A Whiter Shade Of Pale
by Dr. Robert Osgoodby
Blinded by the white. That's what millions of tooth obsessed consumers are looking for. Do over the counter whitening products really work? The tooth whitening industry has exploded over the past five years. Americans spend over $64 billion annually to brighten their smiles. But most dentists say many people are taking whitening too far resulting in several ailments including irritated gums, bleeding gums, and severe tooth sensitivity.
Besides attaining unnaturally gleaming smiles, bleach can do real damage. Bleaching gel when left on the teeth too long, bleaches the surrounding oral tissue, forming white patches in the mouth, and causing the tongue, gums and throat to burn. Many people are willing to suffer for beauty. Pregnant women are advised not to bleach.
Some whitening toothpastes include abrasive ingredients. Watch out for sodium pyrophosphate and tetrasodium phosphate. They break down stains, but also can break down tooth enamel, making your teeth more likely to darken.
Whitening is not bad, it can make your teeth look great, but you have to do it in moderation. Follow your dentists instructions on how to bleach your teeth and for how long. If you choose to use over the counter bleaching products, follow the exact directions and resist the temptation to keep the bleach on longer. Most important, make regular visits to your dentist. You can not replace regular office dental cleanings with bleaching. You can not bleach out a cavity and bleach on untreated cavities can cause severe pain.
If you decide to use an over the counter whitener, here are several products recommended by one of the top dental clinics in Manhattan:
1. Crest White Strips - Though the strips only cover the front teeth, they brighten better than most over the counter products.
2. Colgate Total Toothpaste Plus Whitening - this toothpaste has it all - tartar control, whitening, breath freshener - without abrasive ingredients.
3. Reach Whitening Floss - this floss is made of silica which polishes away stains between teeth and prevents new ones from forming.

A woman was having a medical problem - her husband snoring. So she called
the doctor one morning, and
asked him if there was anything he could do to relieve
her "suffering."
"Well, there is one operation I can perform that will
cure your husband, but it is really rather expensive.
It will cost $1000 down, and payments of $450 for 24 months, plus payments
for extras."
"My goodness!" the woman exclaimed, "sounds like leasing
a new sports car!"
"Hmmm," the doctor murmured, "too obvious, huh?"

Dear Dr. Osgoodby:
I train each body part once a week. I do 6 exercises for each muscle, 5 sets each. I feel like I have hit a plateau. Do you think I am over training?
-----
Dear Steve:
Many of the experts have different philosophies of which body parts you should train together, how many times a week you should train them, and how many sets you should do for each muscle group.
Personally, I do a push-pull routine. Day 1: Chest, Shoulders, Triceps, Day 2: Legs, Day 3: Back, Biceps, Forearms, Day 4: Off, Day 5 = Day 1, Day 6 = Day 2, Day 7 = Day 3.
For major muscle groups, I do four exercises, four sets each. For minor muscle groups I do 3 exercises, 4 sets each. I take all sets to muscle failure. If you're at a plateau, I suggest you give this routine a try. Also, mix it up. Every once in a while throw in a new exercise to shock the muscle group.
Warmly,
Steve Tomarello

********How do I Get There From
Here?********
by James Groves
Last month was the first in a series about simple, easy to
follow steps to improving health. Take each small step I give
you and turn it into a habit, just like combing your hair or
brushing your teeth.
This month I'm going to share ideas about drinking water.
Now, I know you've heard this before, but it's worth repeating.
Drink 8 glasses of water every day. But don't grab a glass
and run to the sink because you should not drink tap water.
Most municipal water companies use chlorine as a bleaching
agent and germicide. Did you know that in 1993, over 400,000
people were infected with a parasite called Cryptosporidium caused
by a break down of a state-of-the-art water filtering system. And in
1996, residents of Washington, DC were told to boil their tap water
because of high levels of coliform bacteria.
What are the alternatives? The first one is bottled water. Did
you know that Americans spent $3 billion last year buying bottled
water? Most brands are better than tap water. Try different ones
until you find a brand that tastes good and settles well in your
stomach. Avoid the inexpensive store brand water in a gallon jug
labeled "drinking water." Most of these brands are not filtered
using reverse osmosis.
The best method for providing clean water is a home water
treatment system. Check out the features of several systems
before you purchase one for your home.
Here's how to begin a water drinking program. Begin and end each
day with at least one glass of water. Drink one to two glasses of
water before each meal. Instead of drinking coffee or a soda during
a midmorning or afternoon break, drink a glass of water. And of course
drink a full glass of water when you take your nutritional supplements.
Water is a free nutritional supplement that we should all take
advantage of. Drink up!!

Dr. Earl Mindell's Wellness Update ==================================
Conservative Medical Group Endorses Vitamins
Finally, the medical field has officially recognized the benefits of nutritional supplements. Even though approximately one third of Americans take a multivitamin each day, the American Medical Association (AMA) has been reluctant to admit that we simply cannot receive the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of vitamins from the food we eat. In fact, we may be receiving more pesticides than vitamins from the foods we eat. Additionally, recent studies confirm that the some of the AMA's daily allowance levels are inadequate.
As a result of compelling data, doctors are endorsing the use of a daily multivitamin and are even encouraging increased levels of specific vitamins to lower risk of chronic diseases like cancer, heart disease, and osteoporosis. Doctors are beginning to educate their patients on the value of nutritional supplements. This is a major paradigm shift for the American Medical Association and strengthens our position to close half the hospitals in America! -----

Whitening your teeth will improve your smile, but don't overdue it. Stay away from over the counter products that are abrasive or contain sodium pyrophosphate and tetrasodium pyrophosphate. Visit your dentist every six months. Follow your Dentist's instructions about how often to bleach your teeth and for how long.
