                         "Pay The Piper"
                      by Dr. Robert Osgoodby

Let's face it, most people enjoy cardiovascular exercise as much
as a visit to the their oral surgeon - or - spending the weekend
with their in-laws.  Most people's idea of the perfect
cardiovascular exercise program is walking from the bedroom to
the bathroom.  If you want to decrease your body fat percentage,
get ripped, and have your waist, legs, and rear end look like a
million dollars, there is no substitution for cardio - but it
doesn't have to be boring and a major chore you hate.

Select cardiovascular exercises that you enjoy doing.  If you
hate to run, it is going to be very hard for you to get up every
morning at 6:00 AM and run for 30 minutes.  Choose an exercise
that you enjoy doing.  Walking, crawling, jogging, running,
bicycling, stairmaster, nordic ski machine, cross trainer,
rowing, swimming, aerobics, trampoline, martial arts, dance,
basketball, soccer, fencing, gymnastics, sex, and mud wrestling
are just a few of the hundreds of exercises that will take your
heart rate and keep it in the fat burning zone for what ever time
is appropriate for your present condition.  If you enjoy a
certain activity, you are more likely to do it on a routine
basis.  Select exercises that are good for you.

Cardiovascular exercise provides you with a multitude of
benefits.  It increases your metabolic rate which burns body fat,
increases blood flow to your brain and major organs, improves
digestion, reduces stress, increases alertness, and boosts your
immune system.

Research supports that getting your cardiovascular exercise out
of the way, first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach is
best for fat burning.  Some sources state that you can burn up to
3 times as much fat per hour exercising on an empty stomach.
There are several medical conditions including hypoglycemia which
would be a contraindication from you doing any type of exercise
on an empty stomach.  That is why it is imperative that you have
a comprehensive medical examination before starting any
cardiovascular exercise program.

I realize cardiovascular exercise can be boring, but there are
several things that you can do to make it more enjoyable, and
also make it seem to go by faster.  If you go to any up-scale
health club today, there is a television set in front of every
cardiovascular station.  Television, radio, and educational audio
tape series all help keep your mind focused on something other
than the chore at hand.

Don't waste this valuable time staring in space.  Learn Spanish,
French, or Japanese.  Catch up on the latest marketing tips in
your field of expertise.  Lose yourself in the latest audio
romance series by your favorite author.  Learn how to be a
better mother, father, lover or Bridge player.  Study trivia just
in case one day, you come face to face with Regis.  Slap on a
Walkman and listen to whatever interests you.  You will be amazed
how quickly your cardiovascular exercise will be over.

Sometimes, you will find yourself spending five, ten, even twenty
minutes more time exercising because you are caught up in what
you are listening to.

There have been many times I have been amazed that thirty minutes
have gone by because I have been pre-occupied with something
else, and not watching the seconds tick away on the treadmill or
stairmaster.  Listen to something you really enjoy.

Regular cardiovascular exercise is not something that comes
natural to most people unless you are already a fanatic.  When I
first started training, I hated doing cardio.  It takes a little
time, but just like anything else, if you do it long enough, it
becomes part of your daily routine.  Your day won't feel complete
unless you have done it. Kind of like a morning without orange
juice.  Plus, cardiovascular exercise releases endorphins into
your system which will give you a natural high and make you feel
great.  This kind of high doesn't cost you $1,000.00 a week, give
you nose bleeds, make you cough, or destroy your brain, liver or
lungs.

Each edition includes a response to a question received from
our subscribers.  We answer all questions, however those that we
think will be of interest to a number of people, we will feature
here.

-----

Dear Bob:

I am a female, 5'2" and I weigh 155 lbs.  I have been strictly
dieting and counting calories for the last four months.  I am on
a diet of 1800 calories a day and I eat 4 times a day.  I walk
twenty minutes at a medium pace, 3 days a week.  I have bee n
losing weight slowly, but have only lost 4 lbs. over the last 4
months.  I would like to get faster results and am starting to
get discouraged.  Please help!!

Shannon

-----

Dear Shannon:

The first thing I would do is increase your frequency and
duration of cardiovascular exercise.  If you are comfortable
doing 20 minutes per session, slowly over time try and increase
each session to 30 minutes.  Instead of doing 3 days a week, kick
it up to five days a week.

This alone should provide you with the results you are looking
for.  If not, you may have a slow metabolism and may need to
decrease your caloric intake down to 1600 calories a day until
you reach your goal weight.

Before you decrease your caloric intake, increase your cardio as
I have described above.  Monitor your results for two months.  If
you are not losing weight at a faster pace, e-mail me your stats
and I will make the appropriate suggestions.

The taste buds are arranged on the tongue based on what they are
sensitive to. The buds that can taste bitterness are in the back,
the sour and salty buds in the middle and sweet ones at the
front.

                      "Start Your Engines!"
                         By James Groves

How do you start your engine each day?  Do you treat your engine
like you're a race car driver and give it only the finest, high
quality, high octane fuel?  Or do you run it close to empty and
tell yourself "I don't have time this morning to fill up. I'll do
it later."

A good, health breakfast will have an impact on your level of
energy for the entire day.  Recent studies have shown that both
teens and adults are more alert and productive than those who
skip this most important meal.  In fact, eating breakfast can
help with weight control because those who skip breakfast are
more likely to overeat at the next meal or snack between meals.
If you're passing up breakfast to flatten that tummy, you're on
the wrong track.

I personally enjoy breakfast, it's one of my favorite meals. I
stop each morning about 9:00 and I have either oatmeal with whole
wheat toast or once in a while I treat myself to a real southern
breakfast.  This breakfast would include grits (fiber), one egg,
a biscuit with jelly (not butter) and one cup of coffee.  This is
my fuel to start my engine for the day.

Here are some quick, easy to prepare suggestions for adults and
children.  Start your day with oatmeal.  I'm suggesting an
instant kind which I know isn't as healthy as the slow cooking,
but if time is short, it's better than nothing. Complete this
meal with fresh squeezed carrot or vegetable juice (which you can
do the night before) or fresh fruit and include a bagel or whole
wheat toast.  I suggest you use the fruit spread instead of
butter.

Another suggestion would be whole grain cereal, with fat free or
skim milk, and fruit or juice.  Also yogurt mixed with raisins or
diced fruit is a favorite with kids.

Whatever you choose, make breakfast the first fuel stop in the
morning.  If you missed our healthy juice recipe from last week
we'll be happy to send it along to you.

                Dr. Earl Mindell's Wellness Update
                ==================================

According to a report from the American Academy of Family
Physicians 1999 Scientific Assembly, as many as 5 percent of
patients who go to their primary care physicians are depressed.
Mainstream medicine's answer to this crisis is for doctors to
prescribe one of twenty-two available antidepressant medications.

Antidepressant drugs are near the top of the most-prescribed drug
list.  Eight new antidepressants hit the market in the last eight
years.  The question becomes, is depression really on the rise,
or has aggressive drug company marketing convinced us that we
need to be medically treated for every temporary (and possibly
normal) case of the blues?  Antidepressants carry with them many
adverse effects, some subtle and others devastating.

I believe that if you are feeling depressed, you should first try
a natural remedy such as a St. John's Wort. German and American
research has shown that St. John's Wort may be effective in
promoting positive feelings of well being. It is gentler, works
within two to three days and has fewer side effects than the
powerful pharmaceutical drugs.
