Warning Signs That You Need to
Find a New Doctor to
Treat ADHD or Behavioral Traits
by Frank Barnhill M.D.
Over the years, I have been fortunate to have treated several thousand kids and adults with ADHD, behavioral traits, and sudden as well as long term emotional problems. I always ask about any treatment they received before seeing me, get an idea of how that therapy was done and how well it worked. As a result, I’ve accumulated a “list of warning signs” that seem to indicate the previous doctor, therapist or counselor needed more education in treating the patients problem.
I’ve decided to share that list with you, as I have with my own patients during the course of their therapy. So, with no further explanation, here goes!
You should find a new doctor/therapist/counselor/psychologist to treat ADHD if:
1. Your doctor tells you the only way to treat the problem is with drugs. Likewise, if he or she says a team approach is unnecessary or behavioral training isn’t needed, just walk out of the office.
2. You notice he or she only talks to you and not “his patient” when asking how the child or family member is doing. We call this veterinary medicine. How can they know what is really going on inside someone’s head without asking that someone?
3. You try to give him input from schoolteachers, friends, other relatives, outside counselors, and siblings, but it dismisses or downplays the importance.
4. You tell your therapist or doctor how ADHD or the behavioral problem is disrupting your family, and he assures you that things will get better after your child responds to treatment. This is a real biggie now days. I’ve seen several marriages fall apart because an ADHD child caused so much family conflict that everyone jumped ship. ADHD is a family problem. It affects the entire family unit and therefore everyone in the family must be involved in treatment if it is to be effective!
5. If all the information he gives you about ADHD or other behavioral problems is printed in pharmaceutical company handouts. A lot of patients have told me how their previous doctor just handed them a drug company brochure and told them “This will tell you everything you need to know.”
6. Your doctor hands you a drug company brochure, then proceeds to prescribe that particular drug, with the remark, “This is the drug of choice and we really don’t need to discuss any other medicines.”
7. Your doctor or counselor indicates that ADHD and behavioral problems are really just indicators of laziness, stubbornness, poor discipline, “just being a boy”, or “girls tend to be like that”.
8. Your doctor tells you not to establish a routine of firm, uniform, fair discipline for yourself and the entire family. Remember, discipline is taught by example and “seeing is believing”. If you don’t have the discipline it takes to keep appointments, be somewhere on time with all you need to do a job or stick to a diet and take your medication, then you can’t expect your ADHD’er to do the same. ADHD kids have very sharp observation skills and put up on these things in a heartbeat. (They also have very long memories!)
9. Your doctor doesn’t look for other causes of hyperactivity before starting, or at least while starting drugs and other treatment. You might want to look at our article: “When it’s not ADHD, What is it, a Zebra?” to get an idea of other diseases that can mimic ADHD, depression, anxiety and general behavior disorders.
10. Your doctor avoids discussing his ADHD or behavioral medicine training. Reading about ADHD out of a book is a lot different that actually having classroom and patient contact training.
11. The doctor tells you that this medicine will cure your ADHD problem. At this point, you should grab all and run to your car! This doctor probably has no training in ADHD or behavioral medicine.
Well, 10 discussion points usually seems to be the magic number, but as you can see, I cheated and included 11. I’m always updating this list, so if you have any comments, please drop me a line: drfrank@drhuggiebear.com .
We appreciate all the help we can get in giving you the resource material to make someone’s life an absolute success.
Just remember the most important axiom: “In order for any therapy to be successful, you must have confidence and trust in the one rendering the treatment!”

Fallacies - Setting Them Straight
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
It's time for some of our world-renowned fallacies. You can get trivia anywhere, but only Dribbleglass.com sets the record straight about popular widely held misconceptions and misinformation.
* No witches were burned during the Salem Trials of 1692. All the victims were hanged, except for one man, who was pressed to death with stones.
* You might be surprised to learn that there are more pyramids in Mexico than Egypt.
* "Seinfeld" wasn't Jerry Seinfeld's first sitcom. He played the governor's speechwriter on "Benson," but was fired after three episodes.
* Play-Doh wasn't originally intended to be a toy. It was created to clean wallpaper.
* "The Man in the Iron Mask" didn't wear an iron mask —- it was made of black velvet stiffened with whalebone and fastened behind the head with a padlock or steel springs.
* Brides do not walk down the aisle of a church during a wedding. The center section, or passage, of a church is correctly called a "nave."
* "Mrs." is not an abbreviation for "missus" as is often believed. "Mrs." is short for "mistress," the feminine form of "mister," which in turn originally meant "master." For obvious reasons, "Mrs." is no longer spelled out.
* No sailor would use the term "knots per hour." Knots are a measurement of speed — one nautical mile per hour.
* Saturn isn't the only planet in
our solar system with a ring. In fact, the only planet without a ring is
Earth.
(Correction: Earth is one of the
five planets in our solar system without a ring. There are rings around
Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. There are no rings around Mercury,
Venus, Earth, Mars, and Pluto.)
* Harpo Marx was fully capable of speaking.
* You might not think so, but lemons contain more sugar than strawberries.

I believe my daughter wants a pair of glasses. I don't know why she does. Perhaps glasses are now "cool" to have in school? But though she sees just fine, she still says she needs glasses.
I took her to the eye doctor just to check it out though. She was asked to read the bottom row of letters on the eye chart.
She said, "All right, I can see the 'O' and the 'P' and the 'T,' but not the 'N' and the 'Z.'"
-----
While my friend was working as a receptionist for an eye surgeon, a very angry woman stormed up to her desk.. "Someone stole my wig while I was having surgery yesterday," she complained.
The doctor came out and tried to calm her down. "I assure you that no one on my staff would have done such a thing," he said. "Why do you think it was taken here?"
"After the operation, I noticed the wig I was wearing was cheap-looking and ugly."
"I think" explained the surgeon
gently, "that means your cataract operation was a success."
Are you unhappy with the way you look? Would you like to loose weight? Are you interested in toning-up or increasing your muscularity? Would you like to improve your health and quality of life? Trivia
Poison ivy is not really poisonous. It contains highly allergenic oil called urushoil. Coming in contact with it causes contact dermatitis (itchy, painful skin). The oil travels well in smoke and can cause serious medical problems if it gets in the throat and lungs.

How To Be Healthy With The Common Sense Approach
Every one today realizes the importance of being healthy. Every one today also understands the need to be healthy. Does every one today know how and what is health, or how to be healthy? No, not every one does, nor do some people care. We sometimes think we are invincible. We are not!
This article may sound unimportant, but, YOU SHOULD READ THIS. What we will be talking about today, could be you. What we will discuss today can go unnoticed in all of us. These topics can go far and wide in content. The goal of our newsletter is to always offer ways to access total health and once you have achieved that, then our ultimate goal is to help you maintain your health and keep it in check.
Today, we are going to focus on a topic that really seems to be so badly overlooked. That is the daily skipping of meals. Why is this so important? Easy, your body is used to being replenished every day with vital and very necessary nutrients. These include, minerals, trace minerals, food supplements, vitamins, protein, sugar. The list does go on and on.
Skipping any meals, especially your breakfast, which happens to be the most important meal of your day, sends your body looking for nutrients elsewhere. Where you say? From you, your innards, your muscles, tissues and anywhere your body can absorb it. In other words, when you skip a meal, your body will take what it needs from your muscle and tissues. This will weaken your entire system. Once this continues on a regular basis, you will feel the ramifications.
The key to maintaining your health is to eat well balanced meals everyday. Let me ask you this simple question. What would happen to the cows that pasture on our farmlands if there were no grasslands for them to eat? Easy question, right? Of course, they would die. If their pastures are sparse, they can't eat when they need to eat, and they too will suffer from malnutrition just like we would by skipping meals all the time.
Just like your car, if you run out of gas, your car will not drive any further. What if you gave it an inferior fuel. Would it run the same? No, we all know that. What is being said here, is to make sure you eat your 3 or 4 meals a day, is make sure you get all the nutrients you need from those 3 or 4 meals each day.
How? The four basic food groups, protein, fats, carbohydrates, and fiber. Keep thinking of inferior fuel for your car and what happens. We all know what happens if we put a lower octane fuel in our vehicles when we are supposed to only put the required octane in our vehicles, right? The vehicle will not run as it is guaranteed to run. The same goes for our anatomy. Giving your body a lower octane or no octane will drive your body to the point that you too will not run properly.
Now, you might think I am stretching
this point a little too far? NO, not really. Malnutrition is not to be
taken lightly. There are many forms of malnutrition. Health institutes
all over the world can't stress enough the importance of eating healthfully.
Millions
of Americans have malnutrition
and are not even aware of it.
To have malnutrition, you don't have to have a swollen or protruding stomach or abdomen. Just by skipping meals when your in a rush, or just to lazy to make a good healthy meal is only the beginning of malnutrition.
Anyone who skips meals on a regular basis and chalks it up as, "I was late for a meeting, or I was too much in a hurry to make lunch, breakfast, or dinner," is on their way before they realize what has transpired, into the ugly and unhealthy world of malnutrition. This is true!
This is no joke!
That's it for this month, stay well and be healthy.

Eating for Health, Happiness and Successful Weight
Control
By Dr. William Parsons
Don't diet, just eat and lose weight!
First, the following "diet" is really not a diet, in the conventional sense, but a natural way of eating. It allows one to eat essentially anything one wishes, while attaining weight loss or weight control goals and consuming the necessary nutrients for a long and healthful life. The term "diet" implies restrictions by either eliminating or radically reducing the intake of certain foods or food groups. Most diets are inappropriate, unhealthful (some are even dangerous) and ultimately doomed to fail.
The most important objective of eating any food is to provide the body with all the essential nutrients for a long and healthful life. Almost every food provides some element needed by your body. If you do not care about being healthy, avoiding sickness and disease and living a long life, then this natural way of eating is not for you. The second most important reason for eating any food is because you enjoy it and it makes you happy. It is highly unlikely that you will consistently, and for long term, eat foods that you do not enjoy. Similarly, it is extremely unlikely that you will be able to completely eliminate foods that you do enjoy from your diet.
Many diets and dieticians expect a person to continually keep count of every calorie, carbohydrate and/or gram of fat that enters your mouth! Again, what is likelihood of being able to maintain this tedious ritual for any meaningful length of time? Nothing could be more depressing and stress-inducing as the constant monitoring of calories, carbs or fat. Therefore, if enjoying your meals is not important to you, then this natural way of eating is probably not for you.
Finally, you should eat food to maintain an appropriate weight for your height and frame. Being over-weight or under-weight is not conducive to a long, healthful life nor does it promote a positive self image. If being too heavy or too thin is not important to you, than this natural way of eating may not be for you.
Tips for Successful Weight Control
Lose or gain weight because you want to and not to please others. Otherwise, you will not be sufficiently motivated to change your bad eating habits. In fact, when the inevitable happens and you fail to achieve you goal, it will reinforce and, most probably, escalate the inappropriate behavior (i.e. over-eating, exclusively eating junk food, bulimia, etc.)
You must begin this natural way of eating with a positive outlook and the belief that you can achieve your goals with a minimal amount of effort. If you lack the self-confidence and motivation, or you do not believe that you can lose or gain weight, you will not!
It is extremely important for you to learn about the nutrients contained in the foods you eat. This is the only part of this natural way of eating that requires some effort on your part. The only way to accomplish this is to read. The internet is probably the best and easiest venue for obtaining this type of information. The following are excellent sources of health and nutrition-related information:
1) Medline Plus - http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/foodnutritionandmetabolism.html
2) Food and Nutrition Information Center - http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/
3) McKinley Health Center - http://www.mckinley.uiuc.edu/
4) USDA Nutrient Data Laboratory - http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/
Remember, the key to weight control is to be healthy, happy and fit. You must understand which foods will provide these three, all-important elements. Believe it or not, there are foods which you enjoy that are actually good for you!
Incredibly, many overweight people actually do not eat enough! Listen to your body, not your mind. Your body knows when it has had the appropriate amount of food and, more importantly, the appropriate amount of nutrition. Because many people do not understand nutrition, they eat food that does not supply sufficient nutrients to the body. They will feel hungry even after a large meal because theirs bodies are "starving" for proper nutrition. For this reason, most diets do not work or the individual cannot stay with the diet because it is an unnatural way of eating. Your body literally believes it is starving; therefore, it will take actions to survive the famine. It is a self-preservation mechanism, if you will. The body begins drawing off your muscles and stores the fat for later use in the event that it does not receive the necessary nourishment for an extended period of time. When a person finally falls off the diet (which is inevitable), they gain back all the lost weight and, in many cases, even more! The reason is because it takes the body sometime to adjust from its self-preservation mode, so all the food that is consumed is stored as fat while your body continues to draw from muscle.
There is no such thing as losing weight fast. It will take 3 to 6 months (or more depending on the amount of weight loss needed),to lose a significant amount of weight. The good news is that once you have lost the weight, you should not gain it back because you will have learned about the food you eat.
Yes, you have heard it before and you are now going to hear it again - exercise! Even a small amount of exercise (1/2 hour per day, 3 days per week) will greatly accelerate weight control.
If you feel like having a snack or something sweet, have it. Your body is telling you it needs something. Of course, it would be better to eat a piece of fruit rather than a candy bar. However, either is preferable to over-eating at your next meal or agonizing over the decision to indulge the urge.

If you need to lose weight, you
must be in caloric deficit. This can be accomplished by cutting down your
caloric intake, or
increasing the amount of calories
you burn by exercising. I recommend both. Even though a calorie is a calorie
when it comes to weight loss, a calorie is not a calorie when it comes
to your health. Make sure your daily diet includes several servings of
fruit and vegetables and whenever possible, avoid foods that contain trans
fat.
Be nice to your kids. They'll choose your nursing home.
