Cosmetic Surgery Is Becoming Increasingly Popular,
                        But Risks Do Exist
                      by Dr. Robert Osgoodby

You have religiously stuck to your diet and exercise program,
decreased your body fat percentage, and reached your goal weight,
but - you still have that extra skin or those ugly stretch
marks.  You look great in clothes, but not so great without them.
Cosmetic surgery is a solution, but surgical risks still exist.

Improved surgical techniques have made liposuction, tummy tucks,
breast surgery (for women and men) and face lifts much safer.  In
most cases, I am not an advocate of unnecessary surgery because
of the complications that can occur ranging from adverse
reactions to anesthesia, infection, and botched procedures that
can result in permanent disfigurement and nerve damage.  If you
do choose cosmetic surgery, you can minimize your risks by taking
these basic precautions:

1. Insist On A Top-Notch Surgeon - Looking in the phone book is
not the solution.  Most doctors with a medical degree can legally
perform plastic surgery; no special training or certification is
necessary.  Choose a surgeon who is a member of The American
Society For Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, http://www.surgery.org
(888-272-7711)  Members are certified by the American Board Of
Plastic Surgery and have demonstrated their expertise in cosmetic
procedures.

2. Thoroughly Research The Procedure You Desire - When you arrive
for your initial consultation, you should be knowledgeable about
the procedure you are interested in.  You can research any
procedure on the internet, in books, medical journals and
magazines.  Ask questions.  Some examples would be: What
surgical procedure would you recommend?  Why?  May I see before
and after photos of your work?  How are emergencies handled if
they occur?

3. Get A Second And Third Opinion - Even if you are extremely
happy with the first surgeon you visit with, get several
opinions.

4. Ask Your Doctor About Anesthesia Options - Cosmetic surgery
can be done under general anesthesia, regional anesthesia, or
local anesthesia.  If you have a certain preference for a certain
anesthesia, do not insist that a doctor use a form of anesthesia
that his team has little experience with.  If you are determined
to have a certain form of anesthesia that your doctor is not
comfortable with, choose another surgeon.  Make sure your
anesthesiologist is board certified.  You can find out by
contacting the American Board Of Medical Specialties at
http://www.abms.org or at (866) 275-2267.

5. Reconsider Cosmetic Surgery If You Smoke, Have Vascular
Disease Or Diabetes - Most plastic surgery procedures including
face lifts and tummy tucks, require that the tissue and skin
survive temporarily on a limited blood supply.  There is a much
higher risk of complications in people who have medical
conditions or bad habits that decrease circulation.

6. If It Sounds To Good To Be True, It Probably Is - Beware of
outrageous claims.  A face-lift can make you look younger, but it
won't stop "Father Time."  Liposuction can improve your
appearance, but can't cure obesity or prevent future weight gain.

Before undergoing plastic surgery, make sure you understand what
realistically can be accomplished, and what can not.

Diet Troubles
-=-=-=-=-=-=-

A woman in our diet club was lamenting that she had gained
weight. She'd made her family's favorite cake over the weekend,
she reported, and they'd eaten half of it at dinner.

The next day, she said, she kept staring at the other half, until
finally she cut a thin slice for herself. One slice led to
another, and soon the whole cake was gone. The woman went on to
tell us how upset she was with her lack of willpower, and how she
knew her husband would be disappointed.

Everyone commiserated, until someone asked what her husband said
when he found out.

She smiled. "He never found out. I made another cake and ate
half!"

-----

When a co-worker received a phone call from her daughter, we
heard her exclaim joyfully, "Seven and a half pounds! I'm so
proud!" After she had hung up, I asked, "Boy or girl?" "Neither,"
my colleague replied.

"Diet."

Each edition includes a response to a question received from
our subscribers.  We answer all questions, however those that we
think will be of interest to a number of people, we will feature
here.

Dear Dr. Osgoodby,

I have a lot of skin on my stomach (from my pregnancy). Is there
anyway to tighten the skin around my stomach - or is  this
something that only plastic surgery can solve?

Thanks,
Sarah

-----

Dear Sarah:

Unfortunately, child bearing reeks havoc on the skin in the
abdominal area.  Decreasing your body fat percentage should
improve the situation, but if you want a perfect flat stomach
with no extra skin or stretch marks, plastic surgery is your only
solution.

I am not a huge fan of unnecessary cosmetic surgery because of
the risks that exist.  I think you will enjoy this months
newsletter - the subject is cosmetic surgery.  It should answer
all of your questions and also provide you with valuable
information if you do choose to undergo plastic surgery.

Warmly,
Dr. Robert Osgoodby

The sound heard by a listener when holding a seashell to his ear
does NOT come from the shell itself. It is the echo of the blood
pulsing in the listener's own ear.

Avocados Can Lower Your Cholesterol

Are you're one of those people who enjoy eating avocados?  If you
are, then you could be lowering your cholesterol every time you
eat one. A recent study from Australia showed that people who ate
1 1/2 avocados per day lowered their cholesterol levels from an
average of 236 to 217.

Now here's the twist to this study. Before going on the avocado
diet, these people spent three weeks on a low-fat diet. The
result was an average decrease in cholesterol levels of only 4.9
percent compared to 8.2 percent on the avocado diet.

Here's another avocado fact you're going to love. The avocados
preserved the levels of HDL (the good cholesterol), but on the
low-fat diet these good HDL's went down 14%.

The answer is one word: monounsaturates, the main fat found in
avocados and the same one that we all recognize as being healthy
that is found in olive oil. So eat up, enjoy avocados, and stop
worrying about the fat!

These health tips can only be found in Dr. Osgoodby's
Newsletter.  Live in Passion and Good Health,

James Groves

                ==================================

Calcium Supplements Could Help You Lose Weight

Researchers at the University of Vermont have made an interesting
discovery about calcium. This bone-building, PMS-relieving
nutrient also seems to help women release excess pounds. Women
who increased calcium intake as little as 130 mg a day showed an
increased rate of weight loss compared to women whose calcium
intake didn't increase. One of the study's authors, Jean Harvey-
Burino, PhD, advises that the use of at least 1,000 mg of
supplemental calcium per day is a good way to enhance weight
loss.

In-depth studies of fat cell function have shown that when
calcium intake is too low, a hormone that causes bones to
demineralize is released. This same hormone affects fat cells,
too, by prompting them to store more fat. Other research has
shown that the amount of calcium stored in fat cells plays an
important role in regulating how much fat they store or burn. In
one study, mice that were bred to be obese by being plumped up on
a high-fat, high-sugar diet, were put on a calorie-restricted
diet and some increased calcium intake with supplements or
low-fat dried milk. The mice that received calcium supplements
lost 42 percent of their fat weight, while the ones that were not
given extra calcium only lost 8 percent!

Getting at least 1000 mg of calcium in your diet every day is
another way of winning the battle of the bulge!

Stay Healthy,
Dr. Earl Mindell

If you choose plastic surgery, don't get ambushed by hidden
costs.  Ask before-hand what your total costs will be, including
surgery, anesthesia and facility fees.  Also ask if there are
extra fees if revisions need to be made.  If you do choose
plastic surgery, make sure you do the necessary research before
making your final decision and properly weigh the risks against
the possible results.
