High Protein Diets Can Increase The Risk
                    Of Certain Health Problems
                      by Dr. Robert Osgoodby

I recently read in the Washington Post, that the American Heart
Association has issued a strong recommendation against following
high-protein weight loss programs such as the "Atkins Diet,
Protein Power, the Zone and Sugar Busters".  The AHA sites a lack
of credible scientific evidence of long-term weight loss using
these programs and increased risk for those with diabetes and
heart disease.

High protein diets are enjoying a wave of popularity.  Dr. Robert
C. Atkins, author of "Dr. Atkins' new Diet Revolution" and many
other books claims a following of over 20 million people
worldwide.  Dr. Atkins' and some similar diets severely restrict
carbohydrate intake and permit foods often discouraged in other
diets, including milk, cheese, butter and oil.  Atkin's diet and
Protein Power have a particularly high intake of total fat,
saturated fat and cholesterol - all of which raise your risk of
heart disease.  Using their recommended di0et plans, you can
actually get up to 60% of your daily calories from fat!

Rapid weight loss often produced by high protein diets is due
mostly to a temporary loss of fluids caused by eating fewer
carbohydrates.  When diets that restrict carbohydrates are
successful, it is largely because they also result in calorie
restriction, not because eating dietary protein instead of
carbohydrates is beneficial for weight loss.  Most of these diets
limit the consumption of foods such as breads, pasta, cereal and
starchy vegetables.  High protein diets are based on the theory
that carbohydrates spike insulin levels in the blood and are
responsible for weight gain and deposits of fat.

High protein weight loss programs are especially risky for people
with diabetes because they can speed the progression of kidney
disease, even if the diet is followed for a short period of time.
Other possible health risks of high protein diets include gout,
osteoporosis, and increased risk of cancer.

More than half of U.S. adults are either overweight or obese and
the majority are on some kind of weight reduction plan.  Both the
U.S. Dietary Guidelines and the AHA's guidelines both recommend a
diet low in fat, high in fruit, vegetables, whole grains, and not
to consume more calories than necessary to maintain a healthy
body weight.

In fairness to Dr. Atkins, a spokesperson for the Atkins Health
and Medical Information Service in New York said, "The AHA is
using scare tactics as headlines and feeding facts that are not
supported by scientific evidence.  Many people can't, won't, and
don't follow low-fat recommendations.  Now people won't have a
safe and effective alternative to address their obesity problem."

Help My Wife
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
A wild-eyed man dressed in a Napoleonic costume and hiding his
right hand inside his coat entered the psychiatrist's office and
nervously exclaimed, "Doctor, I need your help right away."

"I can see that," retorted the doctor. "Lie down on that couch
and tell me your problem."

"I don't have any problem," the man snapped. "In fact, as Emperor
of France I have everything I could possibly want: money, women,
power -- everything! But I'm afraid my wife, Josephine, is in
deep mental trouble."

"I see," said the psychiatrist, humoring his distraught patient.
"And what seems to be her main problem?"

"For some strange reason," answered the unhappy man, "she thinks
she's Mrs. Schwartz."

Dear Dr. Osgoodby:

My problem areas are my thighs and rear end.  What exercises do
you recommend to specifically target those areas?

Sincerely,
Cecilia

-----

Dear Cecilia:

Thanks for the email.  I recommend the following exercises to
tone your legs and rear end: Squats, Leg Press, Lunges, Hip
Abduction, Hip Adduction, Leg Extensions, Leg Curls, and Calf
Raises.  These exercises should be done twice a week, give your
muscle groups at least 72 hours of rest before training them
again.  Remember, weight training is a primary piece to the
puzzle to improve your problem areas - but the proper diet and
cardiovascular exercise program are just as important.

Warmly

Dr. Robert Osgoodby

Facial dimples are the result of abnormal bonding of skin tissue
with the bone beneath. Flaws can be beautiful too, you know.

The Good, The Bad, and The Oily

This is the sixth health tip in a series about simple, easy to
follow steps to improving health. Take each small step I give
you and turn it into a habit, just like combing your hair or
brushing your teeth.

Are you confused when you go to the store to purchase an oil for
cooking?  I can certainly understand the confusion.  Let's see,
there's vegetable oil, corn oil, olive oil, sunflower oil,
safflower oil, peanut oil, cornola (whatever that is) and for you
southerners, there's always lard.  This last one I just named is
not a misprint.  Lard is a white, thick, cooking substance that's
been around for a long time.  I can remember my Grandmother used
this toothpaste, looking glob of white to fry chicken.

So how do you begin to select an oil.  First DO NOT ever use
vegetable oil.  Remember last week's health tip was about butter
versus margarine (which is pure vegetable oil).  If you missed
that article be sure to write Bob and ask for the issue.

Second, DO NOT use the lard I just mentioned above.  If it
becomes solid and stays solid at room temperature, then imagine
what it does in your arteries.  Clog-city!!

Your best choice is always olive oil because it tastes good and
it's beneficial for your health.  Extra-virgin olive oil is great
on salads or pasta, but it's also great for cooking.  The extra-
virgin is usually a little more expensive, but that's because
it's the first gentle pressing of the olive and it is less
tampered with than other kinds.

So now is the time to go to the pantry and throw out all those
saturated fats and even those polyunsaturated ones like corn oil,
safflower oil, and soybean oil.  Purchase a good quality olive
oil.  Your arteries and your heart will be glad you did!

These health tips can only be found in Dr. Osgoodby's Body
Transformations Newsletter.  Until next month,

Live in Passion and Good Health,
James Groves

                Dr. Earl Mindell's Wellness Update
                ==================================

Among American men, bladder cancer is the fourth leading type of
cancer, and causes nearly 12,000 deaths every year. A study in
the May 1999 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine reveals
what I had already suspected: that drinking plenty of water
reduces the risk of bladder cancer. Men who drank more than ten
eight-ounce cups of fluid per day had a 49 percent lower risk
of bladder cancer than men who drank less than five cups a day.

Why the discrepancy in cancer rates? Urinating less means that
urine sits in the bladder for extended periods. My best guess is
that the faster fluid passes out of the bladder, the less time
carcinogens have to do their dirty work on the organ. Any
carcinogenic wastes in the urine would be diluted by a high fluid
intake, as well. Go ahead and get that glass of clean, pure,
filtered water...we'll wait!

Stay Healthy,
Dr. Earl Mindell

You can lose weight on a high protein diet, but there are health
risks including heart disease involved.  High protein diets are
especially risky for people with diabetes or kidney disease, and
can also increase your risk of osteoporosis, gout and ca ncer.
