Antioxidants
by Dr. David Enders
Biological oxidation involves transferring electrons from one oxygen molecule to another. Sometimes an electron escapes. When this happens the “free” electron is called a free radical. Free radicals constantly form almost everywhere in the body at an astonishing rate. Free radicals can be enemies or friends. Our body’s internal environment must interact with them the right way, or they can cause serious damage. The key is to maintain the optimal balance between free radicals and antioxidants.
Antioxidants are a group of compounds that are produced by the body, or occur naturally in many plants. Antioxidants are the free radical police of the body, on call 24/7. Antioxidants protect us from the oxidative stress caused by free radicals.
Populations that consume large amounts of fresh fruits and vegetables, tea, and red wine enjoy increased longevity and decreased risk of serious diseases. Scientific literature suggests that dietary supplementation with single nutrients may not be beneficial, but that whole food supplements that contain a naturally occurring blend of nutrients is preferred. The literature has documented that the interaction of combined nutrients can produce a total effect that is synergistic. The effects of the blend are greater than the sum of the effects of individual nutrient.
Australian Bush Plum – is a small deciduous tree found in Northwestern Australia. During the wet season the plant produces small plum like fruits that look and taste like gooseberries.
Nutrient analysis indicate that the fruit contains small amounts of vitamin B1 and B2; it also contains sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron, zinc, copper, and phosphorus. With the average vitamin C content of 3.0 – 3.5% (range= .2 to 5.9%) the bush plum provides the most concentrated natural source of vitamin C known. The typical bush plum contains about 2907 mg vitamin C per 100 grams of edible fruit.
Grape Skin Extract – Recognition that whole food extracts contain a full complement of naturally occurring phytonutrients stimulated studies of grape skin extracts. Resveratrol and Quercetin are the most extensively researched grape skin phytonutrients.
Resveratrol – Scientific studies
indicate that resveratrol has a wide range of potentially important physiological
activities. It can function as:
• a potent antioxidant
• an inhibitor of tumor initiation,
promotion, and progression
• an inhibitor of cycloxygenase,
a tumor promoting enzyme
• an anti-inflammatory agent
• a phytoestrogen
Quercetin – The biological effects of quercetin and its derivatives have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which help protect against many different diseases. Studies suggest that quercetin and its derivatives protect low-density lipoproteins from oxidation, thus preventing atherosclerotic plaque formation. By inhibiting platelet aggregation and promoting vascular smooth muscle relaxation, these flavonoids also may prevent stroke, hypertension, and other damaging cardiovascular events. In addition, they have anti-viral and anti-cancer actions as well.
The preponderance of scientific evidence indicates that a diet rich in flavonoids supports good health. Because many people consume insufficient amounts of flavonoid rich foods, and because cooking causes significant losses of flavonoids (35-82%), supplementation seems appropriate.
Green Tea Extract – The health benefits of green tea have been recognized for centuries, and scientific studies have confirmed the benefits of drinking this popular beverage. Both in vitro and animal studies suggest green tea and green tea extracts elicit a broad range of health promoting effects, particularly in supporting cardiovascular health and protecting against infections and cancer. Current studies indicate that a daily tea intake of 6 – 10 cups is required to obtain benefits. Because it may be difficult for many of us to drink so much tea every day, supplementing with tea extracts makes sense.
Glutathione is produced by our bodies and is the key antioxidant. It protects us from many types of pollution. It protects our DNA and RNA from free radical damage. Glutathione also protects us against cellular damage caused by heavy metals, cigarette smoke, pesticides, benzene, solvents, dyes, phenols, nitrates, and smog.
According to a study done at the University of California glutathione is poorly absorbed when taken orally. Therefore our diet, or taking a glutathione supplement, cannot provide us with sufficient quantity. So how do we get it? A glyconutrient complex has been scientifically shown to increase glutathione levels in healthy tissue. It will increase glutathione levels by 50% when tissues have been subjected to direct toxic chemical assault.
This fact was demonstrated in a study done by three different laboratories simultaneously, each being unaware of what the other labs were doing. The final result clearly demonstrated that this glyconutrient complex raises glutathione – not just in healthy tissue, but also in response to a toxic chemical assault.
It is apparent that supplementation with single nutrients may not suffice, and that whole food extracts containing a variety of naturally occurring nutrients are preferred. Independent studies have shown that a synergistic combination of the above ingredients results in a 36% increase in serum antioxidant activity.

“Heat Stroke and heat related
illnesses”
by Frank Barnhill, M.D.
About 400 to 500 heat stroke victims die per year and thousands have continuing medical problems after such a near disaster.
Heat stroke is just one of four heat related illnesses caused by failure of our bodies to get rid of heat faster than we make it or absorb it. The human body normally effectively gets rid of excess heat by sweating and evaporation to carry heat off in the surrounding air decreasing central body temperature.
Heat cramps usually occur in the arms, legs, or lower abdomen and are the mildest of the four disorders resulting from mild dehydration and loss of body sodium. Older persons on diuretics or fluid pills are particularly prone to this condition. Replacing lots of water and using sodium containing drinks and letting the affected person rest in cooler surroundings will usually lead to a rapid recovery.
Heat syncope (passing out, faintness, dizziness) is the second most serious heat related illness and occurs as heat cramps are ignored and untreated in really hot situations or with very strenuous exercise or work. Dizziness and fainting occurs because dehydration makes it difficult for your body to maintain normal blood pressures, blood flow to your brain and provide excess skin blood flow at the same time!
Heat syncope is best treated by letting the person lie down, not sit, and giving cool oral re-hydration in a cool environment. However, if they are unconscious, you should seek medical attention immediately!
Heat exhaustion occurs when your body loses large amounts of water and salt through perspiration and is the third most serious of the heat-associated disorders. Heat exhaustion commonly occurs with very strenuous physical labor, but can occur in inactive persons on low salt diets and diuretics.
Heat exhaustion is associated with all of the above-mentioned symptoms plus profuse hot sweating, headache, blurry vision, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, chills, muscle weakness, skin flushing, extreme thirst, irritability, agitation, and sometimes loss of consciousness and rarely seizures. Core body temperatures in heat prostration rarely go above 103 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit.
Though rarely life threatening, heat exhaustion requires immediate first aid type attention as it may progress to heat stroke. The very same treatment used in heat syncope will often work, but if the affected person becomes confused, passes out, has difficulty breathing, starts vomiting, or has a seizure, you must seek emergency medical attention immediately! It may help to remove about half of the person’s clothing to assist in evaporation of sweat.
Heat stroke is of course the worse of the heat related illnesses and is a true life-threatening medical emergency.
Persons suffering from heat stroke have very high body temperatures, often in the 104 to 109 degree range, but when touched, will have a hot, dry skin. Other symptoms include sudden shortness of breath, seizures, decreased urination and sometimes blood in the urine, unconsciousness followed by coma, and if untreated, death. You must call 911 immediately to save this person’s life.
While waiting for an ambulance, remove all clothing, spray the person with cool water, place ice packs on the neck, wrists, ankles and groin, armpits, and if conscious and not vomiting or delirious, give cool liquids to drink.
So, what can you do to keep from developing heat related illnesses?
Drink lots of water on hot days. Listen to the weatherman and avoid being outside or in direct sun at the hottest times of the day. If you don’t have air conditioning, use fans to cool and move air to help with perspiration evaporation or go to an air-conditioned store or mall during the hottest parts of the day. Avoid caffeine and alcohol. Both alter the way your body provides blood flow to the skin allowing sweating and evaporation of heat. Wear light colored, lightweight clothing such as cotton when exposed to excessively hot temperatures or when you plan to be outdoors for more than 30 minutes. Talk to your doctor about your medications and what you should do about water, salt containing sports drinks and exercise or exertion in heat. When standing in hot conditions for long periods, such as watching sports events or a parade, avoid sudden exertion, drink water as you watch, wear a hat and if you get too hot, spray your skin with water, loosen clothing or go inside to cooler temperatures. Wet clothing does not provide as much heat loss as wet skin from which water may evaporate! Know your work-play heat related limits. Plan for rest and cool off times when working in the yard or during exercise and recreation. Go slowly at whatever you plan to do in hot environments. Acclimation occurs as a person slowly gets used to being in the heat.
Hopefully these tips and items of knowledge will help you protect yourself and family from the disasters known as heat related illnesses. Dr. Frank

Whenever my aunt went to the doctor, she would complain to me about the long delay she always endured. One day, when my aunt's name was finally called, she was asked to step on the scale. "I need to get your weight today," said the nurse.
Without a moment's hesitation, my
aunt replied, "One hour and 45 minutes!"

There was this city doctor who started a practice in the countryside. He once had to go to a farm to attend to a sick farmer who lived there. After a few house calls he stopped coming to the farm.
The puzzled farmer finally phoned him to ask whats the matter, didn't he like him or somethin'.
The doctor said, "No, its your ducks at the entrance...every time I enter the farm, they verbally insult me!"
-----
The patient awakened after the operation to find herself in a room with all the blinds drawn.
"Why are all the blinds closed?" she asked her doctor.
"Well," the surgeon responded, "They're fighting a huge fire across the street, and we didn't want you to wake up and think the operation had failed."

Can You Really Trust The Labels
On Foods?
by James Grove
In the past few months or so we have talked about how deceiving food manufacturers labels are to all of us. This week, we are going to give you a much better idea on what some of the labels are really telling you. We hope this article will help clear up some of the confusion that they have caused. Now, when looking at those labels, you will have a much better idea on how to avoid those products that will put a curse on your health and your weight loss goals.
Think you know your way around the "nutrition labels" on your favorite foods? Think again. "Reduced fat" doesn't mean "low fat" and that Nutrition Facts labels, can be a mine field.
Here are some guidelines to follow:
Fat Free: Less than 50 grams of fat per serving.
Low Fat: Three grams or less of fat per serving; if the serving is 30 grams or two tablespoons or less, 50 grams of the food can't exceed three grams of fat.
Reduced or less fat: At least 25% less fat per serving than the standard version of the product or an average of the market leaders.
Calorie-Free: Less than five calories per serving.
Low Calorie: Forty calories or less per serving; if the serving is 30 grams or less or two tablespoons or less, 50 grams of the food can't exceed 40 calories.
Reduced or fewer calories: At least 25% fewer calories per serving than the standard version of the product or an average of the market leaders.
Light or Lite: One-third fewer calories or half the fat of the standard version of the product or an average of the market leaders. (If 50% or more of the food's calories come from fat, the reduction must be 50% of the fat.)
WANT TO TEST YOUR LABEL SAVVY?
1. What's the first number you should check on the nutrition facts label?
2. The easiest way to gauge a food's fat content is to check:
a. Total fat
b. Cholesterol
c. Calories from fat
d. All of the above
4. After calories, from fat, the next numbers you should scan are total carbohydrates and protein. True or False?
HERE ARE THE ANSWERS
1. Answer = Serving size - If you eat more, you'll have to adjust the rest of the numbers. Watch for unrealistic servings. One food makers say's its muffin feeds two people.
2. Answer = C - If fat calories are more than a third of the total calories, you may want to pass on them.
3. Answer = False - experts suggest 2,000 calories for an active, 132 pound woman. Most Americans eat more.
4. Answer = False - To cut your cancer and heart disease risks, check fiber and saturated fat next. The healthiest meals keep saturated fat under seven grams; snacks, two grams. And try to choose foods with at least two grams of fiber.
That's it for this month and we wish you the best of health always,
Caloric Deficit
by Dr. Earl Mindell
If you need to lose weight, you must be in caloric deficit. This can be accomplished by cutting down your caloric intake, or increasing the amount of calories you burn by exercising. I recommend both. Even though a calorie is a calorie when it comes to weight loss, a calorie is not a calorie when it comes to your health. Make sure your daily diet includes several servings of fruit and vegetables and whenever possible, avoid foods that contain trans fat.
Put down that diet soda and sugar-free treat! Chances are good that they have been sweetened with the artificial sweetener, aspartame. While aspartame was finally approved by the FDA for use in dry foods in 1981 after a number of unsuccessful attempts, as early as 1971 the scientific community recognized it as a neurotoxin, or a chemical that kills brain cells and other cells in the nervous system. While the dangers of aspartame are widely known, however, food and beverage companies continue to use it rather than replace it with a natural sweetener. With all of the research available, it appears this industry is knowingly allowing aspartame to cause slow, silent damage throughout the United States.
While industry sponsored studies reveal that no harmful effects can be linked to aspartame, 92 percent of 90 independent studies conducted have discovered dangers in the use of aspartame. Perhaps the most frightening fact in the debate over aspartame is that methanol makes up 10 percent of the chemical. Also known as wood alcohol or wood poison, Methanol is incredibly harmful as it breaks down into formic acid and formaldehyde, a recognized deadly neurotoxin. While visual effects of aspartame include: headache, dizziness, memory loss, convulsion, seizures, slurred speech, and hyperactivity; more serious, hidden effects of the drug include: brain tumors, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, chronic fatigue, Parkinson's Disease, and Alzheimer's Disease. With the tremendous risk involved in using aspartame, it must have tremendous effects, right? Wrong. In fact, aspartame fails to be an effective aid in cutting calories because an individual will simply find them elsewhere.
I know that many of you are seeking low calorie diets and I do advocate the importance of them, but aspartame is not the answer. Instead of aspartame, I suggest that you use products containing maltitiol, an artificial sweetener derived from corn that is absorbed more slowly than sugar, or stevia, a completely natural, flavor enhancer. They'll give you the sweetness you want and the healthy diet you need.
Stay Healthy,
Dr. Earl Mindell
