How To Sift Through Food Manufacturer's Hype
And Properly Decipher Deceptive Food Labels

With today's health conscious consumer, food manufacturers are
well aware that a primary concern of the public is health and
eating healthy foods.  Since marketing plays a huge role in
product sales, marketing tactics paint a blurry picture designed
to entice you, not educate you.

In an effort to provide the public with what they want, food
manufacturers use unclear marketing statements like "Reduced Fat"
and "98% Fat Free."  Beware of products boasting these types of
claims.  Just because a product label claims "reduced fat" or
"light" doesn't mean it's healthy, or low in fat.

There are several marketing descriptions companies use to coax
you to purchase a lower fat version of a product.  The best way
to protect yourself and not fall prey to misleading marketing
tactics is to learn how to properly read product labels and
interpret common marketing catch phrases.

* Low Calorie - Fewer than 40 calories per serving.
* Low Fat - 3 grams of fat or less per serving.
* Low Cholesterol - 20 milligrams of cholesterol or less per
serving, and 2 grams or less of saturated fat per serving.
* Low Sodium - 140 milligrams or less per serving.
* Very Low Sodium - 35 milligrams or less per serving.
* Lean - Less than 10 grams of fat, 4.5 grams of saturated fat,
and less than 95 milligrams of cholesterol per serving.
* Extra Lean - Less than 5 grams of fat, 2 grams of saturated
fat, and 95 milligrams of cholesterol per serving.
* Fat Free - Less than 0.5 grams of fat per serving
* Light - Half the fat of the regular version
* Reduced Fat - 25% less fat than the regular version

Whenever you are reading a label, the important things to take
into consideration for weight management are:

1. The number of calories per serving
2. The number of servings per container
3. Calories from fat
4. Calories per gram - For instance, whole milk has 9 fat
calories per gram, 4 carbohydrate calories per gram, and 4
   protein calories per gram.

Milk is probably the number one product that the public has
misconceptions about.  Regular whole milk is about 50% fat!  Out
of 150 calories per serving, 70 calories come from fat.  Many
consumers falsely believe that 1% milk contains only 1% of the
fat that whole milk contains.  This is just another unsavory
advertising tactic.  The fact is that in 2% milk, 40% of the
calories come from fat, and in 1% milk, 30% of the calories come
from fat.  Although they are lower in fat than whole milk, by no
means are they healthy and low in fat.

Recently, I tried Tuscan's Supreme Milk which is 100% fat free
and I have to say, it wasn't bad.  It is only 100 calories per
serving with 0 calories from fat.  It tastes similar to 2% milk
while providing you with all of the nutritional benefits of skim
milk.

Another thing that can mislead consumers is serving size.  Many
times you will look at a product believing that the container
contains one serving, and the caloric and nutritional breakdown
are accurate for the entire container.  For instance, a can of
tuna may state that there are 70 calories per serving, but when
you look at the number of servings in the can, it reads
approximately two and a half.

By reading labels and understanding the food manufacturers
marketing jargon, you can sift through the hype, and make
healthy, intelligent food choices.  The next time you head to the
store to stock up on "healthy foods", don't forget your reading
glasses!

Two Yuppettes were shopping. When they started to discuss their
home lives, one said, "Seems like all Alfred and I do anymore is
fight. I've been so upset, I've lost 20 pounds."

"Why don't you just leave him then?" asked her friend.

"Oh! Not yet." the first replied, "I'd like to lose at least
another fifteen pounds first."

Dear Bob:

I've been on the program and hitting it hard for the last 6
weeks, I have been losing weight and getting great results, but I
seem to be retaining water.  I eat a Lean Cuisine every night for
dinner, and recently read they are high in sodium.  If I decrease
my sodium intake, will that help me get rid of the water?  Should
I stop eating Lean Cuisine's?

Sincerely Tara

-----

Dear Tara:

Great question!  I just happened to have several Lean Cuisine's
in my freezer so my research for your question is convenient.
The average Lean Cuisine contains about 520 mg. of sodium which
is 21% of the RDA for a 2,000 calorie diet.  This is a little bit
higher than the average meal for sodium, but if you are only
eating one a day and are monitoring your sodium intake on your
other meals, you can stick with your Lean Cuisines.  To reduce
water retention, you should try and take in no more than 2,000 mg
of sodium a day.

Warmly,

Dr. Robert Osgoodby

Asparagus is actually a member of the lily family, thus a cousin
to the onion, though it bears no resemblance in appearance or

                    Sugar or Sugar Substitutes

This month's health tip is in response to a subscriber's
questions about sugar substitutes.  But before I begin, I'd like
to thank Cindy for bringing up this issue and her honest concern
for good health. She wrote and asked me if there were any
benefits to using regular sugar over any possible side effects to
using sugar substitutes.

I was trying to think back to a time when I did use and enjoy
sugar.  One fond memory I have is of my Grandmother melting brown
sugar in butter and then pouring it over a plain cake.  But the
buzz word here is "brown sugar."  She used a natural, unbleached
sugar.  If you enjoy the taste of sugar, try to find something
like this, that's natural and then only use a small amount.

Sugar substitutes are just what the name implies, substitutes,
something artificial or chemically produced.  One such example
that is used extensively is aspartame.  It has several very real,
and very risky side effects.  It can cause seizures in people
with phenylketonuria, a metabolic disorder that makes it
difficult to break down phenylalanine, an amino acid found in
aspartame.  And there have been reports of aspartame's connection
to headaches, and in severe cases it has caused other allergy
like symptoms.

Here are my suggestions for those of you who enjoy the sweet
taste of sugar.  Eat lots of fruit.  Most of them are naturally
sweetened with fructose.  And unless you are specifically
allergic to certain fruits, these "sugars" won't cause you any
problems.  Try using honey instead of sugar.  If you really
insist on using sugar, use less of it.  Try to find natural
sugars, ones that aren't refined or bleached.

Join me next month and we'll talk about ways to get a good
night's sleep. These health tips can only be found in Dr.
Osgoodby's Body Transformations Newsletter.

                Dr. Earl Mindell's Wellness Update
                ==================================

Allergies are the result of the immune system overreacting to an
irritant such as dust mites, pollen, perfumes air pollutants, pet
dander, foods, etc.  Try to identify and avoid whatever it is
that sets them off. This isn't so easy in the case of seasonal
allergies, so it's even more important to focus on strengthening
the immune system itself. Drinking at least 8-10 glasses of clean
water daily, getting eight hours of sleep each night, and
supplementing your diet with vitamins, minerals, and herbs are a
few basic steps to keeping your immune system in tip-top shape.

Some allergy sufferers tend to turn to antihistamines.
Antihistamines are a temporary fix that don't deal with the
underlying problems involved with allergies and they are riddled
with side effects. Limit their use to no more than a few weeks at
a time, or better yet -- avoid them all together.

Instead, take advantage of benefits of a number of supplements
that are especially effective against allergies.
Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), for example, is a form of organic
sulfur that works as a natural antihistamine, blocking the
effects of histamine on sensitive tissues in the nasal passages,
the lungs, and on the skin. MSM relieves symptoms like runny
nose, watery eyes, and difficult breathing. I suggest you take
MSM in tablet or powder form, starting at 3 to 10 grams daily.

MSM should always be taken with vitamin C for better absorption,
which is convenient since vitamin C is a super natural remedy for
allergies in its own right. It directly lowers histamine levels
in the body, supports the adrenal glands that produce allergy-
fighting hormones and supports the immune system in many ways. I
recommend taking at least 2,000 mg per day.  During allergy
season, you can take an extra 1,000 to 2,000 mg throughout the
day.

Additional immune-boosting supplements and herbs to consider
taking during allergy season include pantothenic acid, quercetin,
echinacea, astragalus, stinging nettle, and Siberian ginseng.
