You Can't Change The Laws Of Thermodynamics.
by Dr. Robert Osgoodby

If You Want To Lose Weight, Don't Worry About Fats And Carbs, Cut Down On Calories.

Some experts argue that carbohydrate and fat content matter far more than calories – I disagree. Weight loss isn't brain surgery. It boils down to a very simple science. To lose one pound, you must eliminate 3,500 calories either through diet or exercise. If your body needs 2,000 calories a day to maintain your present weight, you would need to create a 500 calorie deficit each day to lose one pound a week. From purely a weight loss standpoint, it doesn't matter if calories come from protein, fat, sugar, or carbohydrates. A calorie is a calorie in terms of weight loss.

The truth is, if you're counting carbs, you are still counting calories. Foods high in carbs such as french fries, cake and cookies are loaded with calories, so eliminating these foods will help you lose weight. If you go on a diet where you eat 1,500 calories a day, it doesn't matter if 10% of your diet consists of carbohydrates, or if 40% of your diet consists of carbohydrates – your weight loss will be the same. Even the low-carb Atkins diet in reality is a low-calorie diet.

If your only goal is weight loss, it doesn't matter if you consume fat calories, protein calories, or carbohydrate calories as long as you are in caloric deficit. Although I don't recommend it, you can lose weight eating 1,500 calories of butter a day. However if you're overeating, you will gain more weight on a diet high in fats than on a diet high in carbohydrates because it takes more energy for your body to convert carbohydrates to body fat than it takes to convert fat to body fat.

Are some fats better than other fats? Yes. Not all fat is created equal. Your body needs healthy fats such as monosaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats which contain essential omega fatty acids. Saturated fat found in butter and beef is considered unhealthy in excess, but your body still needs some of it for normal cellular function. The fat to avoid is trans fat, also called hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated fat, shortening or oil. Trans fats have been linked to cancer and heart disease.

A dietician was once addressing a large audience in Chicago.

"The material we put into our stomachs is enough to have killed most of us sitting here, years ago.

Red meat is awful. Soft drinks erode your stomach lining.

Chinese food is loaded with MSG.

Vegetables can be disastrous, and none of us realizes the long term harm caused by the germs in our drinking water.

But there is one thing that is the most dangerous of all and we all have, or will, eat it.

Can anyone here tell me what food it is that causes the most grief and suffering for years after eating it?"

A 75 year old man in the front row stood up and said,

"Wedding cake."

Walter was sitting in the doctor's office for his annual physical going over a few fine points about his health with his doctor. The doctor said, "Your blood pressure is a little high, you know Walter, you need to watch your diet and lose a little weight."

"But doc, I'm losing weight more and more each day."

"Oh really? How are you doing it?" asked the doctor.

"Well, just six weeks ago, I'd eat lunch at 12:00 and have a snack around 3:00. Just today I had breakfast at 7:30, waited 2 hours, had a snack at 9:30 then I waited an hour and a half and ate lunch at 11:00, then I waited 45 minutes and had a snack before coming here"

"And with this regiment you're losing weight?" asked the doctor.

"Yeah," Walter said excitedly. "More meals and less wait!"

********How do I Get There From Here?********
by James Groves

This month's health tip is in response to a subscriber's questions about sugar substitutes.  But before I begin, I'd like to thank Cindy for bringing up this issue and her honest concern for good health. She wrote and asked me if there were any benefits to using regular sugar over any possible side effects to using sugar substitutes.

I was trying to think back to a time when I did use and enjoy sugar.  One fond memory I have is of my Grandmother melting brown sugar in butter and then pouring it over a plain cake.  But the buzz word here is "brown sugar."  Sheused a natural, unbleached sugar.  If you enjoy the taste of sugar, try to find something like this, that's natural and thenonly use a small amount.

Sugar substitutes are just what the name implies, substitutes, something artificial or chemically produced.  One such example
that is used extensively is aspartame.  It has several very real, and very risky side effects.  It can cause seizures in people with
phenylketonuria, a metabolic disorder that makes it difficult to break down phenylalanine, an amino acid found in aspartame.  And there have been reports of aspartame's connection to headaches, and in severe cases it has caused other allergy like symptoms.

Here are my suggestions for those of you who enjoy the sweet taste of sugar.  Eat lots of fruit.  Most of them are naturally sweetened with fructose.  And unless you are specifically allergic to certain fruits, these "sugars" won't cause you any roblems.  Try using honey instead of sugar.  If you really insist on using sugar, use less of it.  Try to find natural sugars, ones that aren't refined or bleached.

Join me next month and we'll talk about ways to get a good night's sleep. These health tips can only be found in Dr.Osgoodby's Body Transformations Newsletter. Join me next month and I'll talk about sugar substitutes.

James Groves

Dr. Earl Mindell's Wellness Update
==================================

Does eating eggs increase my risk of having a heart attack?

A recent study from the Netherlands reports that eggs contain betaine, a valuable nutrient that lowers homocysteine levels. Researchers conclude that betaine is particularly effective in patients with a condition known as homocystinuria, lowering levels by as much as 75 percent. However, the preventative results in healthy volunteers are not as dramatic.

Although folic acid and vitamins B6 and B12 are key nutrients in lowering homocysteine levels, this study suggests that eggs are a significant source of betaine which may also lower homocysteine levels and actually reduce the risk of heart disease.

If you need to lose weight, you must be in caloric deficit. This can be accomplished by cutting down your caloric intake, or increasing the amount of calories you burn by exercising. I recommend both. Even though a calorie is a calorie when it comes to weight loss, a calorie is not a calorie when it comes to your health. Make sure your daily diet includes several servings of fruit and vegetables and whenever possible, avoid foods that contain trans fat.
