The Truth About Weight Loss And Fad Diets
by Dr. Robert Osgoodby

If you stick to just about any weight loss diet, you will lose weight. The lack of knowledge on how to correctly lose weight and burn fat is one of the main reasons most people are not successful in keeping the weight off long-term, and also why people spend billions of dollars a year on useless weight loss products and programs.

Most people start a diet because they are upset with their physical appearance and the way they feel. Fad diets are extremely popular because you can lose weight in a short period of time. The problem with most fad diets is the vast majority of pounds you shed are lean body mass (muscles and internal organs) and water weight. Plus, most people only stick with a fad diet for a short period of time and quickly fall back to their old bad habits.

If you want to decrease your body fat percentage and keep the excess weight off for good, you don't need a fad diet, you need a lifestyle change. Consistently eating a healthy diet combined with regular strength training and cardiovascular exercise allows you to burn excess body fat while retaining your lean body tissue and maintain your goal weight.

Over the years, I have heard every excuse imaginable why someone can't eat healthy or exercise regularly. In my opinion, there is no such thing as a good excuse why you can not improve your health, appearance, and quality of life. Believe it or not, it's easier than you think.

You can get rapid results with only having to dedicate 3 hours a week to exercise. You can easily add three extra hours to your week by getting up 30 minutes earlier, or staying up 30 minutes later. You don't need to by an expensive health club membership or invest thousands of dollars in exercise equipment. All you need is a television, VCR and a body shaping video tape - there are literally hundreds to choose from ranging from beginners to advanced fitness levels.

Pre-prepare healthy meals by cooking in bulk and refrigerating your meals. Make a large salad. Broil a few packages of chicken breasts. Buy enough fruit for the entire week. (3 servings per day) This is perfect for people who are on the run and constantly eating fast food for convenience. It's quick, easy and takes very little preparation time. Throw your food for the day in a bag and you're off! You may need to invest in some Tupperware.

Welcome to McDonald's

On the way to pre-school, the doctor had left her stethoscope on the car seat, and her little girl picked it up and began playing with it.

"Be still, my heart," thought the doctor, "my daughter wants to follow in my footsteps!" Then the child spoke into the instrument, "Welcome to McDonald's. May I take your order?"

Football player: Coach, my doctor says I can't play football.
Coach: You didn't have to go to a doctor. I could have told you that.

A recent college graduate took a new job in a hilly Eastern city and began commuting each day to work through a tiring array of tunnels, bridges and traffic jams. Thinking it would make the trip more bearable, he invited several coworkers to share the ride. However, the commute actually got more stressful, especially the trips through the tunnels. He consulted the company doctor.

"Doc," the frustrated commuter complained, "I'm fine on the bridges, in the traffic, in the day and at night, and even when Joe forgets to bathe all week. But now, when I get in the tunnels with those four other guys crowded into the car, I get anxious and dizzy, and I feel like I'm going to explode."

With out further analysis, the doctor announced he had diagnosed the ailment.

"What is it, Doc? Am I going insane?"

"No, no, no, my boy. You have something that is becoming more and more common."

"Tell me! What is it?"

"You have what is known as Carpool Tunnel Syndrome."

Dear Dr. Osgoodby:

I heard it is impossible to increase your muscularity and at the same time lose weight. Is this true? I also do a lot of cardiovascular exercise, will this decrease my lean body mass?

Sincerely,
Jim Lynch

Dear Jim:

Great question!! Believe it or not, it is possible to lose a significant amount of weight and at the same time increase your musculature or lean body mass.

Can you lose lean body mass doing too much cardio? You sure can. You can also lose lean body mass if you are not taking in enough calories or eating the wrong foods.

The key to losing weight and retaining or increasing your lean body mass is the proper combination of weight training, diet, and cardiovascular exercise. To be successful, you must have all three pieces to the puzzle.

Thanks again.

Warmly,
Dr. Robert Osgoodby

One has to eat 11 pounds of potatoes to put on 1 pound of weight — a potato has no more calories than an apple.

********How do I Get There From Here?********
by James Groves

This the third health tip in a series about simple, easy to follow steps to improving health. Take each small step I give you and turn it into a habit, just like combing your hair or brushing your teeth.

Your mom was right, vegetables are good for you. The new government guidelines now suggest 7 to 9 servings of fruits and vegetables per day not just four or five. It is through these servings that we take in fiber. The foods highest in fiber include peas, apples, pears, and pinto beans.

Fruits and vegetables also contain immune-boosting phyto- chemicals including antioxidants, which boost your immune system and promote good health.

Here are some ideas to help you increase your intake of fruits and vegetables each day. Add a green salad to your dinner meal every day. Add an assortment of vegetables to this salad such as carrots, red cabbage, radishes, cucumbers, alfalfa sprouts, peppers, whatever you can find that is in season.

Try to eat fresh fruits and vegetables. If you don't have the time to cook only fresh vegetables, then buy frozen bags and don't overcook them. Try to avoid canned vegetables because 60% of the vitamin C content is lost during the blanching process, a process that takes place before vegetables are canned. And only 6% of vitamin C is left in canned peas by the time you serve them to your family.

I suggest that you either purchase organically grown fruits and vegetables or use a special rinse product called Healthy Harvest Fruit & Vegetable Rinse, available at most health food stores. This special rinse helps to protect your family from pesticides used on most fruits and vegetables.

Encourage all of your family members to snack on raw vegetables and fresh fruit rather than cookies or a sweet snack. Add fruit to breakfast cereal or oatmeal. Offer fruit smoothies for breakfast or add fruit to yogurt. Send fruit and raw vegetables in your children's lunches and offer these as dessert rather than ice cream or pie. Keep offering and eventually everyone in the family will be enjoying the benefits of fresh fruit and raw vegetables.

These health tips can only be found in Dr.Osgoodby's Body Transformations Newsletter.

Dr. Earl Mindell's Wellness Update ==================================

Weight Training

What about weight training and other forms of resistance training? Earlier recommendations were clear on the importance of resistance exercise, both for weight loss and for osteoporosis prevention. Muscle uses up more energy than fat even when you're sitting still. It follows that the more muscle mass you have, the more calories you're going to burn when you're sitting around doing nothing. In other words, greater muscle mass increases your basal metabolic rate (BMR).

This is definitely true, but let's be realistic about how much the time you spend pumping iron is really going to pay off in the form of weight loss, improved health, and longer life. The average person isn't physically able to put on very much extra muscle weight-maybe two or three pounds-and doing so gets harder with age. Women have an especially difficult time putting on muscle weight. Besides, most women I've encountered don't want to bulk up-they want to "sculpt" and slim down. And no amount of resistance training is going to sculpt a body that is padded all over with excess fat. The washboard abs and the perfect posterior are underneath the fat, and fat has to be shed before they'll show through.

Unless you're truly interested in bulking up or are in need of improved muscular power for a sport or injury recovery, use resistance training as part of your aerobic workout. Try circuit training, where you do 12 to 16 repetitions of each of several exercises at a low resistance. Immediately move on to another exercise that uses different muscle groups. This will keep your heart rate at or near target range, and will help to keep your whole body strong and flexible. Make this part of your 60 minutes of exercise two to three times a week. You can do this even if you don't have a gym membership or a set of weights; do exercises that utilize body weight as resistance, such as push-ups (use the wall if your arms aren't strong enough to do the traditional kind), lunges, squats (put your back against a wall and step your heels about 18 inches from the wall and bend your knees until they've reached 90 degrees, keeping your weight back so that you're fully leaning back onto the wall, then straighten your legs again), and stomach crunches. Hire a trainer for a few sessions if you feel lost when trying to do these sorts of exercises.

You should stretch every time you exercise. Two or three minutes spent stretching major muscle groups should serve to keep you limber and free of injury. Practice deep breathing and relaxation during stretching sessions.

Fad diets are not the answer for losing weight and keeping it off. Most of the pounds you drop are from water loss and losing lean body mass - not burning fat. If you want to decrease your body fat percentage, lose weight and keep it off, you have to change your lifestyle, eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly.
