“Beware The Net Carb Trap”
Frank Barnhill, M.D.
The terms “net carbs”, “net effective
carbs”, and “impact carbs”
are causing some confusion about
how to count carbohydrates for
those of us on any one of a dozen
weight loss or diabetic diets.
With the growing popularity of
the Atkins Diet, South Beach Diet
and other low carb diets, it’s
very important that you understand
food package labeling.
Food manufacturers probably initially
created these “carb” terms
so they could be used as sales
marketing on the labels of “low
carbohydrate” protein nutrition
bars. With the current explosion
of interest in low carbohydrate
diets, unfortunately, this
labeling use has expanded to hundreds
of other foods and may lead
you to believe you are consuming
fewer carbs than you actually
are.
Here is the “skinny” on “net Carbs”:
Some products replace natural carbs
with more protein, higher fat
content, fiber, or alternate carbs
such as polyols and sugar
alcohols. Since most sugar alcohols
are only partly absorbed,
manufacturers may advise you to
ignore these ingredients and
treat them as if they are not absorbed.
In reality, sugar
alcohols provide about one half
the calories of regular sugar and
if you ignore these calories, you
may be going way off your diet.
Sugar alcohols are often added to
sweeten foods, provide bulk or
filler, and help retain moisture.
These “dietetic sugars” include
maltitol, mannitol, sorbital, xylitol,
isomalt, lactitol,
erythriol, glycerol or glycerin,
and hydrogenated starch
hydrolysates. While they do have
less of an effect on blood sugar
levels and total absorbed calories,
excessive amounts can cause
diarrhea, gas and bloating. If
you want to be accurate in your
carb counting, these must be counted
as 50% absorbed.
If fiber has been added to take
the place of calories you’re in
luck! The dietary fiber found in
most cereals and breads is not
always completely digested and
may not be absorbed unlike fruit
and vegetable fiber. If the “Nutrition
Facts Label” shows less
than five or six grams of dietary
fiber per serving, then you’re
probably getting few calories from
the fiber and can ignore it
when counting carbs. If the label
shows added fiber from fruits
and vegetables, then you are indeed
getting carbs from these
sources.
At this time, the terms; “net carbs”,
“impact carbs” and “net
effective carbs” have not received
U.S. Food and Drug
Administration approval and do
not generally provide an accurate
estimate of carbohydrate content.
Overall, the best and most reliable
source of information about
the “real carbs” contained within
a packaged food is found on the
back of the package and not the
advertising label on the front.
Look closely at the Nutrition Facts
label to determine the “real
carb count”! Happy dieting!!

Losing A Foot
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
A woman was not feeling well, so
she visited her doctor. The
good doctor, after giving her a
thorough examination, said
grimly, "Mrs Goode, I am sorry
to have to say this, but if you
want to get well again you would
have to lose a foot."
"What!?! You mean my foot has to be amputated?"
"Oh, no, no..." replied the good
doctor, "I mean you have to lose
a foot from around your waistline!"
-----
A man who owns a pharmacy showed
up at work one day around noon.
He saw a man leaning against the
wall outside with a grimace on
his face.
The owner asked his assistant manager
who the guy outside was.
The assistant said, "He came in
looking for cough medicine. I
could not find any, so I gave him
a bottle of laxative and told
him to drink it all."
The manager said, "You can't cure a cough with laxative!"
The assistant replied, "Sure you
can. Look at him, he's afraid to
cough!"
-----
Walter was sitting in the doctor's
office for his annual physical
going over a few fine points about
his health with his doctor.
The doctor said, "Your blood pressure
is a little high, you know
Walter, you need to watch your
diet and lose a little weight."
"But doc, I'm losing weight more and more each day."
"Oh really? How are you doing it?" asked the doctor.
"Well, just six weeks ago, I'd eat
lunch at 12:00 and have a
snack around 3:00. Just today I
had breakfast at 7:30, waited 2
hours, had a snack at 9:30 then
I waited an hour and a half and
ate lunch at 11:00, then I waited
45 minutes and had a snack
before coming here"
"And with this regiment you're losing weight?" asked the doctor.
"Yeah," Walter said excitedly. "More meals and less wait!"

Trivia
Although beavers live near rivers,
streams, and lakes, they do
not eat fish. Beavers eat only
plants. They eat poplar trees,
carrots, cattail, mushrooms, potatoes,
berries, water plants,
swamp wood, and fruit. Soft bark
is the main food for a beaver.

"The Benefits of Smoking"
by James Groves
This past weekend I received an
email from a potential subscriber
who wanted to know how to stop
smoking. I wrote him back and
asked "Why in the world would you
want to stop? There are many
health benefits from smoking that
have just been released in the
new research published by the JAMA
(Journal of American Medical
Association) of which I am a contributing
member."
These latest research findings are
going to cost our government
and we the taxpayers a small fortune.
It seems the federal and
the state governments will have
to refund all that money they won
in court and return it to the tobacco
companies.
Here were the findings:
1. Long term smokers
who quit required more doctor visits for
eye, ear and nose infections. It
seems one of the additives in
the pesticides that was sprayed
on the tobacco leaves is actually
a bacterial inhibitor for staphylococcal
infections.
2. In one blind study
2 out of every 10 people surveyed who
stop smoking were found to be more
susceptible to STDs.
3. Coughing actually strengthens
and exercises the lung and
heart muscle. For those who
stopped smoking there was a 40%
reduction in lung capacity within
the first 6 months.
With all this information in hand
I've decided to go back to
smoking. I have fond memories
of cruising the beach in my '57
Ford convertible with a pack of
cigarettes rolled up in my tee-
shirt sleeve, and a lit cigarette
in the other hand with ashes
flying back in my face and smoke
burning my eyes. Boy did the
girls think I was cool, you know
they weren't looking at the
car!
Those were the real good old days!
I didn't care about additives
that protected me from staphylococcal
infections, STD's (sexually
transmitted diseases), or exercising
my heart muscle. Well, they
must be right, I started coughing
the first night. Just think of
all the exercise my heart's getting
and now no more infections.
So let's all take up the torch
and start smoking.
APRIL FOOL - Enjoy good health and this ain't the way to do it!!

Dr. Earl Mindell's Wellness Update
==================================
Can you tell me the best way to eat to lose weight?
The best way to eat is to have small
portions of healthy foods
throughout the day. These small
portions should consist of
protein, fats, and complex carbohydrates.
Eating smaller meals
allows better digestion within
the body. Research was conducted
in England to show the effect of
eating smaller amounts more
frequently. The study found that
when people ate one sixth of
their food six times a day rather
than one third of their food
three times, the participants lost
weight, reduced their choleste
rol, and improved their glucose
tolerance pattern.
When smaller meals are eaten, there
is also a decrease in
appetite. Your body does not crave
food as much. Eating less
carbohydrates at one time, gives
you more glucose and insulin
control. This helps reduce the
risk for diabetes.
It’s important to reduce the amount
of food you eat during these
smaller meals. In order to lose
weight and become healthier, you
should not eat the same quantity
in 5 or 6 meals as you did for 3
meals. In addition, the quality
of the food you eat is important.
Eat a whole-foods diet that consists
of fruits, vegetables, and
multi-grains. I recommend you exercise
every day as well. This
will help you keep those unwanted
pounds off. Consult your
physician for an exercise program
that is right for you.

Stress Tips
by Dr. Rae Baum
You will find this "Stress Tip Message"
helpful to stay focused
and on purpose. You can put this
message to work by reading it
often throughout the day.
My motivation to modify my life
is rooted in my belief that I
have the ability to change.
Nothing in my life will change until
I begin to see and do things differently.

If you need to lose weight, you
must be in caloric deficit. This
can be accomplished by cutting
down your caloric intake, or
increasing the amount of calories
you burn by exercising. I
recommend both. Even though a calorie
is a calorie when it comes
to weight loss, a calorie is not
a calorie when it comes to your
health. Make sure your daily diet
includes several servings of
fruit and vegetables and whenever
possible, avoid foods that
contain trans fat.
