How To Prevent Type 2 Diabetes
by Dr. Robert Osgoodby
A healthy diet and regular exercise program not only will improve your appearance, but it also can improve your health and decrease your risk of developing certain diseases. Recent studies by Harvard researchers have concluded that moderate exercise and a healthy diet can prevent most cases of type 2 diabetes - the most common form of diabetes. The study overwhelmingly indicated that by making the appropriate lifestyle changes, diabetes can be prevented over 90% of the time. The study also concluded that lifestyle changes significantly reduced the risk of getting the disease by 58% among people who already showed signs of developing diabetes.
Type 2 diabetes accounts for over 90% of all diabetes cases. It occurs when your body can not properly utilize insulin in getting nutrients to your cells. This results in high levels of sugar in your blood. The number of cases of diabetes has been growing rapidly. Studies indicate that over 16 million Americans have some form of diabetes! Type 2 diabetes used to be considered a disease of the old, but not anymore. It is becoming much more prevalent in younger people and has recently been showing an alarming increase among young people.
Diabetes is a disease where your underlying genetic background is critical. If you have these genes and are at risk of developing diabetes, your lifestyle decisions very well may determine whether these genes become active or remain dormant.
What is most interesting is that Harvard researchers determined that 91% of cases among the people they studied could have been prevented by watching their weight, eating a healthy diet, moderate exercise, and not drinking and smoking. Being overweight is the number one reason people contract diabetes - 61% of all cases are attributed to obesity and weight problems.
Some other interesting facts: Overweight women cut their risk by 24% simply by walking regularly. There is a direct correlation between the amount of exercise and instances of diabetes. The more exercise, the less instances. Those who did 7 or more hours a week of exercise had a 29% lower risk than those who did not exercise or exercised less than 30 minutes per week. Eating a diet that is high in fiber, low in fat and low in partially hydrogenated oils (french fries, commercial baked goods) also significantly decreases your risk. If you already do not do so, become a label reader!
Pepper may not just be for seasoning. Capsaicin is a protein compound found in pepper and peppers significantly lowers blood sugar levels and increases insulin levels. Researchers have not concluded if the pepper compound acts by increasing the release of insulin, or by slowing it's breakdown. Large doses of aspirin also lower your blood sugar and is an effective treatment of diabetes, but researchers warn that that the large doses required have detrimental side effects (intestinal bleeding, dizziness, nausea) that outweigh the benefits.
There are many diseases and illnesses you have no control over, but type 2 diabetes is highly preventable by watching your weight, exercising, eating a healthy diet, and not smoking or drinking.

Obesity
by Dr. Earl Mindell
According to data from the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), 33 percent of American adults are obese (that is, 30 or more pounds above ideal weight). The gold standard for gauging whether you're beyond a healthy weight is the Body Mass Index, or BMI. You can find a BMI calculator at the CDC's Website.
http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/dnpa/bmi/adult_BMI/english_bmi_calculator/bmi_calculator.htm
A BMI above 25 means you're overweight; anything 30 and up denotes obesity. A BMI of 40 or greater indicates morbid obesity. Morbidly obese individuals are at least 100 pounds beyond healthy weight, which doubles their risk of premature death. A BMI of 50 or greater indicates malignant obesity—weight of 200 or more pounds beyond ideal. Individuals with malignant obesity have up to 10-fold the risk of premature death in comparison with people of normal weight.

A husband and wife entered the dentist's office. The husband said, "I want a tooth pulled. I don't want gas or Novocain because I'm in a terrible hurry. Just pull the tooth as quickly as possible."
"You're a brave man," said the dentist. "Now, show me which tooth it is."
The husband turns to his wife and says, "Open your mouth and show the dentist which tooth it is, dear."

If you purchase a new bike for your child, place their picture inside the handle bar before placing the grips on. If the bike is stolen and later recovered, remove the grip and there is your proof of who owns the bike.
About the Pneumonia Vaccine
by Frank Barnhill, M.D.
“But Doc!” “I took a pneumonia shot last year.”
Patients are often frustrated when told they may have pneumonia even though they had a pneumonia vaccine in the past year or two. Unfortunately, it’s a common misunderstanding that the “pneumonia shot” prevents pneumonia.
It’s important to understand both bronchitis and pneumonia can be caused by dozens of viruses, bacteria, and molds or fungi. It’s very confusing, but when we say we have pneumonia, the illness may actually be caused by a germ other than the one for which the “pneumonia shot” was made (streptococcal pneumoniae).
Ah, but the good news is that adult pneumonia vaccines were really developed to prevent the serious illnesses that can occur along with “pneumonia” or pneumoniae infections. These include septicemia (blood stream infection), meningitis (brain infections), and kidney damage. So, having a pneumonia shot may not “keep you from getting pneumonia”.
You get pneumonia by inhaling infected droplets of moisture into your respiratory system and then down into your lungs. I guess you could say, “Breathing around persons with a cough could be hazardous to your health.” That’s why we should all use good handkerchiefs to cover our mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
Just like pneumonia vaccine, the influenza vaccine you receive in the fall and early winter, will decrease the chance you will develop serious side effects of the specific flu strains contained in the mix, but often won’t help you completely avoid infection with common flu viruses or with all those other dozens of virus strains that are not a part of the vaccine.
We strongly advise pneumonia and influenza vaccination
for all persons with chronic diseases such as emphysema, asthma, diabetes,
heart disease, and any illness affecting the immune systems “ability to
fight infection”. Likewise, influenza vaccine is recommended for all persons
over age 65 and children in daycare centers.

The active ingredient in aspirin, salicylic acid, has been used as a painkiller since at least the time of the ancient Greeks. Hippocrates is known to have extracted it from the bark of willow trees. The major drawback was that it was very irritating to the stomach. In 1853, Charles Gerhardt discovered a way to buffer the acid by combining it with acetyl chloride, but never commercialized his invention. That had to wait for Felix Hoffman, a chemist at Bayer Pharmaceutical, who discovered Gerhardt's work and patented the modern formulation. Bayer owned the trademark to the name Aspirin up until World War I.

If you need to lose weight, you must be in caloric deficit. This can be accomplished by cutting down your caloric intake, or increasing the amount of calories you burn by exercising. I recommend both. Even though a calorie is a calorie when it comes to weight loss, a calorie is not a calorie when it comes to your health. Make sure your daily diet includes several servings of fruit and vegetables and whenever possible, avoid foods that contain trans fat.
