                Misconceptions About Dietary Fats
                      by Dr. Robert Osgoodby

For decades, the media has been preaching how fats are associated
with obesity, cancer, arteriosclerosis, and heart disease.  Back
in the late 1980's, the U.S. Surgeon General recommended that
Americans decrease their consumption of dietary fats.  Marketing
savvy food manufacturers immediately started coming out with
everything from fat free ice cream to fat free cheese.  In place
of fat, more carbohydrates were added.

With all of the "fat free" marketing, the general public believed
that since something was "fat free", they could eat larger
portions.  Over the next ten years, Americans became fatter than
ever!  Obesity skyrocketed from 12% of the population to over 20%
of the population in just 10 years.  Today, research has found
that 50% of Americans are overweight and approximately 23% are
obese.  With the help of the food industry, the public has
developed a "fat phobia" and the importance of including healthy
fats in our diets has been neglected.

If your goal is to build a stronger, leaner, more muscular body,
dietary fats are necessary to maintain and improve your health,
and play an essential role in reaching your fitness goals.

There are two types of fats, saturated fats and unsaturated fats.
Unsaturated fats are considered healthy fats, they are usually
liquid at room temperature.  Although there are many sources of
unsaturated fat, two great sources of healthy unsaturated fat can
be found in cold water fish like salmon, trout and halibut, and
flax seed oil.

Saturated fats are the unhealthy fats that are associated with a
myriad of health problems.  They contain virtually nothing
nutritious or good for your body, it's only role is it can be
burned as energy.  The fact is, you don't need saturated fats at
all, but the typical diet is jam-packed with them.  For health
reasons, you want to consume as little saturated fats as
possible.  Saturated fats are generally solid at room temperature
and can be found in butter, margarine, dairy, cheese, and meats.
I am not recommending you become a vegetarian and eliminate meat
from your diet, but make sure when you are at the meat counter
you select lean cuts.  You do not have to eat meat every day.
There are many other good non-animal sources of protein including
beans, soy, and tofu.

The truth is, some fats are health promoting and essential to
life itself.  I recently read a great book by Dr. Udos Erasmus,
one of the world's foremost experts on dietary fats.  I highly
recommend you read his best selling book "Fats That Heal, Fat's
That Kill."  Dr. Erasmus believes that eating enough healthy fats
is just as important to maintaining health as eliminating
unhealthy fats.

=== Surgeon ===

A prominent surgeon, who was a member of operating teams at
both St. Francis Hospital and Christ Hospital in the Chicago
area, would operate in the morning, then field calls about his
patients in the evening.

One night, a few dinner guests were quite shocked as the good
doctor was on the phone talking to a resident at Christ Hospital,
when the other phone rang.

His wife answered, then whispered to her husband, "It's St.
Francis calling."

He whispered back, "Tell St. Francis I'll have to call back.
I'm talking to Christ."

Dear Bob:

I have been doing cardiovascular exercise for two years now and
no matter what I do, I just can't seem to lose weight.  I eat
healthy meals, watch my portion sizes and exercise religiously.
My girlfriend told me I probably I have a slow metabolism and
there is nothing I can do?  Is there any hope for me losing
weight?

Tony

Dear Tony

Even though some people use a slow metabolism as just another
excuse, it is true that some overweight people can have slower
metabolisms.  There is something you can do increase your
metabolism.  I highly recommend that you add weight training to
your cardiovascular exercise.  You can increase your muscle mass
using weight training and resistance exercises.  The more muscle
you have, the more calories you burn.

Another thing you can do is eat five or six small healthy meals a
day, rather than the standard three square meals.  Spreading your
caloric intake throughout the day will also help you increase
your metabolism and lose weight.

Warmly,

Dr. Robert Osgoodby

Chronic Fatigue

This month I'm going to tackle the subject of Chronic Fatigue.
For millions of Americans feeling run-down and always tired is a
way of life.  Doctors have come to call these vague symptoms
Chronic Fatigue when actually it is just one symptom of a serious
nutritional deficiency.

One of the primary causes of Chronic Fatigue is the overuse of
prescription drugs.  Be sure you have discussed all the side
effects with your doctor or pharmacist.  If you're still not
sure, purchase a drug book and look up all the side effects for
the drug you are taking.

Another major cause is the American diet.  We eat too many
sweets, and many of us are allergic to common foods such as
peanut butter, white flour, milk, and sugar.  Alter your diet by
eliminating the common allergens and then add them back to your
diet one at a time.  If you find that you are tired and run-down
after returning to eating certain foods, then by all means have a
test for allergies.  The cure could be that simple.

Poor digestion is another cause of Chronic Fatigue.  This is
caused by a lack of stomach acids.  Use an enzyme product for
better digestion.  Of course, none of this is meant to replace
visits to your family physician, but sometimes simple ideas can
save you money and improve your health, all at the same time.

Next month we'll continue with more about chronic fatigue..

Live in Passion and Good Health,
James Groves

                Dr. Earl Mindell's Wellness Update
                ==================================

Migraines appear to be caused by the contraction of tiny muscles
in the head and face and by abnormal nerve signals along the
trigeminal nerve, which runs from the brain to the meninges, the
membrane that surrounds the brain and spinal cord. Among the
factors that contribute to migraines are low blood sugar, stress,
constipation, flashing lights, allergies, and fluctuations in the
level of the hormone estrogen (which may explain why many more
women than men get these headaches).

According to Jonathan Wright, M.D., of the Tahoma Clinic in Kent,
Washington, the mineral magnesium, in combination with vitamin
B6, tends to do most of the work of relieving migraine pain.
Patients at his clinic who receive these nutrients intravenously
generally experience rapid improvement. To get to the root of the
problem, Dr. Wright also recommends testing and treatment for
food and hormone allergies and sensitivities, which he finds can
often trigger migraines. He also suggests testing for
hypoglycemia (low-blood sugar) and, if appropriate, a
low-carbohydrate diet.

In addition, a recent double blind, randomized, placebo-
controlled study reveals that vitamin B2 (riboflavin) has an
important role to play in migraine treatment. After three months,
sufferers who took 400 mg daily cut the number and severity of
their migraines by 50 percent!

Dr. Wright's migraine regimen includes the following (all
supplements should be hypoallergenic):

 - Magnesium citrate: 200 mg twice daily
 - Vitamin B2 (riboflavin): 200 mg twice daily
 - Vitamin B6: 200 mg twice daily
 - Vitamin B complex: 50 mg twice daily
 - Feverfew capsules: three twice daily

In addition to the above supplements, be sure to include a
high-quality multivitamin/mineral formula to ensure the best
nutritional support.

                           Eye Secrets
                       By T.Z. Movsas, M.D.

Eye Secret #1:

MONEY-SAVING EYEGLASSES SECRET: ORDER POLYCARBONATE LENSES

Very rarely does the optical store ask your input as to the type
of lenses you would like for your eyeglass frames.  On the other
hand, almost always you are asked if you would like to PAY EXTRA
for ultraviolet protection and scratch resistance.  Next time you
buy glasses, make sure you ask for polycarbonate lenses.

Polycarbonate lenses are very impact resistant, thinner and
lighter than most other plastic eyeglass lenses and have
ultraviolet protection and scratch resistance built in.  In fact,
polycarbonate lenses are recommended for all children's eyewear
and safety eyewear.  If you order polycarbonate lenses for your
eyeglasses or your children's eyeglasses, do not pay extra for
scratch resistance and ultraviolet protection.  These extra
charges are just another way for optical stores to increase the
selling price.

Eye Secret #2:
NEW TREATMENT APPROVED FOR WET MACULAR DEGENERATION

The wet form of age-related macular degeneration involves the
growth of abnormal new blood vessels in the fine focus area of
the eye (the macula) which leak (hence the name "wet") and
usually leads to rapid, severe vision loss.  Until now, the main
treatment for the wet form of age-related macular degeneration
has been to aim a highly focused laser beam at the leaking blood
vessels to seal them off called laser photocoagulation.  However,
if the leaking blood vessels lie right under the fovea
("subfoveal"), the bull's eye of the macula, the laser treatment
is generally not applied. Why? If you need to hit the fovea with
the laser to treat the abnormal vessels, the patient will
experience an immediate loss of vision from the laser treatment
itself.

Within the last year, a new treatment has become approved for
treatment for wet "subfoveal" macular degeneration called
photodynamic therapy. The treatment works as follows: A special
drug (such as Visudyne) is given to a patient through a vein and
travels to the tissue in the eye with the abnormal blood vessels
(called the choroidal neovascular tissue). The drug is then
activated by a specific wavelength of light aimed specifically at
the abnormal tissue to cause destruction of the abnormal vessels
with little destruction of the overlying retina.

This therapy is new and currently works only in certain cases of
wet macular degeneration. Your retina specialist can determine if
you are eligible for this treatment by taking a specialized
photograph of your eye called a fluorescein angiogram and
analyzing the specific pattern of your macular degeneration.

Eye Secret #3:
GLAUCOMA MEDICINE: XALATAN MAY TURN BLUE EYES TO BROWN

Xalatan (Latanoprost) first received FDA approval in June 1996
for treatment of glaucoma and had the distinction of being one of
the first glaucoma medications to help drain the aqueous fluid
build-up which leads to increased eye pressure.  Now, just about
five years later, it is commonly being used as a first-line
therapy for glaucoma.  Xalatan has two very unique side effects:
darkening of the eye color and lengthening of the eye lashes.

Dr. Daniel Albert, M.D., Chairman of the Dept of Ophthalmology
at the University of Wisconsin, has studied the color changes
caused by Xalatan.  His studies have concluded that the color
change caused by Xalatan is benign. There is no evidence that the
melanocytes (cells with pigment) are dividing and therefore this
side effect of the medication is interesting but NOT dangerous.

Summer is here and the temperatures are starting to soar.  Make
sure you are drinking enough water to keep your body properly
hydrated.  Remember, a good rule of thumb is to take your body
weight, divide it by two, and that is how many ounces of wate r
you should be drinking every day.  Water can also help with
appetite suppression.  Make it a habit to drink two glasses of
water with each meal.  This gives you feeling of fullness and
will help you leave the table earlier and avoid those second he
lpings.
