Cosmetic Surgery
by Dr. Robert Osgoodby
You have religiously stuck to your diet and exercise program, decreased your body fat percentage, and reached your goal weight, but - you still have that extra skin or those ugly stretch marks. You look great in clothes, but not so great without them. Cosmetic surgery is a solution, but surgical risks still exist.
Improved surgical techniques have made liposuction, tummy tucks, breast surgery (for women and men) and face lifts much safer. In most cases, I am not an advocate of unnecessary surgery because of the complications that can occur ranging from adverse reactions to anesthesia, infection, and botched procedures that can result in permanent disfigurement and nerve damage. If you do choose cosmetic surgery, you can minimize your risks by taking these basic precautions:
1. Insist On A Top-Notch Surgeon - Looking in the phone book is not the solution. Most doctors with a medical degree can legally perform plastic surgery; no special training or certification is necessary. Choose a surgeon who is a member of The American Society For Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, http://www.surgery.org (888-272-7711) Members are certified by the American Board Of Plastic Surgery and have demonstrated their expertise in cosmetic procedures.
2. Thoroughly Research The Procedure You Desire - When you arrive for your initial consultation, you should be knowledgeable about the procedure you are interested in. You can research any procedure on the internet, in books, medical journals and magazines. Ask questions. Some examples would be: What surgical procedure would you recommend? Why? May I see before and after photos of your work? How are emergencies handled if they occur?
3. Get A Second And Third Opinion - Even if you are extremely happy with the first surgeon you visit with, get several opinions.
4. Ask Your Doctor About Anesthesia Options - Cosmetic surgery can be done under general anesthesia, regional anesthesia, or local anesthesia. If you have a certain preference for a certain anesthesia, do not insist that a doctor use a form of anesthesia that his team has little experience with. If you are determined to have a certain form of anesthesia that your doctor is not comfortable with, choose another surgeon. Make sure your anesthesiologist is board certified. You can find out by contacting the American Board Of Medical Specialties at http://www.abms.org or at (866) 275-2267.
5. Reconsider Cosmetic Surgery If You Smoke, Have Vascular Disease Or Diabetes - Most plastic surgery procedures including face lifts and tummy tucks, require that the tissue and skin survive temporarily on a limited blood supply. There is a much higher risk of complications in people who have medical conditions or bad habits that decrease circulation.
6. If It Sounds To Good To Be True, It Probably Is - Beware of outrageous claims. A face-lift can make you look younger, but it won't stop "Father Time." Liposuction can improve your appearance, but can't cure obesity or prevent future weight gain.
Before undergoing plastic surgery, make sure you understand what realistically can be accomplished, and what can not.

A woman in our weight loss plan was lamenting that she had gained weight. She'd made her family's favorite cake over the weekend, she reported, and they'd eaten half of it at dinner.
The next day, she said, she kept staring at the other half, until finally she cut a thin slice for herself. One slice led to another, and soon the whole cake was gone. The woman went on to tell us how upset she was with her lack of willpower, and how she knew her husband would be disappointed.
Everyone commiserated, until someone asked what her husband said when he found out.
She smiled. "He never found out. I made another cake and ate half!"

My family physician told me of an incident that actually happened to him back in the early days of his practice.
He said a woman brought her baby to see him, and he determined right away that the baby had an earache. He wrote a prescription for ear drops. In the directions he wrote, "Put two drops in right ear every four hours" and he abbreviated "right" as an R with a circle around it.
Several days passed, and the woman
returned with her baby, complaining that the baby still had an earache,
and his little bottom was getting really greasy with all those drops of
oil.
The doctor looked at the bottle
of ear drops and sure enough, the pharmacist had typed the following instructions
on the label:
"Put two drops in R ear every four hours."

An eighth-grade teacher was leading a discussion on the qualifications for being President of the United States. After the teacher commented that a person must be a natural-born citizen, one of the students raised her hand. "Does that mean that if you were born by Caesarean section that you can't be President?"

Falls and spills in the bathroom are commonplace, especially in and around the bathtub or shower.
Here are suggestions on how to prevent bathroom falls, courtesy of the American Academy of Family Physicians:
* Keep a bath mat on the bathroom floor, and quickly clean up any puddles
that form.
* Use a non-slip mat in the bathtub or on the shower floor.
* Install and use handrails in the bathtub or shower.
* Use a shower chair if you have a tendency to become tired or tend
to slip in the shower.
Can I become addicted to coffee?
By Dr. Earl Mindell
You can certainly become addicted to the caffeine in coffee. A 1998 Behavioral Physiology study found that habitual coffee drinkers experienced symptoms such as weariness, inability to focus, and decreased blood pressure by missing their usual intake of coffee in the morning.
The American Journal of Psychiatry conducted studies wherein it was determined that psychiatric patients with a high intake of coffee had a tendency to experience more feelings of depression than those patients avoiding coffee. The caffeine in coffee actually serves as a temporary high, followed by even lower mood swings when the caffeine wears off.
I suggest that you drink herbal teas which are a much more sensible option because they provide health benefits like relieving stress and tension, helping with digestion, and supporting your immune system. Green tea is ideal in fighting free-radical damage. Tea anyone?

If you need to lose weight, you must be in caloric deficit. This can be accomplished by cutting down your caloric intake, or increasing the amount of calories you burn by exercising. I recommend both. Even though a calorie is a calorie when it comes to weight loss, a calorie is not a calorie when it comes to your health. Make sure your daily diet includes several servings of fruit and vegetables and whenever possible, avoid foods that contain trans fat.
A balanced diet is not a cookie in each hand.
