How To Have A Great Vacation And Still Come Home
by Frank Barnhill, M.D.
At least three times a week, I'm asked; "How can I go on vacation, have fun, and still feel like coming back after it's over". These people probably had at least one vacation from "you know where" in the past.
How can a person just get back from vacation and be stressed, depressed or anxious? It may surprise you that nearly 30% of us dread going on or returning from a vacation. What gives? After all, a vacation is supposed to be designed for rest, relaxation, recreation, and emotional and physical rejuvenation.
The key word here is "designed". You must design or plan your vacation to meet those goals of the three "R's" and E&P. Here are a few tips to help you plan your vacation so that you won't leave with a case of the dreads, have a great time while you're gone, and aren't likely to return home with post vacation blues.
1. Start planning your vacation at least a month in advance by paying bills due while you're gone. You could even write checks and get a friend or relative to mail them on time. Remembering you forgot to pay the light bill on your fourth day at Myrtle Beach is a bummer.
2. Make arrangements for someone to check the house, mail, newspapers, and handle emergencies at least two weeks in advance. That way, you won't worry about it.
3. Do housecleaning, yard work and office work the week before you leave home. Don't put it off for when you come back. You will just end up worrying about that unfinished work for your entire vacation, creating tension and dread for what you have waiting on you when you return home or to work.
4. Budget your entire trip and add 20% for good measure. Nothing spoils and shortens a vacation more than running short of money.
5. Make reservations for airline tickets, rental cars, hotels, restaurants, and special recreation as far in advance as feasible. Just think how a whiney, sleepy, hungry 5 year old will get on your nerves while standing in line for an hour at a rental car lot.
6. Plan ahead for bad weather. If it rains all day at Disney World, are you going anyhow? Maybe you will need to have an alternate type of entertainment. Remember the 5 year old in line at the rental car place? Think about being in a 12 by 20 foot hotel room for 12 hours with that very same 5 year old!
7. Plan for vacation surprises and special treats for yourself and the family. An on-vacation surprise could be an unexpected visit to a popular ice cream parlor for after supper treats.
8. Be sure that each member of your family takes back a memento of the trip. It needs to be something that reminds them of the great time you had. Buy a group picture of the family at Universal Studios and display it on your desk at work. Memories of good times are priceless.
9. Spend the day before you come home doing low impact things. Play around the pool or go on a day hike. Trying to cram too much into that last day is a common mistake that actually creates more stress than it's worth. If you get in at 2 am and have to get up at 6 am to leave, you didn't do yourself a favor.
10. Avoid heavy meals on the evening before you come home. The kids will be less likely to get carsick when they get the "going home jitters".
11. Organize the trip home as thoroughly as you did the trip to your vacation destination. If you're not prepared to leave, then the trip home will be terrible and filled with dread.
12. On the way back home, talk about the good things that happened and how much fun you had. When you finally get back home, invite friends and family to look at your pictures or listen to your vacation adventures.
A vacation that others wish they had been on "is worth its weight in gold"!
We hope these tips will help you have a great vacation this year.

1. A guy walks into a bar and approaches the barman, "Can I have
a pint of Less, please?"
"I'm sorry sir," the barman replies, looking slightly puzzled,
"I've not come across that one before. Is it a spirit?"
"I've no idea," replies the guy, "The thing is, I went to see
my doctor last week and he told me that I should drink less."

One day a new mother went out to run some errands,
leaving her husband in charge of their baby son for the
day.
The proud father played with his son all morning, but
after a few hours, the baby began to cry uncontrollably.
The father tried everything he could think of to get the
baby to stop - he offered him the bottle, burped him,
rocked him, but nothing seemed to work and the baby
just cried more and more.
Finally, the new dad became worried, and decided to
take the baby to the pediatrician.
The doctor began to examine the squalling baby, not
finding anything wrong. Finally, he worked his way down
and undid the child's diaper. "Well, here's your problem,"
the doctor chuckled, pointing at the overloaded diaper.
"This baby hasn't been changed all day!"
The father scratched his head, perplexed. "But..." he
said, "The diaper package says it's good for up to 10
pounds!"

I took my daughter to the doctor for her 2-year-old check. They had her do coordination tests, like stacking blocks, and they watch and see if they walk properly. And then the doctor said, "Allison, can you stand on one foot for me?" So she walked over and stood on his foot.

Trivia
Despite its reputation for being finicky, the average cat consumes about 127,750 calories a year, nearly 28 times its own weight in food and the same amount again in liquids. In case you were wondering, cats cannot survive on a vegetarian diet.

Avocados Can Lower Your Cholesterol
Are you're one of those people who enjoy eating avocados?
If you are, then you could be lowering your cholesterol
every time you eat one. A recent study from Australia
showed that people who ate 1 1/2 avocados per day
lowered their cholesterol levels from an average of 236 to
217.
Now here's the twist to this study. Before going on the
avocado diet, these people spent three weeks on a low-fat
diet. The result was an average decrease in cholesterol levels
of only 4.9 percent compared to 8.2 percent on the avocado diet.
Here's another avocado fact you're going to love. The avocados
preserved the levels of HDL (the good cholesterol), but on the
low-fat diet these good HDL's went down 14%.
The answer is one word: monounsaturates, the main fat found in
avocados and the same one that we all recognize as being healthy
that is found in olive oil. So eat up, enjoy avocados, and stop
worrying about the fat!

Coral Calcium
Myth or miracle?
If you're keeping tabs on the latest trends in nutritional supplementation, you've most likely heard about coral calcium. It's being discussed on radio and television infomercials, and hundreds of Websites are extolling its virtues and selling various forms of it to the public. Other sources devote themselves to shooting down anyone who would claim that coral calcium is a good thing, using the most outrageous examples to illustrate that it's nothing more than a scam.
The controversy that surrounds coral calcium is a strong example of what's wrong with the supplement industry. Because the manufacturing of supplements is largely unregulated, less ethical entrepreneurs can toss together some ingredients and call it the latest, most miraculous new thing, without having to substantiate the nutritional claims they make on the Internet, radio, and television. Those who truly have a valuable nutritional supplement to sell, or good health information to disseminate, end up categorized right along with the con artists. The true value of a new supplement can get swept out of view in the commotion that results.
The worst of the lot proclaim that coral calcium can heal virtually any illness, including cancer. They also say that it's brought severely ill people back to health, and that it's transformed individuals paralyzed with multiple sclerosis into long-distance runners. Other coral calcium supporters and sellers only mildly twist, ignore, or exaggerate the facts to suit their needs.
No scientific studies exist to back up most of the claims made about coral calcium. Often, it's not possible to get the needed funding for studies of supplements or natural medicine, and so we must rely upon the word of scientists, patients, and health care practitioners who have seen the difference these substances can make firsthand. Still, the modern world requires rigorous scientific examination of natural products before it will give them the validity it has given to prescription drugs. Otherwise, we're just taking someone's word-and that person may very well stand to profit from your believing his or her unsubstantiated claims to be words of truth.
Coral calcium-which is, most simply, calcium derived from coral-is neither a miracle drug or a worthless, overpriced scam. Coral is a source of supplemental calcium that tends to be very low in contaminants and that naturally contains complementary minerals. These other minerals found in coral also have their own important duties in the maintenance of bone health, cardiovascular health, and good health in general.

If you need to lose weight, you must be in caloric deficit. This can be accomplished by cutting down your caloric intake, or increasing the amount of calories you burn by exercising. I recommend both. Even though a calorie is a calorie when it comes to weight loss, a calorie is not a calorie when it comes to your health. Make sure your daily diet includes several servings of fruit and vegetables and whenever possible, avoid foods that contain trans fat.
