Should I Work Out At Home Or In
A Gym?
by Dr. Robert Osgoodby
One of the most common questions I get from our subscribers is whether they should work out at a gym or health club, or train at home. Does it matter where you work out? Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. The most important thing is that you do work out and are consistent but there are reasons to choose a health club rather than home, and visa versa.
If you are seriously out of shape and self confident about your appearance, it is better to start training in the privacy of your own home. Once you start to lose weight and improve your appearance, your self-esteem will also improve. When you get to the point that you are more comfortable with your appearance, you can always chose to join a health club then.
If your goal is to gain weight or significantly increase your muscularity, there is no substitute for a gym. Health clubs and gyms have hundreds of thousands of dollars of state-of-art equipment that allow you to properly train even the toughest muscle groups. It is especially hard to get a good leg work out at home if you are interested in increasing your muscularity. Can it be done at home? Yes, but you would need pretty extensive equipment including a squat rack, leg press, leg extension and leg curl machines, a calf raise machine, and significant amount of free weight.
Are you easily distracted at home? Is the phone always ringing? Do you have small children that need constant attention? If you have answered yes to any of these questions, a health club is definitely for you. Constant distractions and interruptions make it impossible to focus and get a good work out.
Do you have an insane schedule, constantly pressed for time? Training at home may be the answer. You save some time by eliminating travel to and from the gym. You also have the option of training very early, or very late if necessary.
Do you just need to lose a little weight and tone up? You make the call. Training either at home or at a health club is fine to achieve this goal. Basic exercise equipment like a few dumbbells, a floor mat, bench and VCR is all you need if you plan on exercising at home.
One of the top five reasons people join a gym or health club is to socialize. If you want to get in shape and meet and interact with other people, there is no substitute for a health club unless you can convince the neighborhood to get in shape and come over and join you. Remember, your primary goal is to get in shape. Exercise your lips after you exercise your body.
Is money an issue? Joining a health club can be expensive. Believe it or not, all you need is a VCR and a few aerobic or toning tapes to get quick results. There are literally hundreds of tapes to chose from including Tae Bo, Buns Of Steel, Denise Austin, Kathy Smith, Cory Everson and Richard Simmons to name a few. Do you like to dance? There are many great tapes that not only will tone and reshape your body but teach you the latest dance steps. Some suggestions are MTV's "The Grind Work Out," Christy Lane's "Fun And Funky Freestyle Dancing," Paula Abduls "Get Up And Dance," and "Life Of The Party" which teaches you the Macarena, the Hustle, the Electric Slide, YMCA/Touch Step, the Train, the Jitterbug, the Twist, the Chicken Dance, the Electric Slide, and the Conga.
Unfortunately, most home exercise equipment is used to hang clothes and most gym memberships are paid for and never used. Before you part with your hard earned money, ask yourself one question, "Have I truly made the decision to get in shape and I am willing to dedicate the time to achieve and maintain my fitness goals?" If your answer is yes, improving your health and appearance is money well spent and a very wise investment.

Smiles
Losing a Foot
A woman was not feeling well,
so she visited her doctor.
The good doctor, after giving her
a thorough examination, said grimly,
"Mrs Goode, I am sorry to have to say this, but if you want to get well again you would have to lose a foot."
"What!?! You mean my foot has to be amputated?"
"Oh, no, no..." replied the good doctor, "I mean you have to lose a foot from around your waistline!"
Are you unhappy with the way you look? Would you like to loose weight? Are you interested in toning-up or increasing your muscularity? Would you like to improve your health and quality of life? Are you thin and like to gain weight? If you have answered "yes" to any of these questions, I am confident my personalized diet and exercise program will quickly get you to your goals. Your diet and exercise program is custom-tailored to your individual needs and situation plus I provide you with lifetime fitness consultation. I have helped thousands of people, all ages, shapes, and sizes improve their health and appearance. I am here to help you every step of the way. Please visit my web site at www.bestbodyever.com . Dear Dr. Osgoodby:
I exercise four times a week and watch my diet most of the time. Sometimes on the weekend I find myself cheating on my diet and basically eating and drinking anything I feel like. I always feel guilty the next day. What is your opinion on having an occasional cheat day?
Sincerely Yours,
Maria Martinez
-----
Dear Maria:
Thanks for the email. Having an occasional cheat day is fine, as long as it is occasional. Life is precious and meant to be enjoyed. Occasionally eating your favorite foods breaks up the monotony of dieting and actually makes it easier to stick to the program. Occasionally falling of the diet wagon is fine - just remember to jump back on the next day.
Warmly,
Dr. Robert Osgoodby

********How do I Get There From
Here?********
by James Groves
This month I'm going to continue with the subject of Chronic Fatigue. Last month I discussed prescription drugs, poor digestion and the American diet as primary causes of Chronic Fatigue. Here are three more to add to that checklist.
Stress can play an important role in Chronic Fatigue because of the resultant adrenal weakness. Practice some form of relaxation to lower your level of stress. Try taking a walk through a park, or visit a museum and leave your daily problems at home.
Another cause of Chronic Fatigue is functional hypothyroid. Here's how to check to see if you have this problem. Take your underarm temperature first thing in the morning for 5 days. If it averages less than 97.2 degrees, then functional hypothyroid could be the problem. Try these two tips before you rush to the doctor. First, get the chlorine out of your drinking water and use an iodine-rich supplement like kelp.
Allergies, especially those from food, can cause Chronic Fatigue. Many common foods, such as white flour, peanut butter, chocolate, and even sugar can cause problems. Eliminate these one at a time, see if you feel better, and then reintroduce them into your diet. Also you can check with your doctor and ask for an IgG4 blood test.
Next month we'll continue with more about chronic fatigue. These health tips can only be found in Dr.Osgoodby's Body Transformations Newsletter.

Dr. Earl Mindell's Wellness Update ==================================
Can you get the same benefit from taking fish oil supplements as actually eating fish?
Virtually every prestigious medical journal has published reports on the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids for treating chronic illness. Omega-3 fats are harder to obtain in the average American diet, and extensive research has shown that raising omega-3 levels in the body can be helpful for those with heart disease, allergies, eczema, asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, and irregular heartbeat.
I recommend that you eat oily fish (salmon, bluefish, swordfish, and mackerel) a minimum of twice a week, or if you don't like the taste of fish, you can reap the same benefits by taking daily supplements containing a fish-oil extract.

Only you can decide whether training at home or in a health club is right for you. Your personal goals, present physical condition, preferences, financial situation, and schedule all need to be considered before making the final decision. Most of time, it really doesn't matter one way or the other. I have seen hundreds of people get in phenomenal shape exercising at home, and hundreds of people do the same working out in a gym. The most important thing is action and consistency. If you haven't already done so, make the decision and get started today.
