by Dr. Robert OsgoodbyI recently read in the New York Times that you are 71,500 times
more likely to die in a car accident this year than to be killed
by anthrax. Your risk of dying in a motor vehicle accident are 1
in 7,000, your risk of dying from anthrax is 1 in 500 m illion!
What was most alarming in the article is that your risk of dying
of heart disease is 1 in 400, and cancer 1 in 600! The major
killers are not accidents, but disease. The most deadly
illnesses are heart disease, cancer, stroke, flu and pneu monia.
Some people are genetically predetermined to be afflicted with
heart disease and cancer, but a significant percentage of cases
are preventable by following the proper diet, exercising, and
avoiding cigarettes, alcohol, and drugs. The followi ng
statistics in the article are based on deaths in the USA - I
think you may find them interesting:Heart Disease 1 in 400
Cancer 1 in 600
Stroke 1 in 2,000
Flu & Pneumonia 1 in 3,000
Motor vehicle accidents 1 in 7,000
Being shot by a gun 1 in 10,000

Anthrax 1 in 500 millionWith increasing instances of bio-terrorism, I am sure the anthrax
statistics will slightly increase this year. Unfortunately, the
average American can do nothing to stop bio-terrorism. It is out
of our control. One thing we can do to dramatically better our
survival odds is to address the four major killers that we do
have some control over - heart disease, cancer, stroke, flu and
pneumonia. The prescription is simple, you already know it:Eat a healthy low fat diet including a lot of fruits, vegetables,
and whole grains. Minimize your intake of dairy.Avoid partially hydrogenated oil like the plaque.
Exercise regularly.
Drink 80-100 oz. of H2O everyday.
If you chose to drink alcohol, make sure it is in moderation.
If needed, lose weight. Obesity is the second leading cause of
preventable death.If you smoke - quit! This is the first leading cause of

about 15 minutes with one of the new doctors, she went screaming
down the hall. Another doctor stopped and asked her what the
problem was and she explained.The second doctor went back to the first and said, "What's is the
matter with you? Mrs. Terry is 63 years old. She has four grown
children and seven grandchildren and you told her she was
pregnant?"The new doctor simply smiled and said, "Cured her hiccups though,

Dear Bill:
Thanks for the email and question. Anthrax is an infectious
disease caused by the spore-forming bacterium Bacillus Anthracis.
Anthrax most commonly occurs in wild and domestic animals
including sheep, cattle, goats, camels, antelopes and other
herbivores, but it can also occur in humans if they are exposed
to spores, infected animals, or tissue of infected animals.Anthrax can be found globally. It is more common in developing
countries without adequate public health programs. South and
Central America, Southern and Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, the
Caribbean, and the Middle East report the highest number of

are sure you must have asked yourself. Rest assured there is a
very good reason. Expecting women need to produce about 40-50%
more blood to take care of the foetus and salt is an essential
ingredient to make this extra supply of blood. Further, the

Avocados Can Lower Your CholesterolAre you're one of those people who enjoy eating avocados? If you
are, then you could be lowering your cholesterol every time you
eat one. A recent study from Australia showed that people who ate
1 1/2 avocados per day lowered their cholesterol levels from an
average of 236 to 217.Now here's the twist to this study. Before going on the avocado
diet, these people spent three weeks on a low-fat diet. The
result was an average decrease in cholesterol levels of only 4.9
percent compared to 8.2 percent on the avocado diet.Here's another avocado fact you're going to love. The avocados
preserved the levels of HDL (the good cholesterol), but on the
low-fat diet these good HDL's went down 14%.The answer is one word: monounsaturates, the main fat found in
avocados and the same one that we all recognize as being healthy
that is found in olive oil. So eat up, enjoy avocados, and stop
