Building Self-Esteem in Kids
by Frank Barnhill, M.D.

Some parents seem concerned that society imposes rules or guidelines on their children for growing up that actually slow their course toward maturity. Some argue that their kids are being "programmed" to fit society's model child and adult. What would happen if everyone were raised with the same behavior traits? We probably would not have racecar drivers, football players, firemen, or even guys that would want to start hamburger restaurants. These are all high-risk behaviors and society tends to frown on high-risk behavior.

There are clearly instances where fooling with a child's natural behavioral growth can result in more damage than good. Your job as a parent is to provide your child with the knowledge and tools needed to grow to a responsible, mature person. Sometimes, risk taking must be part of building self-esteem. With this in mind, let's look at building self-esteem in your child, without interfering with their natural behavioral growth.

No child can succeed in life thinking the word "no". How many times a day do you say no? Experts estimate the word no is spoken ten times more often than yes. If a kid hears no often enough, that's the attitude he'll take. He'll believe the answer to everything is no. Practice ways to say yes, but still guide them in the right direction.

Allow your kids to make mistakes. Hopefully, when they were learning to walk, you didn't pick them up every time they fell. If they don't make mistakes, they won't learn how to avoid those mistakes or be proud of themselves when they solve or prevent a problem because of past experience. Remember, they may make the same mistake more than once.

Help them organize in their own way. How hard was it to get you to clean your room when you were ten? The difficulty was in that you had your ways to organize and your parents had theirs. The same is true of your kids. Teach them how to organize and then let them show you how they wish to do it. If it's their plan, they will feel responsible for it.

Teach them to start and finish. Failure to start is the number one reason we fail at doing anything. Being a self-starter will help your kids organize their time and be more successful in life. Nothing makes us feel better than to know we have finished something and hopefully finished it well.

Teach them the art of not giving up. Perseverance builds character and self esteem through good reputation and ability to reach goals and finish a job. If it takes your child sixteen times to master the art of tying his shoes, then so be it. Encourage him to keep trying until he gets it right. Avoid saying things that discourage like "you'll never get it".

Don't force them into esteem building activities. Many parents have the mistaken belief that if they push their child into sports, piano lessons, playing in the school band, or acting in a community play, that will build character and self esteem. It will, if the child really wants to engage in those activities. You should not place your child in a position where he or she is virtually guaranteed to fail and lose self-esteem.

Look for behavior potential in their actions. If your child is good at math, then help him become great at math. If she's good at violin, then encourage her violin lessons. If you watch carefully, you can spot potential in your child. What about your eight year-old who plays teacher to her dolls? Do you see a schoolteacher?

Value their input. Listen and then listen some more. "My parents don't listen to me" is one of the most common complaints I hear from kids today. When you actually hear what they say, instead of just vaguely listening, they will feel the value you have placed on what they say. If what you hear is not clear, ask for an explanation.

Think quantity not just quality. Children learn by repetition not single instruction. It seems quantity time is better than quality when it comes to children learning behavior skills. Your child will learn good manners and how to get along with others by watching how others do so. Think about bad habits they pick up from their friends, such as smoking, drinking and cussing. Who are they spending the most time with?

Teach your kids to feel good about themselves and you will give your kids a big edge in getting along with others and being successful in life. Dr. Frank drfrank@drhuggiebear.com

Food For Thought

A dietician was once addressing a large audience in Chicago. "The material we put into our stomachs is enough to have killed most of us sitting here, years ago.

Red meat is awful. Soft drinks erode your stomach lining. Chinese food is loaded with MSG. Vegetables can be disastrous, and none of us realizes the long-term harm caused by the germs in our drinking water."

"But there is one thing that is the most dangerous of all and we all have, or will, eat it. Can anyone here tell me what food it is that causes the most grief and suffering for years after eating it?"

A 75-year-old man in the front row stood up and said,

"Wedding cake."

-----

For his wife's birthday party, a doctor ordered a cake with this inscription:

"You are not getting older, You are just getting better."

When asked how he wanted it arranged, he said, "Just put 'You are not getting older' at the top, and 'You are just getting better' at the bottom."

It wasn't until the good doctor was helped to his feet after being hit over the head with his wife's walking stick, that he discovered it read:

"YOU ARE NOT GETTING OLDER AT THE TOP,
YOU ARE JUST GETTING BETTER AT THE BOTTOM."

-----

Walter was sitting in the doctor's office for his annual physical going over a few fine points about his health with his doctor. The doctor said, "Your blood pressure is a little high, you know Walter, you need to watch your diet and lose a little weight."

"But doc, I'm losing weight more and more each day."

"Oh really? How are you doing it?" asked the doctor.

"Well, just six weeks ago, I'd eat lunch at 12:00 and have a snack around 3:00. Just today I had breakfast at 7:30, waited 2 hours, had a snack at 9:30 then I waited an hour and a half and ate lunch at 11:00, then I waited 45 minutes and had a snack before coming here"

"And with this regiment you're losing weight?" asked the doctor.

"Yeah," Walter said excitedly. "More meals and less wait!"

Trivia

One tablespoon of most brands of ketchup contains 4 grams of sugar, 15 calories and 190 grams of sodium. There is no fat in ketchup and processed red tomatoes are supposed to be a good source of lycopene, which may reduce the risk of cancer and other diseases.

********How do I Get There From Here?********

Here's another tip you can use to lower your cholesterol. Last month it was avocados and this month it's almonds.

In a study conducted last year, researchers found that when people ate 3 1/2 ounces of almonds a day, their cholesterol level dropped 20 points. This study conducted at the YMCA Cardiac Rehabilitation Unit in Palo Alto, California worked with 30 people who added nuts (both whole and ground almonds) to a low-fat diet.

The results showed the cholesterol drop came from the harmful LDL and the good, protective HDL was unchanged.

So here are some tips about eating nuts and avocados. You can add either one of them to salads or eat them as snacks. Avocados can be sliced and used on sandwiches. Here is one of my wife's favorite lunches. Lightly toast whole bread, then spread a little Dijon mustard on it, followed by slices of avocado, cucumbers, and tomatoes.

These health tips can only be found in Dr.Osgoodby's Body Transformations Newsletter. Join me next month and I'll talk about Almonds. .

Ephedra: Sorting The Hype From The Truth

I am disturbed by the huge media attention given to ephedra. So many people are killed every year by properly prescribed prescription drugs and so little is mentioned about that! Also, keep in mind that many over-the-counter medications contain concentrations of pseudoephedrine (the synthetic version of ephedra) that far exceed the amount of ephedra found in supplements.

Ephedra can be a handy remedy for severe allergy attacks or asthma, and can help with the battle of the bulge, but it's like any medicine, natural or otherwise: it should be used with respect and understanding of what it does in the body. Caffeine is also a powerful stimulant, and too much of that will cause problems in susceptible people, as well-but I've noticed that no one's trying to ban caffeine.

The flap over ephedra reached a fever pitch recently due to the untimely death of Baltimore Orioles pitcher Steve Bechler on February 17, 2003. He collapsed and died on the practice field, and the coroner's explanation of his death was multiple organ failure due to heat stroke. A weight-loss supplement containing ephedra was found in his locker. Since that time, several articles have appeared in national newspapers about the so-called ephedra controversy, and TV news is earnestly addressing the subject for their viewers. Some organizations are clamoring for the FDA to ban ephedra completely.

Three professors from the Center for Exercise, Nutrition and Preventive Health Research at Baylor University have written an article that does a lot to clear the confusion around any relationship there might have been between ephedra and Steve Bechler's death. They make a few points that won't likely be mentioned in the stories you'll read in the mainstream press.

First off, toxicology reports haven't yet confirmed that Bechler actually took the supplement containing ephedra that morning. It turns out, however, that Bechler's risk of heatstroke was high regardless of any supplements he was using. He had a prior history of heat illness, which increases the likelihood of having more of them. Hypertension and liver problems were both part of his medical history, and his half-brother died of an aneurism at age 20 when he became overheated while playing baseball.

Bechler was overweight and had been trying to shed a few pounds. He had not eaten solid food for two or three days before he died, and had gone out to do conditioning drills (which he wasn't really fit enough to do at the time) on a hot South Florida field. It was obvious to anyone watching that he was struggling to keep up, and he was making matters worse by wearing multiple layers of clothing to try to accelerate his weight loss. No one noticed that he was in trouble until his core body temperature had reached 106 degrees and he collapsed, and by then his organs had begun to fail.

The Baylor professors wrote in their report that "It has been extensively documented that untrained, overweight, and unacclimatized people who perform excessive exercise in heat/humidity are at great risk of heat illness and heat stroke-particularly if they have become dehydrated and are trying to lose weight quickly."

What really appears to be happening here is that ephedra is being used as a scapegoat by coaches and trainers who should have better supervised the training of this particular athlete. Hopefully, the end result will be better counseling on diet and weight loss for athletes, and less emphasis on traditional notions that it's okay for athletes to push themselves past their limits while training. Avoiding heatstroke in hot climates requires that athletes stay well hydrated, eat nutritious foods before training, and avoid pushing themselves too hard. This is especially true for those who are overweight or out of shape. A well-rounded multivitamin and mineral supplement lends added support for tough workouts.

Kreider RB, Greenwood M, Greenwood L, "The alleged role of ephedra in the death of a professional baseball player," from the Exercise and Sport Nutrition Lab, Center for Exercise, Nutrition and Preventive Health Research, Baylor University; February 21, 2003.

If you need to lose weight, you must be in caloric deficit. This can be accomplished by cutting down your caloric intake, or increasing the amount of calories you burn by exercising. I recommend both. Even though a calorie is a calorie when it comes to weight loss, a calorie is not a calorie when it comes to your health. Make sure your daily diet includes several servings of fruit and vegetables and whenever possible, avoid foods that contain trans fat.
