                      SOS!!  Save Our Skin!!
                      by Dr. Robert Osgoodby

Unfortunately, there is no such thing as a healthy tan.  Studies
have proven that over 90% of wrinkles, brown spots, and skin
cancer are caused by the sun.  Fair skin also wrinkles faster
than dark skin because of it's lack of pigment.  Everyone,
regardless of skin type needs to use sunscreen year-round to
protect against the suns damaging UVA and UVB rays.

What is the best way to decrease your chances of getting skin
cancer, brown spots and premature wrinkles?  The Vampire
Approach - stay out of the sun!  Buy a cape, leave your home
before sunrise, stay inside all day, keep the shades drawn, and
come h ome after sunset.  This approach will help you save your
skin, but it will put a huge damper on your social life.
Sunscreen and common sense is the practical answer to protect
your skin.

Sunscreen should be used anytime you are going to be in the sun
for more than 20 minutes.  If you are going to wear make-up,
apply sunscreen before you apply your make-up.  There are also
many cosmetic products available today that contain sunscreen
that help prevent premature aging and skin cancer.

Since sun exposure is responsible for vitamin D production, if
you wear sunscreen, take a multivitamin, or drink vitamin D
fortified milk.

Most people only use sunscreen on sunny summer days.  Remember,
the sun's reflective powers are great on sand, water, even snow!
Don't reserve the use of sunscreen for only summer days.  Even on
a cloudy day, 80% of the sun's ultraviolet rays pass through the
clouds.

Sunscreens should be applied 15-30 minutes before going outdoors.
Sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours or after swimming
or perspiring heavily.  Even though some sunscreens claim their
product is water resistant, some sun screens lose their
effectiveness after 80 minutes in the water.

Sunscreens are available in many forms - gels, lotions, creams,
wax sticks to name a few.  Ideally, sunscreens should be water
resistant so that they cannot be easily removed by sweating or
swimming and should have an SPF of 15 or higher.

Sunscreen is not the only thing you can use to protect yourself
from the sun.  Here are are some other things you can do to
prevent skin cancer and premature aging:

1. Wear protective clothing including sunglasses, a hat, long
   sleeved shirts and pants.
2. Seek shade when possible.
3. Avoid the peak hours.  The sun's rays are strongest between
   10:00AM and 4:00PM.

Sunburn is not only painful but dangerous as well.  First-degree
sunburn causes redness and possible peeling.  This is best
treated with cool baths, bland moisturizers, and hydrocortisone
creams.  Second and third degree sunburns should be considered an
emergency, especially if a large area is affected.  Skin blisters
are a common with second and third degree sunburn.  When a burn
is severe, and/or accompanied by a headache, chills or fever,
seek medical help immediately.

If your interested in protecting your skin, The American Academy
Of Dermatology has a great web site (www.aad.org) that offers
great ways on how to protect your skin from the sun and how to
avoid melanoma which is the deadliest form of skin cancer.

House Calls
-----------
A doctor was awakened at four in the morning by a caller who
demanded to know how much he charged for a house call.

"Twenty-five dollars," muttered the sleepy physician.

"How much is an office visit?" demanded the caller.

"Fifteen dollars."

"Okay, Doc," said the caller. "I'll meet you in your office in
fifteen minutes."

Dear Dr. Osgoodby:

I have had several knee surgeries on both legs, I was hit by a
car when I was nine years old.  Other than running, what forms of
cardiovascular exercise can you recommend that will not aggravate
my knees?

Thanks,
Joe Parino

Dear Joe:

Thanks for the email.  Sorry to hear about the bad knees.
Injuries definitely make getting in shape more challenging, but I
have some great options for you:

1. Swimming - swimming is a great no-impact exercise that works
more muscle groups than any other exercise.
2. Walking - walking at a slow/medium pace either on a treadmill
or outside on grass is low impact.
3. Low Impact Aerobic Video Tapes - Denise Austin has a great
tape titled "XtraLite Beginner's Aerobics" which I highly
   recommend.
4. Rowing Machine - a rowing machine is a great form of
cardiovascular exercise which only works your upper body.

If any exercise bothers your knees and causes pain, immediately
stop and eliminate it from your routine.

Warmly,
Dr. Robert Osgoodby

An Email From One Of Our Present Clients

Dr. Osgoodby:

Just thought I'd update you on my progress--good news is nice to
get!

Since February 1st, I have lost 35 lbs (beating my goal and time
to make the goal by 10 lbs and 4 weeks!)

My body has totally changed---to date I have lost 8 inches from
my waist and 9 inches from my hips.  I have put 4 inches on my
biceps, 3 inches on my forearms, 5 inches on my calves, and my
thighs are now the same size as they were when I was nearly 40
lbs heavier--but they are nearly all solid muscle.

I now have to have all my suits tailored---I wear a 42 inch
tailored jacket, and 32 (soon to be less!) inch pants!

Needless to say, I have very few clothes that fit---and am glad
of it.

Thanks for your program---it worked (and continues to work) for
me.  Oh--and the abs are almost out---another month or so!

Thanks again!

Steven Knowlton

                              Trivia

Roughly 25 percent of all prescription medicines in the United
States are derived from plants, including alkaloids from the rosy
periwinkle of Madagascar. This plant has been successful in
arresting childhood leukemia and Hodgkin's disease.

********How do I Get There From Here?********
                         by James Groves

Beginning this month, I'm going to make some simple suggestions
and offer alternative remedies for common health problems. Of
course, none of this is meant to replace visits to your doctor,
but these simple ideas could save you money and improve your
health, all at the same time.

If you have been experiencing angina, then your body is telling
you that it's time to change your diet and your lifestyle. Begin
with an increase in exercise, eliminate smoking, and adopt a
calmer, gentler outlook on life.

You should include vitamin C and lysine in your nutritional
supplement program. This combination is an excellent way of
reducing arterial plaque. Also, add Coenzyme Q10 to your
daily supplements. This amazing nutrient has shown an ability
to improve cardiovascular functioning and performance.
Eat fish at least twice per week or use fish-oil supplements.

Studies have shown that EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) can
reduce blood pressure and help increase circulation. The
end result could be a decrease in angina attacks.

Next month we'll continue with some simple suggestions for
those who suffer from chronic fatigue.

These health tips can only be found in Dr. Osgoodby's Newsletter.

Live in Passion and Good Health,
James Groves

                ==================================

The Healthy Cholesterol Lifestyle

A healthy lifestyle is the foundation for balanced cholesterol.
Start with a whole-foods, vegetable-rich diet high in fiber and
avoid processed or refined foods as much as possible. Vegetables
contain lots of antioxidant nutrients, which help prevent
oxidation of LDL in your blood vessels. Small servings (three
ounces, the size of a deck of cards) of fish, poultry, and even
red meat provide a good protein balance with vegetables and whole
grains. Eggs and tofu are good sources of protein and essential
fats. Fiber helps your body to eliminate excess cholesterol, so
add a source of supplemental fiber if you're not having regular,
easy bowel movements.

Stress is known to cause blood cholesterol to rise. Try to eat
according to these guidelines, but don't worry yourself sick over
whether you're eating right! Find constructive ways to manage
stress in general.

Get some mild to moderate exercise every day if you can. Take
your antioxidant supplements, especially vitamin E (which
prevents LDL oxidation), alpha-Lipoic acid (which supports the
action of vitamin E and other antioxidant vitamins), and
proanthocy anidins (PCOs for short, found in grape seed extract
and green tea). Be sure to get at least 50 mg of B6, 400 mcg of
folic acid, and 100 mcg of B12 daily to keep homocysteine levels
in check.

Regardless of your skin type, protect your skin with sunscreen
whenever you are going to be in the sun for more than 20 minutes.
Remember, it does not to have to be a hot sunny day for the sun
to damage your skin.  If you are going to be in the sun, apply
sunscreen at least 15 minutes before you go outside, and reapply
it every two hours.  Don't forget your sunglasses, hat, and other
protective clothing if you are going to be in the sun for a
prolonged period of time.
