Fish, Your Vision, and Macular Degeneration
Frank Barnhill M.D.
As we age, certain changes occur
in our eyes that may have
negative effects on our vision.
As we get older, most of us will
notice we’re getting a little more
farsighted and have to hold
the newspaper further away to read
it or just can’t focus up
close as when we were younger.
This condition is called
presbyopia and occurs due to a
natural change in the shape of the
lenses or focusing parts in our
eyes. Rarely does this cause any
problem other than having to change
glasses prescription every
couple of years.
Unfortunately, another condition
of aging called age related
macular degeneration (AMD), can
cause blindness due to
destruction of the part of the
eye responsible for collecting
most of the images of what we see.
AMD is not easily treated and
the res ulting blindness is usually
permanent. Even early in the
disease, most affected people can
no longer drive, may have
problems reading, and as the disease
progresses they may develop
total loss of vision.
In an on going study of almost 5000
patients ages 50 to 80, the
“Age Related Eye Disease Study”
(AREDS), there also appears to be
an association between the presence
and severity of AMD and
development of heart and vascular
diseases. It seems that persons
who develop AMD have a higher risk
of heart attacks, strokes and
complications of small blood vessel
diseases.
Now, the good news is … Data obtained
from the AREDS study also
shows that eating fish more than
once a week is associated with
about a 36% decrease in the risk
of developing vascular age
related macular degeneration. Participant’s
diets were studied
and found to be high in the Omega-3
fatty acids found in fish and
other marine foods. On the average,
they were eating two or more
meals of broiled or baked fish
and seafood products per week.
Participants in this study also
took daily dietary supplements
that included high levels of the
anti-oxidant vitamins C, E,
beta-carotene, as well as the minerals
zinc and copper.
Interestingly, taking zinc alone
decreased the risk of AMD by
almost 2 7%. Due to concerns about
lung cancer and the use of
beta-carotene in smokers, some
persons elected to eliminate that
supplement and thus had a slightly
higher overall risk.
In contrast, participants who consumed
large amounts of red meat,
which is high in Omega-6-arachadonic
acid fatty acids, had a 54 %
increase in risk of developing
vascular AMD when compared to
those that ate little red meat
and large amounts of fish. These
person’s diets were also more likely
to be lacking fish, zinc and
the anti-oxidant vitamins.
Omega-3 fatty acids are available
over the counter in fish oil
gel-caps for those who don’t have
the taste for fish. It is
always wise to buy a high quality
brand as some fish oil products
contain little of these beneficial
fatty acids and a lot of o
ther components from fish that
may not be beneficial.
The lesson to be learned here is
that not only can you help avoid
developing age related macular
degeneration blindness by eating a
good diet and taking vitamin and
mineral supplements, but you can
also significantly decrease your
risk of a heart att ack and
stroke while doing so!

An American, a Scot and a Canadian
were in a terrible car
accident. They were all brought
to the same emergency room, but
all three of them died before they
arrived. Just as they were
about to put the toe tag on the
American, he stirred and opened
his eyes. Astonished, the doctors
and nurses present asked him
what happened.
"Well, " said the American, "I remember
the crash, and then there
was a beautiful light, and then
the Canadian and the Scot and I
were standing at the gates of heaven.
St. Peter approached us and
said that we were all too young
to die, and that for a donation
of $50, we could return to the
earth. So of course I pulled out
my wallet and gave him the $50,
and the next thing I knew I was
back here."
"That's amazing!" said one of the
doctors, "But what happened to
the other two?"
"Last I saw them," replied the American,
"the Scot was haggling
over the price and the Canadian
was waiting for the government to
pay for his."

the barman, "Can I have
a pint of Less, please?"
"I'm sorry sir," the barman replies,
looking slightly puzzled,
"I've not come across that one
before. Is it a spirit?"
"I've no idea," replies the guy,
"The thing is, I went to see
my doctor last week and he told
me that I should drink less."

One day a new mother went out to
run some errands, leaving her
husband in charge of their baby
son for the day.
The proud father played with his
son all morning, but after a few
hours, the baby began to cry uncontrollably.
The father tried
everything he could think of to
get the baby to stop - he offered
him the bottle, burped him, rocked
him, but nothing seemed to
work and the baby just cried more
and more.
Finally, the new dad became worried,
and decided to take the baby
to the pediatrician. The
doctor began to examine the squalling
baby, not finding anything wrong.
Finally, he worked his way down
and undid the child's diaper.
"Well, here's your problem," the
doctor chuckled, pointing at the
overloaded diaper. "This
baby hasn't been changed all day!"
The father scratched his head, perplexed.
"But..." he said, "The
diaper package says it's good for
up to 10 pounds!"

Charles Alderton, a Texan pharmacist,
created a soft drink and
named it after his prospective

Pepper. The doctor was unimpressed,
so Alderton dropped the

Avocados Can Lower Your Cholesterol
by James Groves
Are you're one of those people who
enjoy eating avocados? If you
are, then you could be lowering
your cholesterol every time you
eat one. A recent study from
Australia showed that people who
ate 1 1/2 avocados per day lowered
their cholesterol levels from
an average of 236 to 217.
Now here's the twist to this study.
Before going on the avocado
diet, these people spent three
weeks on a low-fat diet. The
result was an average decrease
in cholesterol levels of only 4.9
percent compared to 8.2 percent
on the avocado diet.
Here's another avocado fact you're
going to love. The avocados
preserved the levels of HDL (the
good cholesterol), but on the
low-fat diet these good HDL's went
down 14%.
The answer is one word: monounsaturates,
the main fat found in
avocados and the same one that
we all recognize as being healthy
that is found in olive oil.
So eat up, enjoy avocados, and stop
worrying about the fat!

Exercise Helps With Depression
Exercise is a great way to enhance
your immune system, lose
excess weight, build muscle, and
promote feelings of well-being.
An hour of aerobics or any type
of intense cardiovascular
exercise can help reduce tension,
anger, and fatigue. Research
has revealed that the results can
be more significant in those
that felt depressed before exercising.
In fact, exercise helps
lift a person's spirits.
A study reported in the December
2001 Journal of Sports Medicine
and Physical Fitness revealed that
exercise affects individuals'
moods. Eighty young men and women
took mood tests just before and
after an hour-long aerobics class.
Fifty-two of the participants
were in depressed moods before
the exercise. After exercise, the
depressed group reported less anger,
fatigue and tension, and
increased vigor.
I recommend exercising at least
30 minutes every day. A good
workout always makes one feel better
physically and mentally.
Consult with your physician to
determine an exercise program that
is right for you.

Computer Eye Syndrome
By Dr. Marc Grossman
The use of computers in the United
States and the world is
growing exponentially. The amount
of time one spends looking at a
computer screen is also increasing
similarly. Humans evolved
biologically as “hunters and gatherers”.
Our vision developed
primarily for seeing distance (98%
of all humans are born
farsighted).
Our eye muscle systems are in their
most relaxed state when we
use our vision for distance objects
and space. In similar
fashion, our bodies were designed
for movement. Maintaining a
sitting posture for long periods
of time is unnatural for us.
As a result, working at a computer
for a long period of time
without breaks can cause unnatural
strain on us that can result
in a condition called “computer
fatigue syndrome”.
Computer users have shown to have
a reduced average blinking time
while using computers, which, according
to Japanese
investigators, causes a major risk
of developing transient, or
short-term dry eyes.
Over a period of time, excessive
computer use can have cumulative
negative effects on the user including
the worsening of
farsightedness, nearsightedness,
astigmatism, increased
nearsightedness, blurred vision,eye-focusing
disorders and poor
eye coor dination. In addition,
constant working from a set
position can cause neck and shoulder
stiffness, as well as stress
headaches, which can then cause
pain in the jaw (referred to TMJ
or temporomandibular joint).
Ways to protect your vision include
using only LCD screens, using
natural lighting, sitting in a
comfortable chair with the screen
slightly below eye level, maintaining
proper posture, and doing a
one to two minutes of eye exercises
every ½ hour to hour spent on
the computer.

If you need to lose weight, you
must be in caloric deficit. This
can be accomplished by cutting
down your caloric intake, or
increasing the amount of calories
you burn by exercising. I
recommend both. Even though a calorie
is a calorie when it comes
to weight loss, a calorie is not
a calorie when it comes to your
health. Make sure your daily diet
includes several servings of
fruit and vegetables and whenever
possible, avoid foods that
contain trans fat.
