Food For Thought
by Dr. Robert OsgoodbyA recent study revealed that Americans are eating 50% more junk
food than they were 20 years ago. In fact, across all age
groups, the consumption of snacks, soda and junk food is making
our nation fatter and unhealthier than ever. Among people under
40 years of age, pizza and snack consumption has risen by up to
143% over the last 20 years! The most popular junk food items
are desserts, salty snacks, candy, French fries, pizza,
hamburgers, hot dogs and high fat dairy products. The conclusion of the study is startling. In 1981, the average
person obtained 11.3% of their caloric intake from snacks. In
2001, the proportion rose to 17.7% and the numbers are not
getting better. America is experiencing an obesity epidemic, not
only adults, but children as well. When compared to healthy meals and snacks, junk food provides
children with less calcium, and less vitamins and minerals which
are essential for health and development. There is a solution.
Whenever possible, replace junk foods that are high in fat, salt
and sugar with healthy foods like fruits and vegetables.Rapid increases over the last three decades in obesity has
plagued Americans with a myriad of health problems including
diabetes, cardiovascular problems, strokes and heart attacks. A
poor diet including increased snack and junk food consumption is
the main culprit. The following are statistics comparing snack consumption in 1981
vs. 2001. Today, in one year the average American consumes:45 large bags of potato chips - up 78%
120 orders of french fries - up 130%
310 cans of soda - up 55%
190 candy bars - up 80%
120 pastries or desserts - up 95%
150 slices of pizza - up 143%
In today's fast paced world, many people make food choices that
are fast and convenient, rather than healthy. Again, the
solution to this problem is simple. Cut down on the junk food.
Instead of grabbing that bag of chips or order of fries, replace
it with a piece of fruit, serving of vegetables, or a garden
salad.-----

Smiles
Doctor's Orders
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=A 93 year old man went to his doctor to get a physical.
A week later, the doctor saw the man walking down the street with
an attractive young woman on his arm.At the man's next visit, the doctor said, "I saw you with a lady
the other day. You're really doing great, aren't you?"The man replied, "Just doing what you said Doctor:
"Get a hot mamma and be cheerful'."The Doctor said, "I didn't say that. I said you got a heart
murmur. Be careful."-----
I went on a diet, swore off drinking and heavy eating, and in
fourteen days, I lost two weeks._________________________________________________________________

Each edition includes a response to a question received from
our subscribers. We answer all questions, however those that we
think will be of interest to a number of people, we will feature
here.-----
Dear Dr. Osgoodby,
My stomach is my main problem area. I would rather work out at
home than in a gym. Can you recommend an inexpensive piece of
equipment I can purchase to train my abdominal area? Thanks,
Andy Bledsoe-----
Dear Andy:
Thanks for the email. My preference is the AbRoller. The
AbRoller can be purchased at most sporting goods stores for under
$100.00. It also comes with an instructional video tape that
shows you the proper form for forward crunches, leg lifts, and
side crunches. If you have a VCR, most body sculpting video
tapes also include an abdominal program. These tapes usually
cost anywhere between $10.00 and $20.00.Warmly,
Dr. Robert Osgoodby_________________________________________________________________
Trivia
Historical records indicate that the earliest known advocate of a
fiber diet was Hippocrates. He urged his fellow countrymen to
bake their bread with bran for its "salutary effect on the
bowels."_________________________________________________________________

The Poor Man's Meat Can Lower Your Cholesterol"Here's another tip you can use to lower your cholesterol. You've
learned about avocados and almonds, now you can eat the "Poor
Man's Meat" and lower your cholesterol in just three weeks.Eat lots of beans, lentils, and peas. These foods are rich in
protein and complex carbohydrates. They are also low in fat,
sodium and they have no cholesterol. If you don't want to spend endless hours, soaking and cooking
beans, then use split peas or lentils. They don't need to be
soaked and they cook in a fraction of the time that other dried
beans demand.Split peas can be used for more than just soup. They make a great
no-guilt dip. Cook yellow split peas until well done, then place
them in a bowl overnight. Spoon this mixture into a food
processor and add one teaspoon of olive oil, and one tablespoon
of lemon juice. Process until smooth, and creamy. Place in a
bowl and add 1/2 cup of diced onions and one more teaspoon of
olive oil. Your guests and family will love this dip served with
raw vegetables. These health tips can only be found in Dr. Osgoodby's Newsletter.

==================================Make Mushrooms A Part Of Your Daily Diet
While shiitake, maitake, and reishi mushrooms are the most
thoroughly researched of the medicinal mushrooms, keep this in
mind: of the 2,000 edible mushrooms known to exist, about 300
have medicinal value. Chances are good that whatever mushrooms
you choose to eat, you'll be benefiting your health. If you aren't a mushroom fan, it's most likely because you
haven't tried all of the tasty varieties out there. Try them in
stir-fries, soups, sauces, and stews, or cook them and chop them
up to add to homemade veggie burgers. Many kinds of mushrooms-the
giant portabella and the lowly white button mushroom come to
mind-are delicious simply broiled, steamed, or grilled.
(Portabellas and other firm mushrooms make terrifically hearty
vegetarian shish kebabs.) If the notion of dining on fungus
simply does not appeal to you, try taking mushroom supplements. Some supplements are simply whole mushrooms ground into powder
and encapsulated, while others contain highly specific extracts
such as lentinan or D-fraction. Generally healthy people who
don't like to eat mushrooms will benefit from the whole mushroom
versions, but if you're fighting cancer, seek out alpha-D-glucan,
D-fraction, and lentinan supplements specifically, and use them
according to the instructions on the container. Even in enormous
doses, these substances pose no danger and have not been found to
cause any unpleasant side effects; of course, don't hesitate to
talk to your health care team about these supplements. For
chronic colds, flus, or other infections, consider using a whole
shiitake supplement to boost your body's ability to get well and
stay well.Stay Healthy,
Dr. Earl Mindell-----

It is unrealistic to completely abstain from French fries, soda,
potato chips, candy, cake, pie, and pizza. Unfortunately, these
types of foods are a staple for many American families -
McDonald's on Monday, pizza on Tuesday, Chinese food on Wednesd
ay, Burger King on Thursday, etc. . . Almost anything is fine in
moderation - but - if you are interested in improving your
health, eat less junk food and eat more fruits and vegetables.Yours in Health
