How To Eat Healthy In Today's Fast Paced World!!
by Dr. Robert Osgoodby

Nearly two-thirds of the United States population is overweight. Anyone more than 100 pounds overweight is considered morbidly obese. The term morbid obesity refers to patients who are 50 - 100% -- or 100 pounds above -- their ideal body weight.

Obesity increases a person's risk of illness and death due to diabetes, stroke, heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and kidney and gallbladder disease. Obesity may increase the risk for some types of cancer. It is also a risk factor for the development of osteoarthritis and sleep apnea. In fact, a 20-year shorter life span, has also been found in individuals with morbid obesity.

Common Causes of Obesity

* Consumption of more food than the body can use
* Excess alcohol intake
* Sedentary lifestyle

Tips for preventing weight gain:

* Avoid foods that are high in fat and sugar.
* Reduce how much alcohol you drink.
* Avoid stress, frustration, and boredom.
* If you are depressed, seek medical treatment.
*
Avoid a sedentary lifestyle by increasing your activity level:

* Perform aerobic exercise for at least 30 minutes a day, 3 times a week .
* Increase physical activity by walking rather than driving.
* Climb stairs rather than using an elevator or escalator.
* Always talk to your health care provider before starting an exercise program.

A healthy diet and regular exercise program not only will improve your appearance, but it also can improve your health and decrease your risk of developing certain diseases.  Recent studies by Harvard researchers have concluded that moderate exercise and a healthy diet can prevent most cases of type 2 diabetes - the most common form of diabetes.  The study overwhelmingly indicated that by making the appropriate lifestyle changes, diabetes can be prevented over 90% of the time.  The study also concluded that lifestyle changes significantly reduced the risk of getting the disease by 58% among people who already showed signs of developing diabetes.

What is most interesting is that Harvard researchers determined that 91% of cases among the people they studied could have been prevented by watching their weight, eating a healthy diet, moderate exercise, and not drinking and smoking.  Being overweight is the number one reason people contract diabetes - 61% of all cases are attributed to obesity and weight problems.

Napping 101
by Dr. Earl Mindel

If you can't get enough sleep at night, you can benefit from daytime napping. Getting the most out of your naps involves more than lowering your head onto your desk after lunch or falling asleep in front of daytime TV, however.

Scientists who study sleep have discovered that it consists of two distinct types: rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, during which your brain is active and often dreaming; and non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, a deeper and more restful form of sleep.

Within the NREM sleep periods there are four stages of varying depth. Stages 1 and 2 of NREM sleep are light, while Stages 3 and 4 of NREM sleep are deeper. You naturally cycle through the various stages of REM and NREM sleep throughout the night, with each stage lasting about 90 minutes at a time.

If you're awakened from stage 3 or 4 sleep, you'll feel disoriented and groggy. It's easier to wake up during stages 1 or 2. This is why a 10 - to 20 - minute "power nap" made up of light sleep can be more refreshing than a 30 - to 40 - minute snooze: you're more likely to pass into stage 3 or 4 when you go past the 20-minute mark. If you want to take a long nap and wake up refreshed, plan to stay asleep for at least 90 minutes.

The best time for a nap is between the hours of 1:00 and 5:00 p.m. Nap in a cool, quiet, darkened room, if possible. Avoid heavy food, caffeine, and exercise within two hours before you lie down. And be sure to give yourself a 15-minute window after waking up, so that you have time to wash your face, brush your teeth, and have a cup of tea (preferably green tea) before leaping back into your life.

Carpal tunnel Syndrome
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

A neurologist diagnosed a patient with carpal tunnel syndrome. The same patient also had a back problem and went to see an orthopedic surgeon. The orthopedic an was full of ego and told the patient he did not have carpal tunnel syndrome.

The patient came back to the neurologist and told him what the surgeon said.

The neurologist, being diplomatic and wanting to keep his turf too, said, "Yes, sir, the orthopedic Surgeon is absolutely right. You do not have carpal tunnel syndrome in your back!"

-----

"Do you mind telling me why you ran away from the operating room?" the hospital administrator asked the patient.

"Because the nurse said, "Don't be afraid! An appendectomy is quite simple."

"So...."

"So?" exclaimed the man... "She was talking to the doctor!!!!"

-----

A prisoner who is desperate to get out of jail has been teaming with his doctor and has been in & out of the hospital on some pretext of illness. He is now in one of such visits and very desperate to get out of jail permanently, tells the doctor, "Look here, doc! You've already removed my spleen, tonsils, adenoids, and one of my kidneys. I only came to see if you could get me out of this place!"

To which the doctor calmly replies, "I am - bit by bit".

At the funeral of a cardiac specialist, the coffin was placed in front of a huge mock up of a heart made up of flowers. After the pastor finished with the sermon and eulogy, and after everyone said their good-byes, the heart opened, the coffin rolled inside and the heart closed. Just at that juncture of pin-drop slience one of the mourners burst into laughter.

The guy next to him asked, "Why are you laughing?"

"I was thinking about my own funeral", the man replied.

"What's so funny about that?", asked the guy.

"I'm a gynecologist", replied the man still laughing!

Falls and spills in the bathroom are commonplace, especially in and around the bathtub or shower.

Here are suggestions on how to prevent bathroom falls, courtesy of the American Academy of Family Physicians:

* Keep a bath mat on the bathroom floor, and quickly clean up any puddles that form.
* Use a non-slip mat in the bathtub or on the shower floor.
* Install and use handrails in the bathtub or shower.
* Use a shower chair if you have a tendency to become tired or tend to slip in the shower.

"One Step At A Time?"
by James Groves

"Your Mom was right.  Vegetables are good for you!

This the third health tip in a series about simple, easy to follow steps to improving health. Take each small step I give you and turn it into a habit, just like combing your hair or brushing your teeth.

Your mom was right, vegetables are good for you.  The new government guidelines now suggest 7 to 9 servings of fruits and vegetables per day not just four or five.  It is through these servings that we take in fiber. The foods highest in fiber include peas, apples, pears, and pinto beans.

Fruits and vegetables also contain immune-boosting phyto- chemicals including antioxidants, which boost your immune system and promote good health.

Here are some ideas to help you increase your intake of fruits and vegetables each day.  Add a green salad to your dinner meal every day.  Add an assortment of vegetables to this salad such as carrots, red cabbage, radishes, cucumbers, alfalfa sprouts, peppers, whatever you can find that is in season.

Try to eat fresh fruits and vegetables.  If you don't have the time to cook only fresh vegetables, then buy frozen bags and don't overcook them. Try to avoid canned vegetables because 60% of the vitamin C content is lost during the blanching process, a process that takes place before vegetables are canned. And only 6% of vitamin C is left in canned peas by the time you serve them to your family.

I suggest that you either purchase organically grown fruits and vegetables or use a special rinse product called Healthy Harvest Fruit & Vegetable Rinse, available at most health food stores.  This special rinse helps to protect your family from pesticides used on most fruits and vegetables.

Encourage all of your family members to snack on raw vegetables and fresh fruit rather than cookies or a sweet snack.  Add fruit to breakfast cereal or oatmeal.  Offer fruit smoothies for breakfast or add fruit to yogurt.  Send fruit and raw vegetables in your children's lunches and offer these as dessert rather than ice cream or pie. Keep offering and eventually everyone in the family will be enjoying the benefits of fresh fruit and raw vegetables.

These health tips can only be found in Dr. Osgoodby's Newsletter. So watch for us for the next few months. You'll be glad you did. Join me next month and I'll show you how to eat more fruits and vegetables end enjoy doing it!

Live in Passion and Good Health,
James Groves

If you need to lose weight, you must be in caloric deficit. This can be accomplished by cutting down your caloric intake, or increasing the amount of calories you burn by exercising. I recommend both. Even though a calorie is a calorie when it comes to weight loss, a calorie is not a calorie when it comes to your health. Make sure your daily diet includes several servings of fruit and vegetables and whenever possible, avoid foods that contain trans fat.
