________________________________________________________________How To Stay Lean And Healthy
By Eating More Fruits And Vegetables
by Dr. Robert OsgoodbyThe United States has the highest level of obesity of any country
in the world. American's dietary habits and choices are the main
reason for this problem. In countries where fruits and
vegetables are the main staple of their diet, there are much
lower instances of obesity, heart disease and certain forms of
cancer. There are a lot of great reasons to eat more fruit and
vegetables. Fruit and vegetables are low in calories and low in
fat. They are high in fiber, vitamins and minerals. Research
studies have shown that people who eat at least 5 servings of
fruit and vegetables a day have a much lower risk for heart
disease and some cancers. The vitamins, minerals and other
components of fruits and vegetables are responsible for helping
prevent these common deadly diseases. Fruits and vegetables are
nutrient-dense, vitamin-rich and are high in Vitamin A, B, C and
fiberWith today's hectic, fast-paced world, they are perfect for
someone who is on the run and strapped for time. Other than
washing them and throwing them in tupperware or a plastic bag,
there is little to no preparation time. Vegetables and fruits
are the perfect fast and easy food.Keep fruit in sight in your refrigerator. By keeping fruit and
vegetables on your top shelf, rather than tucked away out of
sight in a bottom drawer, it reminds you to eat healthy every
time you open the refrigerator door. Another great way to keep
these healthy food items in sight is to keep a bowl of fruit on
your counter.Top your cereal, waffles, or pancakes with fruit. Fruit is the
perfect natural sweetener and a great addition to most breakfast
meals.Fruit is the perfect quick, easy snack. Instead of snacking on
cookies, pretzels or chips, grab a piece of fruit. It is a great
source of healthy carbohydrates that will provide you with the
energy you need to get through the day.Eat a garden salad for lunch. A salad is another healthy meal
that is easy to prepare. You can make a large salad in just a
few minutes time. This will keep you eating fresh healthy
vegetables for days. Bag it, put it in the refrigerator, and
it's ready when you are. You can also add protein to your salad
like tuna, chicken, turkey, beans, etc. . .Fruit is a quick, healthy, easy dessert. Instead of eating ice
cream, cake, or pie, have a piece of fruit instead. It's sweet,
delicious, and most important - a healthy end to your meal.-----

SmilesHouse Calls
-=-=-=-=-=-A doctor was awakened at four in the morning by a caller who
demanded to know how much he charged for a house call."Twenty-five dollars," muttered the sleepy physician.
"How much is an office visit?" demanded the caller.
"Fifteen dollars."
"Okay, Doc," said the caller. "I'll meet you in your office in
fifteen minutes."-----
My doctor tells me I suffer from extreme hypochondria.
He prescribed a strong placebo, but I don't think it's working.

Dear Dr. Osgoodby
I am looking to lose weight and increase my muscularity. When I
do a set, how many repetitions should I be doing?Sincerely,
Steve
-----
Dear Steve:
Great question! Although some experts may disagree, for
increasing muscle mass, I recommend that you do 12 repetitions
for each exercise. If you are looking just to tone, I recommend
16 repetitions for each exercise. If you are looking to become a
Power Lifter, you would be using heavier weights with fewer
repetitions. The amount of reps you do is not as important as your intensity.
It should be a challenge for you to get your last rep, and you
should go to muscle failure. This is one of the reasons it is a
good idea to have a work-out partner who can spot you. Once you
can comfortably do 12 repetitions, slightly increase your weight.Warmly,
Dr. Robert Osgoodby

Until recently, scientists subscribed to the wrong belief that
ulcers were caused by an excess production of acid in the
stomach. Ulcers are caused by acid-resistant bacteria and can be
cured by medication._________________________________________________________________
********How do I Get There From Here?********
by James Groves
The Good, The Bad, and The OilyAre you confused when you go to the store to purchase an oil for
cooking? I can certainly understand the confusion. Let's see,
there's vegetable oil, corn oil, olive oil, sunflower oil,
safflower oil, peanut oil, cornola (whatever that is) and for you
southerners, there's always lard. This last one I just named is
not a misprint. Lard is a white, thick, cooking substance that's
been around for a long time. I can remember my Grandmother used
this toothpaste, looking glob of white to fry chicken. So how do you begin to select an oil. First DO NOT ever use
vegetable oil. Remember a previous health tip was about butter
versus margarine (which is pure vegetable oil). If you missed
that article be sure to check Bob's website for the issue.Second, DO NOT use the lard I just mentioned above. If it
becomes solid and stays solid at room temperature, then imagine
what it does in your arteries. Clog-city!!Your best choice is always olive oil because it tastes good and
it's beneficial for your health. Extra-virgin olive oil is great
on salads or pasta, but it's also great for cooking. The extra-
virgin is usually a little more expensive, but that's because
it's the first gentle pressing of the olive and it is less
tampered with than other kinds. So now is the time to go to the pantry and throw out all those
saturated fats and even those polyunsaturated ones like corn oil,
safflower oil, and soybean oil. Purchase a good quality olive
oil.Your arteries and your heart will be glad you did!
These health tips can only be found in Dr. Osgoodby's Body
Transformation Newsletter.Join me next month and I'll talk about sugar substitutes.

==================================You've no doubt heard about beta-carotene, a potent antioxidant
that occurs naturally in many fruits and vegetables and is
converted to vitamin A in the body. Beta-carotene made headlines
in the 1980s when research revealed that it helps prevent certain
kinds of cancer. But this essential nutrient is just one of more
than 50 caretonoids, naturally occurring compounds that protect
the body against the ravages of ultraviolet radiation and other
potential carcinogens. Several new studies focus on the health
benefits of two other caretonoids, lutein, and zeaxanthin, which
are found in abundance in green vegetables like broccoli,
spinach, kale, and mustard greens.Apparently, these nutrients form the yellowish macular pigment
that is found in the center of the human retina. Previous studies
have shown that a diet rich in lutein and zeaxanthin reduces the
risk of age-related cataracts and helps prevent macular
degeneration, the leading cause of severe vision loss in people
over 55. The two caretonoids seem to work together to protect the
cells in the eyes from free-radical damage.A new study in the "Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics"
suggests that lutein and zeaxanthin may also reduce the effect of
ultraviolet light on the formation of disease-causing free
radicals and improve vision by reducing light scattering in the
retina. Since the body can't synthesize these nutrients itself
but must obtain them from external sources, the only way to
protect your vision is to eat your leafy greens and/or take
supplements that contain mixed caretonoids.Another study reveals that lutein and zeaxanthin may have cancer-
fighting properties as well. The report, which appeared in the
journal "Cancer Causes Control," analyzed the dietary habits of
women in Wisconsin and Massachusetts and found that those who
consumed the largest quantities of these nutrients had a 40
percent lower risk of ovarian cancer than women who consumed the
least. Just as the caretonoid lycopene seems to guard against
prostate cancer, lutein and zeaxanthin may have a particular
affinity for the ovaries.Whether you want to maintain keen eyesight or protect your
precious internal organs against cancer, a daily dose of mixed
caretonoids makes perfect health sense! In addition to eating
plenty of leafy greens, look for a supplement that contains a
blend of different caretonoids, including lutein and zeaxanthin.-----
