without
the other will not provide you with desirable results.  The
proper combination of diet and exercise will allow you to
increase your metabolism, increase or maintain your lean body
mass, decrease your body fat percentage, and build your best body
ever!

WARNING!!  Always seek the advice of a Medical Doctor before
starting any diet or exercise program.

There are several things you can do to increase your
metabolism.  If your schedule permits, exercise first thing in
the morning, as soon as you get up.  Weight training and
cardiovascular exercise immediately increase your basal metabolic
rate and will keep your metabolism at a higher rate for several
hours after you have finished.

Don't starve yourself!  Your body has a built-in survival
mechanism that kicks in when you are not eating enough.  It will
automatically lower your metabolism.  You want to "fuel the fire"
by eating four to five compact meals a day, spread approximately
three hours apart to keep your metabolism high.  Eat smaller
amounts of food, more often.  Animals like horses and deer that
eat almost constantly but in far lesser amounts, (grazers) have
very low bodyfat percentages and lots of lean muscle.  Have you
ever seen a fat deer?  Eating small portions often will
accelerate your metabolism, so you burn more calories.

Always eat breakfast, skipping breakfast is a big mistake.  If
you are not accustomed to eating in the morning, eat a meal
replacement bar or shake, or at least eat a piece of fruit to
jump-start your metabolism.

If you are a coffee or tea drinker - great!  Caffeine is not the
healthiest substance in the world, but it will increase your
metabolism.  The best way to drink your coffee is black.  If you
cannot stomach your coffee or tea straight, only drink one or two
cups a day and go light on the dairy and sugar.

A diet that is high in carbohydrates works against your body, not
with it.  When you eat too many carbs over a long period of time,
your body becomes insulin resistant and you can develop adult
onset diabetes, not to mention heart disease, obesity, and a
myriad of other health problems.  When your insulin levels are
elevated, your body does not burn fat.  Your body works much
better with the proper balance of protein and carbohydrates.

Protein is essential for building healthy muscle and will supply
you with higher energy levels because of it's effect on insulin
and blood sugar.  Most people that I deal with are carb junkies.
By slightly increasing your protein intake, decreasing (not
eliminating) your carbohydrate intake, and eating a low fat diet,
you can burn fat and still maintain or increase your lean body
mass.  It is important that you eat at least one small complex
carb meal a day, (baked potato, brown rice, pasta) and at least
two servings of fruit and vegetables which are non-complex
carbohydrates.  Avoid all other carbs like the plague if you are
interested in getting lean.

For decreasing your body fat percentage, I recommend 50% protein,
30% carbs, and 20% fat.  Many so-called experts will disagree
with this philosophy and preach a high carbohydrate, low fat, low
protein nutrition plan.  Over the last 10 years, we have
continued to see a dramatic rise in obesity because of these
dietary habits and recommendations.

If you just diet without exercise, you are going to lose both fat
and lean body mass.  Remember, it is not just muscle that makes
up your lean body mass.  Your heart, liver and other internal
organs fall into this category as well.  Combining strength
training and cardiovascular exercise with the proper balance of
protein, carbs, and fat will allow you to burn fat, while feeding
your lean body mass.  I call this principle "use it, or lose it."

Most people's goals are to build muscle and/or lose bodyfat.  How
do you know if you are on the right path?  Your scale is not the
answer.  Take front, back, and side photos of yourself every four
weeks, and compare them side to side.  Your clothes and mirror
will also be valuable tools, but if you really want to truly
measure your progress, have your body composition measured on a
regular basis.

Next month's newsletter will focus on injuries and how to treat
them for fast recovery.
