How to Avoid Post-Holiday Depression
Frank Barnhill, M.D.
Most of us are really emotionally charged for any holiday. After all, a holiday and time off or time spent with family and friends, is something to look forward to. We spend weeks and sometimes months getting ready for the event, only to have it last a short time and disappear abruptly. As a result, about 25% of s will suffer such a letdown, that depression will set in within a few days or even a week later. Here are a few suggestions to help you deal with post-holiday blues:
When you first feel the blues coming on, sit quietly for 20 to 30 minutes and think of all the good things that happened during the season. Write down a next years resolution list to help make sure those good things happen again. Remember all the things you did receive and don’t dwell on what you didn’t receive. Start next year’s gift list now. That will allow you to buy a few after Christmas bargains.
Make a call list and personally phone each person who gave you a gift. Thank them for the present and offer to help in some special way. Bake an “after New Year’s” cake or buy a special “It’s winter” food and give it to friends or family as a treat, sort of like the Kings cake at Mardi Gras.
Try to set up a “help the needy” winter fund and give assistance in January and February to those you helped during Christmas. Being needy is not limited to Christmas, yet that’s when we tend to think about helping others the most.
“Re-gift a present” you received to a needy person. It’s ok to give away presents you do not need. I don’t think it’s ok to sell them, but giving them to someone who can use them in January seems an ok thing to do.
Send out Happy New Year or “Have a great winter” cards to the very same persons you sent Christmas cards. Design your own “hope it snows” card. Start a birthday card list of friends and relatives and go ahead and prepare your cards for the next three months. Have them ready to mail and put them on the fridge.
Call an old friend. Pick one you haven’t spoken to in a long time and get acquainted again. Once you start talking, you’ll find you still have a lot more in common than you think.
Start having family meetings twice a month to discuss the good and the bad. Having everyone’s input will help take some of the stress of life off of you. Organize a contest at work for the best or worst piece of clothing received at Christmas and if worn to work, offer a prize.
Have a “hat party”. Everyone has to wear a hat to attend. Have a best hat and craziest hat award. Everyone will have more fun than you can imagine. Start planning your next vacation and send for all the information available. It pays to plan even for a weekend get away, as that gives you control over time will spent and helps make the trop much more enjoyable.
Rededicate you life or your family at church. Nothing makes us feel better than to have all those burdens lifted off of our shoulders. Set goals for what church work you and your family can do for the year.
Teach yourself a new way to pray. It doesn’t matter how old you are, most persons were never taught how to pray. Children were usually just taught “program prayers” and not how to pray form the heart. Most of us forget that prayer can be done at any time and for any reason. So, offer a prayer in thanks for all the good things you received and those who gave them. Have a Sunday school class party for “backsliders”. Invite all of your class, including those who have been missing more than a few Sundays. Schedule this at a convenient time during the week, so everyone can come or at least drop-in. You may also wish to invite prospective new members.
These are just a few ways to keep the blues away. The methods can be expanded and modified as you wish. And yes, I’m sure you can think of many others, now that I’ve gotten you started.
Have a great year!

A mother takes her son to a psychiatrist and says, "Doctor, I'd like you to evaluate my 13 year-old son."
"He's suffering from a transient psychosis with an intermittent rage disorder, punctuated by episodic radical mood swings, but his prognosis is good for full recovery."
"How can you say all that without even meeting him?"
"Didn't you say he was 13?"

Doctors at a hospital in Brooklyn, New York have gone on strike. Hospital officials say they will find out what the doctors' demands are as soon as they can get a pharmacist over there to read the picket signs!

Fresh out of high school, I found a job cleaning the elegant home of an older doctor. Among other duties, I had to dust their many imported carvings and petrified collectibles, as well as pick up after their pets.
One day, I was astonished to find two ivory fossils lying on the floor beside the bookcase. I quickly picked them up, and put them back on the shelf. The next week, the same thing happened.
That afternoon, the Doctor came
into the parlor, her faithful dog behind her. Looking around, she eyed
the bookcase. "Nya," she asked the dog, "how in the world do you keep getting
your bones up there?"

Avoid Fad Diets, Stick To Diets That Are Long Term
High Protein Diets
Not only are these diets high in
saturated fats, but according to the American Heart Association, they can
lead to heart
disease and cancer. They can also
worsen kidney or liver function in people with kidney or liver problems.
The Zone
It has not been proven that eating foods in certain combinations has any medical benefit. To your body food is food and a calorie is just a calorie.
Liquid Diets
Replacing food altogether will not teach you healthy eating behavior. But, meal replacement products do have great merit if used wisely and with a doctor's okay. They can be abused if used every day with no other meals. In other words, regardless of what liquid diet you use, you should have a balanced meal daily to give your body all the nutrients it needs to fuel you through your daily endeavors.
Fasting/Cleansing Diets
Of course you will lose weight if you drink nothing but juice for a few days! Not only is it an unrealistic long term eating plan, but it also lacks protein and other vital nutrients.
Food Myopia
Eating only one food or type of
foods is problematic for a number of reasons. It can lead to unpleasant
side effects, such as
gastrointestinal distress, and
nutritional imbalances. It's also boring, which is why it's very difficult
to stay on this type of diet
for any period of time.
Let your health be your criteria for success.
Focus on your health goals instead
of on the numbers on your scale. Do you feel stronger and more confident?
Do you feel
more energetic? Have you lowered
your BMI or cholesterol level? Keep your mind on the real benefits of healthy
weight
management: improved health and
well-being. After all, that is what Healthy Lifestyles Newsletter is all
about, right?
Finally.......Note: If you are clinically obese, sedentary, a female age 50+, or a male age 40+ please consult your doctor before starting any diet or exercise program.
That's it for this month, stay well and be healthy.

Fitness is an Attitude
by Helen Norse
During a catalogue search at my local library, I came across this title: "Fitness without Exercise - The Scientifically Proven Strategy for Achieving Maximum Health with Minimum Effort." This book by Bryant Stamford and Porter Shimer really misses the point. After all, fitness is more of an attitude than a destination.
I found another book title that has more to recommend it, and has a concept with which I whole-heartedly agree."Walking: the Pleasure Exercise," written by Mort Malkin. In fact, during the library catalogue search, under the search-word *fitness*, five out of the first twenty listings had the word *walking* in their titles. This makes sense.
Quite naturally, walking is the ideal starting place for creating your Fitness Attitude. First, it's low impact, and it uses your body's large muscles. Walking requires no special training or equipment. Actually, you're already expert at doing it, with a body that's been designed for the activity. Wonderful! You've got a perfect way to get started developing your Fitness Attitude: Enjoy a daily walk.
Now, I'll admit something here. Even though I highly value fitness, nutrition and good health, sometimes it really is an effort to put on my walking shoes and get out the door. Today was cold and rainy, for example. I had eaten a big lunch and wanted to get caught up on answering emails. It would have taken very little nudging to convince myself to stay indoors by the woodstove basking in the glow of my computer screen.
At a time like this, momentum helps. I feel weird when I have to miss my daily walk because over time it's become a part of my life. It easier to walk consistently when you make it a routine, or you have a ritual to help you get out the door. A routine will also to carry you along. Decide on a length of time for your walk, rather than setting a distance. Then, go! Some routes will become your standards, and then you won't have to plan - which is one of the benefits of a routine. Used appropriately, routines free your thoughts, so you can contemplate topics more interesting than whether to make a right or left turn at the corner.
Good for you, if you use a treadmill, gym, or other walking strategy such as mall walks. Still, if you can possibly make arrangements, spend at least some of your walking time outside. Time in the open air is part of fitness as an attitude.
There is also question of diet as it relates to the Fitness Attitude. Usually, by eating foods that are basically natural, (such as salads that aren't smothered with an oily dressing, or a stir-fry of vegetables that aren't drowned by a sugar sauce), you won't crave un-foods like my personal demon: licorice twists. Still, in our current fast-paced culture, it's inevitable that with the easy portability and attractive packaging of 'snack' foods, plus their availability everywhere~ there will be times when you eat junk. What's different when you have your Fitness Attitude is that you automatically don't include processed 'foods' as a staple in your diet.
If you put a little bit of attention on fitness, very soon your life will naturally include the pleasure of a daily walk and a desire for whole foods that nourish you. Having a Fitness Attitude is not hard, and you feel better. You simply do.

If you need to lose weight, you
must be in caloric deficit. This can be accomplished by cutting down your
caloric intake, or
increasing the amount of calories
you burn by exercising. I recommend both. Even though a calorie is a calorie
when it comes to weight loss, a calorie is not a calorie when it comes
to your health. Make sure your daily diet includes several servings of
fruit and vegetables and whenever possible, avoid foods that contain trans
fat.
Be nice to your kids. They'll choose your nursing home.
