A lot of patients say that life really sucks when they're feeling depressed. I'm sure most of them do have outside problems that cause stress, such as money, marriage, and job related problems. But, outside influences are not responsible for the entire problem.
Studies show that people rarely get depressed when their brain is making enough of those chemicals called neurotransmitters, such as dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine. These substances are produced by the brain in very small amounts and help you store and process information.
When these processes are normal, you feel good and have few if any signs of depression. When there aren't enough neurotransmitters to go around, guess what? You become depressed.
It's true that having a lot of "outside problems" can weigh a person down, but these neurotransmitters are really at the base of depression and it's many symptoms. Counseling and medications can help the brain start making "feel good" chemicals again, even when stress is on going. However, the first step in treatment of depression is the same in as in any disease: you must realize that something is wrong and seek help.
There are many scales used to help individuals assess or grade depression. Most allow you to assign numbers to your responses to determine if your symptoms are suggestive of mild, moderate or severe depression.
In general, these rating scales are probably more useful in evaluating how you are doing after starting treatment for depression. A lot of doctors feel that if you have any symptoms of depression and can tell that these symptoms are having a negative impact on your way of life, you should be evaluated and possibly treated for depression.
The following list of depression signs and symptoms is provided to allow you to evaluate your well being and not to determine the severity of a disease. Let me caution you that a lot of people initially deny they have symptoms of depression and if you are to benefit from this little self-test, you must be honest in your answers. After all, if you can't be honest with yourself, then whom are you kidding?
Here are the major symptoms and signs of depression:
Feeling blue, sad or down more than usual Crying for no reason or over little things Feeling just as tired when you get up as when you went to bed Having problems getting to sleep, awakening early, going back to sleep
Sleeping too much and frequently tired during the day A change in appetite, either weight gain or weight loss without really trying Can't concentrate or focus well; your mind seems foggy now Can't seem to complete things because you lose interest or get bored easily
Everything seems to be on your shoulders and it makes you irritable Can't make decisions easily and avoid taking responsibility Don't enjoy being around other people, socializing or doing things like you used to Don't have fun or do your hobbies anymore
Don't like yourself or what you have become Often feel useless, un-needed, or in others way Often think about death or dying whether it's about others or yourself
If you answered yes to more than 5 of these symptoms or signs, then you probably have some level of depression. If you have either of the last three symptoms of worthlessness or thoughts of death, then most doctors would agree you are moderately or severely depressed and should see a doctor very soon.
Depression and the communication problems that go with depression are probably the third or fourth most common causes of divorce. Just being depressed saps your energy and keeps you from performing at your peak level. Millionaires with "rags to riches stories" often tell of how they had to defeat their depression before they could get a grip on their economic problems. When they were successful at beating depression, most went on to be very successful in life.
From the experience of treating thousands of depressed persons, I know it's hard for anyone to be successful in life and constantly try to fight off depression. If you have the symptoms, please visit your doctor soon and consider treatment. Have a happy life! Dr. Frank

This guy goes into his dentist's office, because
something is wrong with his mouth.
After a brief examination, the dentist exclaims, "Holy Smoke!
That plate I installed in your mouth about six months ago has
nearly completely corroded! What on
earth have you been eating?"
"Well... the only thing I can think of is this...my wife made
me some asparagus about four months ago with this stuff on
it... Hollandaise sauce she called it... and doctor, I'm
talking DELICIOUS! I've never tasted anything like it, and
ever since then I've been putting it on everything...meat,
fish, toast, vegetables...you name it!"
"That's probably it," replied the dentist "Hollandaise sauce
is made with lemon juice, which is acidic and
highly corrosive. It seems as thought I'll have to install a
new plate, but made out of chrome this time."
"Why chrome?" the man asked.
"Well, everyone knows that there's no plate like chrome for
the Hollandaise!"

A man went to visit his doctor. "Doctor, my arm hurts bad.
Can you check it out please?", the man pleads.
The doctor rolls up the man's sleeve and suddenly hears
the arm talk.
"Hello Doctor," says the arm, "could you lend me twenty bucks
please? I'm desperate."
The doctor says, "Aha! I see the problem. Your arm is
broke!"

"Ever since we got married, my wife has tried to change me. She got me
to stop drinking, smoking and running around until all hours of the
night. She taught me how to dress well, enjoy the fine arts, gourmet
cooking, classical music, even how to invest in the stock market." I even lost 65 pounds!
"Sounds like you may be bitter because she changed you so
drastically," remarked his friend.
"I'm not bitter. Now that I'm so improved, she just isn't good enough
for me."

Trivia
Butter! No, Parkay! Butter is Better!
Butter is better no matter what the commercials try to tell you.
In fact, if eating butter caused coronary heart disease, then the
people of Udaipur, India would have all been dead years ago.
These people have the highest consumption rate of butter in the
world, but their rate of death from heart disease is almost
the same as ours here in America was at the turn of the century
which was close to zero.
Since that time our consumption of margarine has increased
dramatically, a total of 300%, and the rate and incidence of heart
disease has grown by 3500%. Coincidence, I don't think so.
Margarine, a nonfood, as I call it, is made up of vegetable oil.
And what's wrong with vegetable oil? Well, let me tell you some
facts about the dangers of that oil. Numerous studies have shown
that heated vegetable oil fed to animals caused hardening of the
arteries and breast cancer. In one such study, those animals fed
the heated oil developed tumors and all but one died within 40
months. The butter fed group had no tumors and lived a normal life.
One of the reasons we all consume so much margarine is because
it's cheap. In fact, the federal government who discourages the
consumption of butter, turns around and sells it to European
countries, who, by the way, have a lower incidence of heart disease.
They buy it from us for about 50 cents a pound, while you and I eat
the "imitation" stuff.
Butter is better and if you're still eating margarine, THROW IT OUT.
If you're concerned about calories or cholesterol, then just use
less of it. It seems here in America common sense is not always
the buzz word. Make this positive change, your heart will thank
you!!

Organic Foods Are Healthier!
As you learned in the first feature of this edition of The Mindell Report, the antioxidant nutrients found in
fresh fruits and vegetables explain a good deal of their well-established cancer-fighting powers. Unfortunately, conventionally-farmed versions of these foods are grown in a manner that depletes them of these nutrients-and recent research has pinpointed exactly why the kind of farming that's most widely used today has this effect on the foods we eat.
The study, published in the Journal of Agricultural Food Chemistry, found that pesticides and herbicides used to maintain conventional crops impair the plants' ability to produce phenolics. Phenolics (including the family of nutrients called bioflavonoids) are antioxidant compounds naturally made in plants for defense against insects and competition from other plants. When we eat foods rich in these substances, they give our bodies an antioxidant boost and help to prevent cancer and heart disease.
When plants are treated with herbicides and pesticides, they produce less phenolics. It's as though they somehow know that they don't need to devote their energies to producing these substances because of the protection they get from the synthetic chemicals.
Researchers compared antioxidant levels of organically and conventionally grown corn, Marionberries,
and strawberries. They also looked at antioxidant production in so-called sustainably grown crops,
which are fertilized but not treated with synthetic herbicides or pesticides. (According to this study,
fertilizers increase antioxidant production in plants.)
Organically and sustainably grown Marionberries had 50 percent higher antioxidant content than conventionally grown berries, while strawberries grown organically or sustainably had about 19 percent more antioxidants than conventional versions. The sustainably grown corn had 58.5 percent higher antioxidant content than conventionally grown corn. The research team concluded that the antioxidant gain achieved with organic and sustainable growing methods is enough to make a significant difference in people's health.

If you need to lose weight, you must be in caloric deficit. This can be accomplished by cutting down your caloric intake, or increasing the amount of calories you burn by exercising. I recommend both. Even though a calorie is a calorie when it comes to weight loss, a calorie is not a calorie when it comes to your health. Make sure your daily diet includes several servings of fruit and vegetables and whenever possible, avoid foods that contain trans fat.
