Your Symmetry Goals by
Dr. Robert Osgoody
Everyone has at least one muscle group that needs a little more work than the rest. For example, I can use more size in my quadriceps, my right calf is not as chiseled as my left calf, and my right bicep has more peak than my left. To work on symmetry you need three things to get started: a mirror, a piece of paper, and a pen.
Even though you probably already know what your weak areas are, stand in front of a full length mirror and take a good hard look at your body. Look at each muscle group and in writing make an honest assessment. If your upper body looks great, but y our legs need work, write it down. If you are happy with your upper body and legs but have a thick waist, write it down.
Next compare your right to your left. Most people who are right handed, will have a right arm that is more developed and stronger than their left. If you really want to see a great example of this, look at a professional tennis player and compare their racquet arm to their other arm. A professional soccer player who is predominately right footed will usually have a larger, more developed right leg. Section by section, analyze your body and in detail, write down your weak areas like I did in paragraph number two.
After you have done your analysis, the next step is to come up with a symmetry goal, and develop a written daily plan of action to achieve your goal. Let's look at my symmetry goals and plan of action as an example.
Goals:
Left Bicep - increase size and peak Right Calf - increase size and definition Right & Left Quadriceps - increase size and definition
Plan Of Action:
1. Since I train biceps twice a week, one day a week I only train my left bicep (not my right) and work on peak exercises like cable curls and dumbbell concentration curls.
2. Since I train calves twice a week, one day a week I only train my right calf doing standing and seated calf raises.
3. To increase the size of my quads, I cut down my cardiovascular exercise to only two days a week and I do it on leg days. This gives my legs the proper recovery and growth time. I also kicked up the intensity of my leg work outs and increased my number of sets on each leg exercise from four to five.
4. To gain size in my legs, I increased my daily caloric intake from 2,200 calories a day to 2,600 calories a day eating healthy low fat foods. This can be easily done with a meal replacement shake if you don't want to cook another meal.
After you modify your work out to get rid of the weak links, hit it hard for three months with your new plan of action and get back in front of the full length mirror with your paper and pen. Re-evaluate your weak areas. At this time if needed, you can modify your plan of action again. Let's say that my left bicep is looking great, but my right calf and quadriceps still need a little work. I would adjust my plan of action by going back to my normal bicep routine, but sticking with the plan of action I mapped out above for my quadriceps and right calf for another month. Re-evaluate again and make adjustments - and again -until you reach your symmetry goals.
For symmetry, it is also important that you train all muscle groups. You don't want to look like the guy in the gym with the muscular upper body and chicken legs. Don't forget forearms and lower back! Forearms and lower back are the most ignored muscle groups but they really help you in finishing your symmetrical work of art. Training your forearms makes your arms more proportional and noticeable. Training your lower back narrows your waist and helps you chisel that "V" shaped back.

The Wait To Reduce Weight

A young bride was weeping on the
phone to her mother. " I can't stand my husband any more. He's got such
a nasty disposition.
He's made me so nervous , I'm losing
my weight."
"Then why don't you leave him?" asked her mother.
" I'm going to" said the bride." I'm just waiting until he gets me down to 129 pounds!!"

" Is this a really healthy place?" asked a tourist to a local man.
"Yes , of course, " the man replied
. When I came here I couldn't say a word. I had hardly any hair on my head,
I didn't
have the strength to walk across
a room , and I had to be lifted out of bed."
"Gosh , this is truly a healthy place . How long have you been here?"
"I was born here" replied the local man.

My doctor tells me I suffer from
extreme hypochondria.
He prescribed a strong placebo,
but I don't think it's working.

Tips and Tricks
Eat slowly. I know that sometimes you have to rush your food
down because you're late for work or late for an appointment,
but if you eat slowly you will enjoy the food more, you will
feel a little more satisfied, and your body can honestly tell
you, "Hey, I'm full, no need to finish that whole plate of food"
if you eat to quickly your body doesn't have time to send you
the message that you're full and you end up eating more.
Butter! No, Parkay! Butter is Better!
by James Groves
This is the fifth health tip in a series about simple, easy to follow steps to improving health. Take each small step I give you and turn it into a habit, just like combing your hair or brushing your teeth.
Butter is better no matter what the commercials try to tell you. In fact, if eating butter caused coronary heart disease, then the people of Udaipur, India would have all been dead years ago. These people have the highest consumption rate of butter in the world, but their rate of death from heart disease is almost the same as ours here in America was at the turn of the century which was close to zero.
Since that time our consumption of margarine has increased dramatically, a total of 300%, and the rate and incidence of heart disease has grown by 3500%. Coincidence, I don't think so. Margarine, a nonfood, as I call it, is made up of vegetable oil.
And what's wrong with vegetable oil? Well, let me tell you some facts about the dangers of that oil. Numerous studies have shown that heated vegetable oil fed to animals caused hardening of the arteries and breast cancer. In one such study, those animals fed the heated oil developed tumors and all but one died within 40 months. The butter fed group had no tumors and lived a normal life.
One of the reasons we all consume so much margarine is because it's cheap. In fact, the federal government who discourages the consumption of butter, turns around and sells it to European countries, who, by the way, have a lower incidence of heart disease. They buy it from us for about 50 cents a pound, while you and I eat the "imitation" stuff.
Butter is better and if you're still eating margarine, THROW IT OUT. If you're concerned about calories or cholesterol, then just use less of it. It seems here in America common sense is not always the buzz word. Make this positive change, your heart will thank you!! These health tips can only be found in Dr.Osgoodby's Body Transformations Newsletter. Join me next month and we'll talk about ways to get a good night's sleep.

Wellness Update

Niacin is still good for cardiovascular health.
With the enormous popularity of statins for cholesterol control, niacin—the B vitamin that was once a popular cholesterol-lowering agent—has fallen out of favor. A recent article published in Life Extension magazine reminded me of how effective this older therapy can be.
When taken at doses that exceed the RDA, it raises "good" HDL by 20 to 35 percent; decreases "bad" LDL by an average of 5 to 25 percent (usually, between 20 and 40 points); decreases small LDL, the worst version of "bad" LDL, significantly; and it decreases triglycerides, another type of blood fat associated with heart disease, by 30 percent (especially when taken along with high-dose fish oil that delivers 1200 mg per day of combined EPA and DHA).
Niacin also decreases levels of a substance called lipoprotein(a), which is an indicator of genetic predisposition to heart disease and a serious risk factor. Interested? Talk with your doctor about using high-dose niacin to help control cholesterol.

Ben-Gay, the balm used worldwide for sore muscles and sprains,
was developed in 1898 by a French pharmacist and researcher,
Jules Bengue. Bengue developed Ben-Gay by mixing menthol (for its
heat-producing abilities), and salicylate of menthol (an analgesic)
in a base of lanolin (for easy application).

If you need to lose weight, you must be in caloric deficit. This can be accomplished by cutting down your caloric intake, or increasing the amount of calories you burn by exercising. I recommend both. Even though a calorie is a calorie when it comes to weight loss, a calorie is not a calorie when it comes to your health. Make sure your daily diet includes several servings of fruit and vegetables and whenever possible, avoid foods that contain trans fat.
Some cause happiness wherever they go;
others, whenever they go.
