How To Prevent Type 2 Diabetes
by Dr. Robert Osgoodby

A healthy diet and regular exercise program not only will improve your appearance, but it also can improve your health and decrease your risk of developing certain diseases.  Recent studies by Harvard researchers have concluded that moderate exercise and a healthy diet can prevent most cases of type 2 diabetes - the most common form of diabetes.  The study overwhelmingly indicated that by making the appropriate lifestyle changes, diabetes can be prevented over 90% of the time.  The study also concluded that lifestyle changes significantly reduced the risk of getting the disease by 58% among people who already showed signs of developing diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes accounts for over 90% of all diabetes cases.  It occurs when your body can not properly utilize insulin in getting nutrients to your cells.  This results in high levels of sugar in your blood.  The number of cases of diabetes has been growing rapidly.  Studies indicate that over 16 million Americans have some form of diabetes!  Type 2 diabetes used to be considered a disease of the old, but not anymore.  It is becoming much more prevalent in younger people and has recently been showing an alarming increase among young people.

Diabetes is a disease where your underlying genetic background is critical.  If you have these genes and are at risk of developing diabetes, your lifestyle decisions very well may determine whether these genes become active or remain dormant.

What is most interesting is that Harvard researchers determined that 91% of cases among the people they studied could have been prevented by watching their weight, eating a healthy diet, moderate exercise, and not drinking and smoking.  Being overweight is the number one reason people contract diabetes - 61% of all cases are attributed to obesity and weight problems.

Some other interesting facts: Overweight women cut their risk by 24% simply by walking regularly.  There is a direct correlation between the amount of exercise and instances of diabetes.  The more exercise, the less instances.  Those who did 7 or more hours a week of exercise had a 29% lower risk than those who did not exercise or exercised less than 30 minutes per week.  Eating a diet that is high in fiber, low in fat and low in partially hydrogenated oils (french fries, commercial baked goods) also significantly decreases your risk.  If you already do not do so, become a label reader!

Pepper may not just be for seasoning.  Capsaicin is a protein compound found in pepper and peppers significantly lowers blood sugar levels and increases insulin levels.  Researchers have not concluded if the pepper compound acts by increasing the release of insulin, or by slowing it's breakdown.  Large doses of aspirin also lower your blood sugar and is an effective treatment of diabetes, but researchers warn that that the large doses required have detrimental side effects (intestinal bleeding, dizziness, nausea) that outweigh the benefits.

There are many diseases and illnesses you have no control over, but type 2 diabetes is highly preventable by watching your weight, exercising, eating a healthy diet, and not smoking or drinking.

                               Smiles

A young doctor had just opened office and felt really
excited. His secretary told him a man was here to see him.
The young doctor told her to send him in.

Pretending to be a busy doctor, he picked up the phone just
as the man came in. "Yes, that's right. The fee is $200. Yes,
I'll expect you ten past two. Alright. No later. I'm a very
busy man."

He hung up and turned to the man waiting. "May I help you?"

"No," said the man, "I just came in to install the phone."

Dear Dr. Osgoodby:

I read a lot about health, diet, exercise and fitness.  Over the last several months, I have seen Lycopine mentioned several times when the author has been talking about healthy foods.  What is it?  What benefits does it offer and in what foods can it be found?

Toni Chechela

Dear Toni:

Thanks for the email and question.  Lycopine is an anti-oxidant found in tomatoes.  It is actually what makes the tomatoes red.  The more Lycopene, the redder the tomato.  Lycopene is one of the strongest anti-oxidants available, even stronger than beta-carotene.  Processed tomatoes (sauce, ketchup, tomato juice) or cooked tomatoes actually have up to 8 times more lycopine than raw tomatoes.  Lycopine is also fat soluble which means you will absorb more lycopine if you eat it with a fat.  (cheese, butter, dairy, etc. .)

Lycopine and all anti-oxidants provide your body with several benefits.  It helps prevent some cancers including breast, lung, bladder, skin, digestive tract, prostate and cervix cancer.  It also helps prevent certain forms of heart disease including coronary heart disease.

Thanks again!

Warmly,

Dr. Robert Osgoodby

 Sugar or Sugar Substitutes

This month's health tip is in response to a subscriber's
questions about sugar substitutes.  But before I begin,
I'd like to thank Cindy for bringing up this issue and her
honest concern for good health. She wrote and asked me
if there were any benefits to using regular sugar over any
possible side effects to using sugar substitutes.

I was trying to think back to a time when I did use and enjoy
sugar.  One fond memory I have is of my Grandmother
melting brown sugar in butter and then pouring it over a
plain cake.  But the buzz word here is "brown sugar."  She
used a natural, unbleached sugar.  If you enjoy the taste of
sugar, try to find something like this, that's natural and then
only use a small amount.

Sugar substitutes are just what the name implies, substitutes,
something artificial or chemically produced.  One such example
that is used extensively is aspartame.  It has several very real,
and very risky side effects.  It can cause seizures in people with
phenylketonuria, a metabolic disorder that makes it difficult to break
down phenylalanine, an amino acid found in aspartame.  And
there have been reports of aspartame's connection to headaches,
and in severe cases it has caused other allergy like symptoms.

Here are my suggestions for those of you who enjoy the sweet taste
of sugar.  Eat lots of fruit.  Most of them are naturally sweetened
with fructose.  And unless you are specifically allergic to certain
fruits, these "sugars" won't cause you any problems.  Try using
honey instead of sugar.  If you really insist on using sugar, use less
of it.  Try to find natural sugars, ones that aren't refined or bleached.

Join me next month and we'll talk about ways to get a good night's
sleep. These health tips can only be found in Dr.
Osgoodby's Body Transformations Newsletter.

James Groves

                ==================================

In the world of scientific research, several different types of experiments
can be done to test a therapy's effectiveness at preventing or curing
disease. One type of study--the meta-analysis--looks at many studies on the same subject, analyzing the data collectively. This approach allows us to see the trend of the research that's been done so far, and to get moving on studies that promise to fill in gaps in our knowledge.

At the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, nutrition researchers set out to create a meta-analysis of studies on garlic and cancer. They found 22 well-executed studies on human subjects from countries as diverse as
Argentina, the Netherlands, China, and Switzerland, and the data showed that a diet rich in garlic cuts stomach cancer risk in half and colon cancer risk by one-third. Garlic kills the bacterium H. pylori, which has been implicated in stomach ulcers and stomach cancer. Both cooked and raw garlic were found to be protective.
