If You Aren't Feeding Your Kids Organics...Read This
Those who believe that there's little to be gained by feeding children organic foods have said that any difference in pesticide consumption through food is probably canceled out by other sources: use on pets, in households, and in gardens. But children eat more food per unit of their body weight than adults do. It follows that they get relatively higher doses of the pesticides and other chemicals that have become important contaminants in our food supply.
In a study that was the first of its kind, researchers in Seattle, Washington set out to find out whether children get their greatest dose of pesticides through the foods they eat (as opposed to other exposures), and if so, whether eating organics can substantially reduce that dose.
The study sought to account for other potential sources of organophosphorus pesticides in a child's environment: the home, the garden, pets, lawn, and any other use.
Investigators recruited their subjects in two grocery stores in the Seattle area. One store offered more organic choices than the other, but the conventional market was in an area of roughly the same socioeconomic class as the organic market. They asked parents if they would be willing to participate by recording their child's dietary intake for three days, especially whether the foods the child was eating were organic or conventional; and to collect all of the child's urine—a separate container for each collection—through that period. Eighteen children with primarily organic diets and 21 with primarily conventional diets were recruited.
The children's urine samples were analyzed for a specific class of pesticide metabolite—a substance excreted in the urine that reflects the amount of the pesticide in the body. Children on a primarily organic diet had an amazing nine times lower concentration of this pesticide metabolite in their urine! This study concluded that children's diets—not household pesticides or those used in yards and gardens—are the main source of pesticides in their bodies. "Our current study suggests that consumption of organic foods may be able to reduce children's exposure levels below those of the general adult population," the authors write.
Another reason to choose organic: according to Harold A. Mooney, a professor of Environmental Biology at Stanford University, the synthetic nitrogen-based fertilizers most commonly used on conventional crops can enter the atmosphere, contributing to global warming. At the current pace, the use of these fertilizers is expected to increase threefold by 2050. Consumers insisting on organic methods for fertilizing crops could help to reduce that burden.

Consumers may soon be able to purchase a brand new over the counter weight loss pill. Federal health advisors have already given their go ahead, but it still needs FDA approval before it goes on sale nationwide. GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare is in position to offer this fat blocking pill to the public. They are shooting for a release date by the end of this year.
Consumers want to know if this is ground breaking news or if this is another attempt to rob them of their hard earned cash. The difference between this new diet pill, called orlistat and currently being sold with a doctor's prescription as Xenical, and several others from the past are that orlistat is garnering nationwide media and public interest.
"Everyone is getting excited about taking a magic pill," states Lynn VanDyke, elite personal fitness professional and fitness nutritionist. "It all sounds brilliantly simple until we read about its side effects and cost."
In 6 month clinical trials, obese people taking orlistat lost 5.3 - 6.2 pounds more than those given a placebo. Representatives from GlaxoSmithKline also announced that at $12-$25 per week for the pill over 5 million people in America would buy the drug if it sold over the counter.
VanDyke explains, "The corporations are planning on making over $1 billion per year in sales if orlistat is sold over the counter. As consumers we must educate ourselves and hold ourselves personally responsible. This drug has shown unpleasant side effects in half of the trial participants. That's just outrageous."
GlaxoSmithKline lists orlistat's possible side effects as loose and oily stools, gas, incontinence and oily spotting. Even the FDA panel members are concerned with how this diet pill will interact with diabetics, bulimics, organ transplant patients and those taking other prescription pills. Watchdog groups such as Public Citizen urged the panel to reject the company's application, calling it a "desperate attempt to revive this barely effective drug by an OTC switch."
"All in all, the magic pill leaves you bloated and oily. It stops working once you stop taking it. That adds up to between $288 and $600 per 6 months. That is how long the GlaxoSmithKline recommends taking this pill before stopping for a break. I would much rather learn a few simple tools on how to eat well and live a healthy life than take this so-called miracle pill," says VanDyke.
Consumers who are in dire straits to lose fat but are concerned with the side effects and cost of orlistat are being referred to the Melt the Fat Interactive Guide (more info at http://melt-the-fat.com). It provides detailed step-by-step processes that develop a healthy lifestyle filled with fitness, eating to live and life goal setting.

Trivia
A person from New Jersey was surprised to read the "patient counseling" instructions a local pharmacist typed onto a recent prescription for her cat. "Do not mix with alcohol," it warned. "Use caution when driving or operating machinery." The cat owner noted, "We had no idea what the cat was up to when he felt good!"
Sugar or Sugar Substitutes
by James Groves
This month's health tip is in response to a subscriber's questions about sugar substitutes. But before I begin, I'd like to thank Cindy for bringing up this issue and her honest concern for good health. She wrote and asked me if there were any benefits to using regular sugar over any possible side effects to using sugar substitutes.
I was trying to think back to a time when I did use and enjoy sugar. One fond memory I have is of my Grandmother melting brown sugar in butter and then pouring it over a plain cake. But the buzz word here is "brown sugar." She used a natural, unbleached sugar. If you enjoy the taste of sugar, try to find something like this, that's natural and then only use a small amount.
Sugar substitutes are just what the name implies, substitutes, something artificial or chemically produced. One such example that is used extensively is aspartame. It has several very real, and very risky side effects. It can cause seizures in people with phenylketonuria, a metabolic disorder that makes it difficult to break down phenylalanine, an amino acid found in aspartame. And there have been reports of aspartame's connection to headaches, and in severe cases it has caused other allergy like symptoms.
Here are my suggestions for those of you who enjoy the sweet taste of sugar. Eat lots of fruit. Most of them are naturally sweetened with fructose. And unless you are specifically allergic to certain fruits, these "sugars" won't cause you any problems. Try using honey instead of sugar. If you really insist on using sugar, use less of it. Try to find natural sugars, ones that aren't refined or bleached.
Join me next month and we'll talk about ways to get a good night's sleep. These health tips can only be found in Dr. Osgoodby's Body Transformations Newsletter.

James Groves

Green Tea - Towards a Healthier
Lifestyle
by Kevin Woodward
Regularly drinking green teas (there are many varieties) is a pleasurable and easy way to move toward a healthier life. Read on and prepare to be amazed at the benefits of green tea.
Research indicates that tea may work against heart attacks, stroke, and thrombosis. Tea contributes to this in several ways. It does so in a general way through its role as gentle stimulant to the heart and circulatory system. Secondly, it appears to keep the blood vessel walls soft. Thirdly, there is evidence that the polyphenols in tea inhibit the absorption of cholesterol in the digestive tract, which could help decrease the cholesterol in the bloodstream. Fourthly, it may decrease the blood's tendency to form thrombi, or unwanted clots. Often several of these functions operate together against stroke or heart attack. Strokes and thrombosis often occur because the blood vessels have lost their elasticity. Rutin, found in green tea, has long been prescribed to keep these walls soft.
Green tea has turned out to be a double-barreled threat to tooth decay because of the natural polyphenols (tannin) and the fluoride it contains. Polyphenols tend to reduce the formation of plaque, while fluoride strengthens tooth enamel so that it can resist decay.
Considerable research is being carried out on the role of tea drinking in preventing cancer. Out of 25 papers related to health presented at the HangzhouSymposium, seven reported on research on cancer and tumors. Green tea seems to get the best results, with Lung Ching Preferred. Stomach cancer, the number one cause of death in Japan, is at its lowest rate in Shizuoka prefecture along the coast southwest of Tokyo. One explanation is that Shizuoka is a tea growing district and its inhabitants drink large amounts of green tea.
Researchers believe that green tea has an effect against cancer because it inhibits the formation or action of cancer-causing substances. Green tea may block the action of nitrosamines which can cause cancer, said Dr. Han Chi, and associate professor at the Institute of Nutrition and Food Hygiene under the Chinese Academy of Preventative Medicine. In a test of 145 types of tea, she and her colleagues rated green tea highest, with a blocking rate of 90 percent. Brick, Jasmine, oolong, and black tea followed in that order.
In China it is widely stated that green tea is a source of vitamin C. Since this vitamin is destroyed by heat and tea is made in hot water, this statement seems somewhat contradictory. However, recent tests in China have found that heat destruction of vitamin C does occur, but not in tea. Something in tea, as yet undetermined, apparently helps stabilize vitamin C. The amount of vitamin C contained in green tea varies greatly depending on growing conditions, the age of the leaves at picking, and how long they have been stored. According to Chinese calculations, typical green tea made with three grams of dry leaves to a cup should yield about six milligrams of vitamin C in three infusions in water at 158 to 212 degrees Fahrenheit (70 to 100 degrees centigrade). Eighty-five percent of the vitamin C is released in one five-minute infusion at 176 degrees Fahrenheit (80 degrees centigrade).
Tea also contains vitamins B1, B2, K and bioflavonoids plus niacin, folic acid, and manganese, but in such small amounts as to be negligible. Another way tea may help fight cancer is through preventing cell mutation. The antioxidant actions of the polyphenols in green tea inhibit mutation of the DNA in healthy cells, which can cause them to become cancer cells. In rats injected with a cancer-causing substance and fed green tea, cancer did not develop, but it did in the control group without tea. An antioxidant made from green tea applied to the skin significantly inhibited growth of induced skin cancer in mice. In similar tests in Fujian province, green tea markedly decreased the incidence of Lung cancer in rats. It seems to be the epigallo catechin gallate (EGCC) that reduces the occurrence of aberrant DNA replication in epithelial cells.
Some researchers claim tea acts as a mild germicide in the digestive tract to help prevent food poisoning and diseases like cholera, typhoid, and dysentery. "The antibacterial effects of tea have been well documented in Chinese scientific literature," writes Dr. Albert Y. Leung in Chinese Herbal Remedies. "Green teas have stronger effects than black teas. They are effective against any types of bacteria, including those that cause dysentery, diphtheria, and cholera... in treating bacillary dysentery, amoebic dysentery, acute gastroenteritis (inflammation of stomach and intestine), and enteritis (inflammation of the intestine)."
When pregnant or nursing only small amounts of green tea should be used, it may also interfere with the action of MAO inhibitors and blood thinning medication. Also the consumption of green tea may interfere with the absorption of medicines. This article is intended to be for information about the nutritional benefits of green tea only and should not be regarded as medical advice in its own right. You should seek the assistance of a qualified physician if you require medical advice on any condition mentioned in this article.

If you need to lose weight, you
must be in caloric deficit. This can be accomplished by cutting down your
caloric intake, or
increasing the amount of calories
you burn by exercising. I recommend both. Even though a calorie is a calorie
when it comes
to weight loss, a calorie is not
a calorie when it comes to your health. Make sure your daily diet includes
several servings of
fruit and vegetables and whenever
possible, avoid foods that contain trans fat.
