“Beware The Net Carb Trap”
H.F. Barnhill, M.D.
The terms “net carbs”, “net effective
carbs”, and “impact carbs”
are causing some confusion about
how to count carbohydrates for
those of us on any one of a dozen
weight loss or diabetic diets.
With the growing popularity of
the Atkins Diet, South Beach Diet
and other low or modified carb
diets, it’s very important that
you understand food package labeling.
Food manufacturers probably initially
created these “carb” terms
so they could be used as sales
marketing on the labels of “low
carbohydrate” protein nutrition
bars. With the current explosion
of interest in low carbohydrate
diets, unfortunately, this
labeling use has expanded to hundreds
of other foods and may lead
you to believe you are consuming
fewer carbs than you actually
are.
Here is the “skinny” on “net Carbs”:
Some products replace natural carbs
with more protein, higher fat
content, fiber, or alternate carbs
such as polyols and sugar
alcohols. Since most sugar alcohols
are only partly absorbed,
manufacturers may advise you to
ignore these ingredients and
treat them as if they are not absorbed.
In reality, sugar
alcohols provide about one half
the calories of regular sugar and
if you ignore these calories, you
may be going way off your diet.
Sugar alcohols are often added to
sweeten foods, provide bulk or
filler, and help retain moisture.
These “dietetic sugars” include
maltitol, mannitol, sorbital, xylitol,
isomalt, lactitol,
erythriol, glycerol or glycerin,
and hydrogenated starch
hydrolysates. While they do have
less of an effect on blood sugar
levels and total absorbed calories,
excessive amounts can cause
diarrhea, gas and bloating. If
you want to be accurate in your
carb counting, these must be counted
as 50% absorbed.
If fiber has been added to take
the place of calories you’re in
luck! The dietary fiber found in
most cereals and breads is not
always completely digested and
may not be absorbed unlike fruit
and vegetable fiber. If the “Nutrition
Facts Label” shows less
than five or six grams of dietary
fiber per serving, then you’re
probably getting few calories from
the fiber and can ignore it
when counting carbs. If the label
shows added fiber from fruits
and vegetables, then you are indeed
getting carbs from these
sources.
At this time, the terms; “net carbs”,
“impact carbs” and “net
effective carbs” have not received
U.S. Food and Drug
Administration approval and do
not generally provide an accurate
estimate of carbohydrate content.
Overall, the best and most reliable
source of information about
the “real carbs” contained within
a packaged food is found on the
back of the package and not the
advertising label on the front.
Look closely at the Nutrition Facts
label to determine t he “real
carb count”! Happy dieting!!

Diet Buddies

Rosey and Nina were best of friends
and tried to do everything
together. Rosey announced that
she was going to start a diet to
lose some pounds she had put on
recently.
"Good," Nina exclaimed. "I'm ready
to start a diet too. We can be
dieting buddies and help each other
out. And when I feel the urge
to drive out and get a burger and
fries, I'll call you first."
"Great," Rosey replied. "I'll meet you at Burger King."

A mother takes her son to a psychiatrist
and says, "Doctor, I'd
like you to evaluate my 13 year-old
son."
"He's suffering from a transient
psychosis with an intermittent
rage disorder, punctuated by episodic
radical mood swings, but
his prognosis is good for full
recovery."
"How can you say all that without even meeting him?"
"Didn't you say he was 13?"

Doctors at a hospital in Brooklyn,
New York have gone on strike.
Hospital officials say they will
find out what the doctors'

At one Army base, the annual trip
to the rifle range had been
canceled for the second year in
a row, but the semi-annual
physical fitness test was still
on as planned.
One soldier mused, "Does it bother
anyone else that the Army
doesn't seem to care how well we
can shoot, but they are
extremely interested in how fast
we can run?"

"An Ounce of Prevention is Worth
a Pound of Cure"
by James Groves
This month I'm going to tackle the
subject of Chronic Fatigue.
For millions of Americans feeling
run-down and always tired is a
way of life. Doctors have
come to call these vague symptoms
Chronic Fatigue when actually it
is just one symptom of a serious
nutritional deficiency.
One of the primary causes of Chronic
Fatigue is the overuse of
prescription drugs. Be sure
you have discussed all the side
effects with your doctor or pharmacist.
If you're still not
sure, purchase a drug book and
look up all the side effects for
the drug you are taking.
Another major cause is the American
diet. We eat too many
sweets, and many of us are allergic
to common foods such as
peanut butter, white flour, milk,
and sugar. Alter your diet by
eliminating the common allergens
and then add them back to your
diet one at a time. If you
find that you are tired and run-down
after returning to eating certain
foods, then by all means have a
test for allergies. The cure
could be that simple.
Poor digestion is another cause
of Chronic Fatigue. This is
caused by a lack of stomach acids.
Use an enzyme product for
better digestion. Of course,
none of this is meant to replace
visits to your family physician,
but sometimes simple ideas can
save you money and improve your
health, all at the same time.
Next month we'll continue with more
about chronic fatigue. These
health tips can only be found in

Ever” Newsletter

Dr. Earl Mindell's Wellness Update
==================================
I’m a 23-year-old woman with a weight
problem. But the problem is
I can’t gain weight. I’m tired
of people criticizing me and I
don’t want to fill up on junk food
or sweets. What should I do?
First of all, thank your lucky stars
and your genes. As annoying
as the unwanted comments from others
about your weight may be, at
least you are not battling the
bulge like more than 44 million
Americans. That said - you are
on the right track when it comes
to avoiding empty calories from
processed foods. Here is what I
suggest you do to gain weight in
a healthy way:
- Be sure to eat 3 meals a day and
3 snacks between those meals.
In between meal snacks are
a great way to add calories. Try a
meal replacement shake that
is high in soy or whey protein,
bananas and dried fruit,
nuts and peanut butter, lowfat yogurt,
and lowfat granola bars.
-
Add more lowfat milk or
soy milk to your daily beverages
instead of filling up on
diet sodas and coffee, in addition to
drinking 8 - 10 glasses
of water every day.
- Even though you are trying to
gain weight, be sure you exercise
moderately for 30 minutes
most days so that your new weight
will turn into muscle instead
of fat.

Eye Secrets
by T.Z. Movsas, M.D.
Money-Saving Eyeglasses Secret: Order Polycarbonate Lenses
Very rarely does the optical store
ask your input as to the type
of lenses you would like for your
eyeglass frames. On the other
hand, almost always you are asked
if you would like to PAY EXTRA
for ultraviolet protection and
scratch resistance. Next time you
buy glasses, make sure you ask
for polycarbonate lenses.
Polycarbonate lenses are very impact
resistant, thinner and
lighter than most other plastic
eyeglass lenses and have
ultraviolet protection and scratch
resistance built in. In fact,
polycarbonate lenses are recommended
for all children's eyewear
and safety eyewear. If you
order polycarbonate lenses for your
eyeglasses or your children's eyeglasses,
do not pay extra for
scratch resistance and ultraviolet
protection. These extra
charges are just another way for
optical stores to increase the
selling price.

If you need to lose weight, you
must be in caloric deficit. This
can be accomplished by cutting
down your caloric intake, or
increasing the amount of calories
you burn by exercising. I
recommend both. Even though a calorie
is a calorie when it comes
to weight loss, a calorie is not
a calorie when it comes to your
health. Make sure your daily diet
includes several servings of
fruit and vegetables and whenever
possible, avoid foods that
contain trans fat.
