“How To Tell If Those Herbs You’re Taking
Are Really In The Bottle”
by Frank Barnhill, M.D.
Ok, the first thing we must admit
is that there are no guarantees
of purity, safety, and reliability
when it comes to herbal over
the counter products. Yes, it’s
probably true you have no
assurance of the quality of herbal
supplements, since herbal
manufacturers are not required
to follow FDA efficacy or safety
standards.
So, how can you at least get some
assurance that an herbal
supplement bottle contains what
is listed on the label?
The US Pharmacopeia Convention (www.usp.org)
keeps information
about manufacturers consistency
and safety procedures via its
Dietary Supplement Verification
Program.
If you don’t have the time to search
the USPC website, here are a
few rough guidelines to use in
selecting “good” over the counter
herbal products for your family.
The label will contain:
*the USPC or National Registry
Seal or Certificate
*the botanical name of the herb
is listed
*the words “Standardized Extract”
*the exact amount of the specific
“active” ingredient
*the dosage you should take in
milligrams
*an expiration date with a batch
or lot number
*the name and address of the manufacturer
Keeping these rough guidelines in
mind while choosing herbal
supplements may help you avoid
unwanted side effects and the
unpleasant experience of feeling
as if you wasted your money for
something that doesn’t work.
The most common side effects from
untested or impure herbal
supplements are headache, stomachache
with diarrhea or vomiting,
rapid heart rate, and blurry vision.
Of course you should stop
the supplement right away and notify
your doctor if these side
effects do occur!
Unfortunately, in the absence of
a regulatory system to assure
quality and reliability of herbal
over the counter drugs, you as
a consumer have no way of knowing
if the product you buy actually
contains what is on the label.
Here’s to your continued good health
and education about over the
counter medicines!

Heavy Drinking
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
What’s wrong, Doctor? You look puzzled.”
“I can’t figure out exactly what’s
wrong with you. I think it’s
the result of heavy drinking.”
“Well then, I’ll just come back when you’re sober.”
-----
This guy goes into a doctor's office.
The doctor says, "Oh, Mr.
Jones! We have the results of your
test. Do you want the bad news
first or the very bad news?" The
guy shrugs and says,
"Well I guess I'll have the bad news first."
"Well the bad news is , you have
24 hours to live," the doctor
replies. The man is distraught,
"24 hours to live? That's horrible!
What could be worse than
that? What's the VERY bad news?"
The doctor folds his hands and
sighs,
"The very bad news is...I've been
trying to contact you since
yesterday."
-----
A man goes to the doctor and says,
"Doc., everytime I drink
coffee, I get terrible pains in
my eye."
The doctor says, "Try taking the spoon out first."
-----
A man consults a therapist and states,
“Doc, I’m suicidal. What
should I do?”
The doctor replies, “Pay in advance.”

"An Ounce of Prevention is Worth
a Pound of Cure"
by James Groves
Beginning this month I'm going to
make some simple suggestions
and offer alternative remedies
for common health problems. Of
course, none of this is meant to
replace visits to your doctor,
but these simple ideas could save
you money and improve your
health, all at the same time.
If you have been experiencing angina,
then your body is telling
you that it's time to change your
diet and your lifestyle. Begin
with an increase in exercise, eliminate
smoking, and adopt a
calmer, gentler outlook on life.
You should include vitamin C and
lysine in your nutritional
supplement program. This
combination is an excellent way of
reducing arterial plaque. Also,
add Coenzyme Q10 to your daily
supplements. This amazing
nutrient has shown an ability to
improve cardiovascular functioning
and performance.
Eat fish at least twice per week
or use fish-oil supplements.
Studies have shown that EPA (eicosapentaenoic
acid) can reduce
blood pressure and help increase
circulation. The end result
could be a decrease in angina attacks.
Next month we'll continue with some
simple suggestions for those
who suffer from chronic fatigue.
These health tips can only be
found in Bob Osgoodby's “Your Best
Body Ever” Newsletter".

Dr. Earl Mindell's Wellness Update
==================================
Hidden Calories In Coffee Drinks And Smoothies
On a hot day, it's hard to resist
a chilly coffee drink or
smoothie—and why should you? Frozen
coffee drinks may not be all
that nutritious, but they cool
you off and help you stay alert
during long summer afternoons at
the office. Smoothies are
generally regarded as healthy because
they're made with fruit and
fruit juices.
Chai is made with tea, spices, and
milk, mostly healthy. But if
you have one of these sweet treats
pretty much daily, and you're
wondering why you seem to be gaining
weight or not losing weight
despite your best efforts, those
frozen treats might be to blame.
For example, Starbucks' Java Chip
Frappuccino packs a whopping
650 calories, 25 grams of fat,
and 99 grams of carbohydrates
(almost all sugar).
This amounts to about 1/3 of the
calories and slightly more than
1/3 of the fat a person on a 2,000
calori e/day diet is
recommended to consume—and there's
virtually no nutritive value
to the Frappuccino. It's empty
calories with caffeine on top.
According to an article published
in the Journal of the American
Dietetic Association, those who
regularly drink gourmet coffee
drinks take in an average of 200
extra calories and 32 grams of
sugar a day.
There are some less calorie-and
sugar-rich choices at your local
coffee joint. If you want to treat
yourself to a flavorful coffee
drink, ask for nutritional information
before you make your
selection. Some establishments
make this information readily
available.
What about fruit smoothies? These
vary dramatically in
nutritional value and calorie count.
Most smoothies are made with
lots of high-calorie, high-sugar
fruit juice concentrates and
sugary sherbet and frozen yogurt.
Many of them pack more than 500
calories per smoothie, mostly in
the form of refined
carbohydrates.
Making your own smoothies is the
best option. I like to make mine
with chilled plain or vanilla soymilk,
frozen berries
(blueberries, strawberries), and
frozen mango or peach, with a
dollop of plain yogurt and a couple
of scoops of soy or whey
protein powder. If you need extra
liquid, try some goji, orange,
or apple juice. A bit of greens
powder can boost your smoothie's
nutritional value even more.
For treats kids love, buy an ice
pop maker and freeze extra
smoothies for a healthy dessert.
If y ou want to get a smoothie
while you're out, try splitting
one with a friend.

What Is Glaucoma?
by Dr. Marc Grossman
Technically, glaucoma is a
disorder that results in damage to
the optic nerve, sometimes
as a result of increased pressure of
the aqueous humor, the clear
watery fluid that circulates in the
chamber of the eye between
the cornea and the lens. To
understand this fully, let's
first discuss what happens inside
the eye in glaucoma.
In the healthy eye, aqueous
humor is produced, and drained from
the eye into the bloodstream
at a constant rate so that you
always have a fresh supply
and always the right amount. The
drainage occurs through a
little opening (canal) between the
iris and the cornea.
Sometimes in certain people too
much aqueous humor is produced
and the eye can't get rid of it
fast enough to maintain what is
called normal intraocular pressure.
In other patients, the
drainage mechanism is faulty; the
fluid can't escape fast e nough
to keep pressure down to normal
levels. Either way, the
abnormally high pressure that results
is called intraocular
hypertension. This increased pressure
can damage the optic nerve,
first affecting side or peripheral
vision, leaving central or
straight ahead vision perfectly
normal. If this condition is left
untreated, central vision is affected
as well, and can eventually
result in blindness.
Medical treatment depends on the
nature and severity of each
case. Commonly, open angle glaucoma
is treated with eyedrops or
oral medications. In the event
this treatment does not lower the
eye pressure inside the eye, laser
therapy or surgery may be
necessary.
To complement your doctor’s protocol
for your glaucoma, one can
also help lower intraocular pressure
through regular exercise,
reducing stress, eating a healthy
diet, and taking specific
nutrients such as vitamin C, alpha
lipoic acid and coleus forsk
olii. Other nutrients such as taurine
and B12 can help protect
the optic nerve from damage.

If you need to lose weight, you
must be in caloric deficit. This
can be accomplished by cutting
down your caloric intake, or
increasing the amount of calories
you burn by exercising. I
recommend both. Even though a calorie
is a calorie when it comes
to weight loss, a calorie is not
a calorie when it comes to your
health. Make sure your daily diet
includes several servings of
fruit and vegetables and whenever
possible, avoid foods that
contain trans fat.
