The Holiday Season  by
Dr. Robert Osgoody

The holiday music is playing on the radio, house decorations are going up, the malls are packed and the holidays are here again!

You've been working out, sticking to your diet and making steady progress.  Make it your goal not to gain any weight over the holidays.  Don't look for huge losses during this time frame, but don't go backwards either.  You've worked too hard.

Believe it or not, you can enjoy the holiday festivities, and still keep making progress.  By incorporating the following five tips into your holiday season, you will be one of the elite few this holiday season who does not gain seven pounds between Thanksgiving and New Years.  Prove the experts wrong!

Be Carb Conscious

During the holidays, it is extremely difficult to watch your carbohydrate intake.  Everywhere you turn there are carbs!! Holiday celebrations just wouldn't be the same without mashed potatoes, stuffing, yams, pies, cookies, and cakes.  By all means, eat and enjoy carb meals during the holidays, but set realistic limits.  If you have a piece of pie, pass on the mashed potatoes.  If you have mashed potatoes and yams, pass on the pie.

Portion Control

By properly managing the size of your meal portions, you can eat anything you like.  If you have been following the program for a while, your stomach and body are already conditioned to portion control.  You don't have the urge to stuff yourself, and if you do you're uncomfortable.  If your going to load your plate, load it with healthy items like salads, lean meats and vegetables. Eat smaller portions of anything else.

Drink Lots Of Water

One of the most common questions we get is, "How many ounces of water should I be drinking a day?"  A rule of thumb is to take your body weight and divide it by two.  Whatever number you come up with is the minimum amount of water you should drink every day.  If you weigh 200 lbs., you should be drinking 100 ounces of water everyday.

If you weigh over 300 lbs., this rule of thumb does not apply. Consult with a Registered Dietician or Physician for the proper recommendations for your individual situation.

Drinking the recommended daily amount of water also flushes fats, toxins and salt from your body.  Water also fills you up and decreases your desire to eat.

Modify Your Training Program

Until New Years, modify your training program to combat those extra calories.  If you normally do 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise three times a week, increase it to 40 minutes four times a week.  This will keep your metabolism high and help you burn those extra unwanted calories.

Make it a point to add some extra athletic activities that you enjoy to burn extra calories.  Play tennis with a friend.  Play basketball with your daughter.  Wrestle with your son.  There are hundreds of fun activities to chose from that increase your heart rate and metabolism.

By watching your carbs, managing portion size, drinking lots of water and doing a little extra exercise, you'll keep making positive progress towards your fitness goals despite the holidays.  Have a happy and healthy holiday season!

Shoot the Bull
=-=-=-=-=-=-=

An Indian walks into a cafe with a shotgun in one hand pulling a male buffalo with the other.

He says to the waiter: "Want coffee."

The waiter says, "Sure, Chief. Coming right up."

He gets the Indian a tall mug of coffee. The Indian drinks the coffee down in one gulp, turns and blasts the buffalo with the shotgun, causing parts of the animal to splatter everywhere and then just walks out.

The next morning the Indian returns. He has his shotgun in one hand, pulling another male buffalo with the other. He walks up to the counter and says to the waiter

"Want coffee."

The waiter says "Whoa, Tonto! We're still cleaning up your mess from yesterday. What was all that about, anyway?"

The Indian smiles and proudly says .

"Training for position in United States Congress: Come in, drink coffee, shoot the bull, leave mess for others to clean up, disappear for rest of day.

A lady goes into a bar and sees a cowboy with his feet propped up on a table. He has on the biggest boots she's ever seen.

The woman asks the cowboy if it's true what they say about men with big feet.

The cowboy says, "Sure is! Why don't you come back to my place and let me prove it?"

The woman figures why not, and spends the night with him.

The next day she hands the cowboy a $100 bill.

Blushing, he says, "Nobody has ever paid me for my services before. I'm flattered."

The woman replies, "Well, don't be. Take this money and buy yourself some boots that fit."

Tips and Tricks

Eat slowly.  I know that sometimes you have to rush your food
down because you're late for work or late for an appointment,
but if you eat slowly you will enjoy the food more, you will
feel a little more satisfied, and your body can honestly tell
you, "Hey, I'm full, no need to finish that whole plate of food"
if you eat too quickly your body doesn't have time to send you
the message that you're full and you end up eating more.

The Good, The Bad, and The Oily
by James Groves

This is the sixth health tip in a series about simple, easy to follow steps to improving health. Take each small step I give you and turn it into a habit, just like combing your hair or brushing your teeth.

Are you confused when you go to the store to purchase an oil for cooking?  I can certainly understand the confusion.  Let's see, there's vegetable oil, corn oil, olive oil, sunflower oil, safflower oil, peanut oil, cornola (whatever that is) and for you southerners, there's always lard.  This last one I just named is not a misprint.  Lard is a white, thick, cooking substance that's been around for a long time.  I can remember my Grandmother used this toothpaste, looking glob of white to fry chicken.

So how do you begin to select an oil.  First DO NOT ever use vegetable oil.  Remember last week's health tip was about butter versus margarine (which is pure vegetable oil).  If you missed that article be sure to write Bob and ask for the issue.

Second, DO NOT use the lard I just mentioned above.  If it becomes solid and stays solid at room temperature, then imagine what it does in your arteries.  Clog-city!!

Your best choice is always olive oil because it tastes good and it's beneficial for your health.  Extra-virgin olive oil is great on salads or pasta, but it's also great for cooking.  The extra-virgin is usually a little more expensive, but that's because it's the first gentle pressing of the olive and it is less tampered with than other kinds.

So now is the time to go to the pantry and throw out all those saturated fats and even those polyunsaturated ones like corn oil, safflower oil, and soybean oil.  Purchase a good quality olive oil. Your arteries and your heart will be glad you did!

Five Ways to Improve Your Health
by Mershon Shrigley

STORE YOUR HEALTH FILES -. Did you know? There is a free service that allows you to store personal health and medical records (including EKGs, lab results and X-ray reports) in one secure, confidential, streamlined database accessible only to you and your physician. The files can be retrieved over the Internet or fax anywhere in the world. Go to www.personalmd.com.

HOLIDAY EATING - You can easily rack up 1,000 to 1500 calories at a cocktail party alone! Here's some help: Start by taking small portions of several things on the cocktail table. Sample each choice. Take more of what you really, really like and leave the rest. Add lots of veggies to your plate (watch the dip) and eat slowly. Really watch out for the alcohol. It is a triple whammy.  Stick with a wine spritzer as it has the fewest calories of any alcoholic drink.

DON'T MIX MEDICINES - When herbs are combined with prescription drugs the result can be over medication and dangerous interactions. Warfarin, for example, is often prescribed as a blood thinner and to help prevent clots. But ginkgo and garlic have similar effects. Mix the herbs and the warfarin and you increase the risk of hemorrhagic stroke.

FIVE WAYS TO REACH 100 - According to Modern Maturity Magazine Nov/Dec 99, here are five surprising ways to reach the century mark:

1. Be of Scottish, English, or French-Canadian ancestry.
2. Give blood regularly. The iron depletion may help you to produce fewer free radicals.
3. Floss your teeth. There is an association between unflossed teeth and heart disease.
4 Live on the second or third floor all your life and take the stairs.
5. If you're an unmarried woman, don't get hitched. An amazing number of centenarians are women who never married.

but 100 times more men died from Prostate cancer than from AIDS.

Beware of super-sized meals in big chain restaurants!
by Dr. Earl Mindell

If you went to your favorite chain restaurant—perhaps Ruby Tuesday’s, Cheesecake Factory, or Chili’s—and ordered something called “fresh chicken and broccoli pasta,” you’d expect something healthy and relatively low-cal, right? Well, think again. A cheese-laced dish with this name, sold by one such chain restaurant, turns out to pack 2,060 calories and 128 grams of fat—enough to feed a family of four. Ruby Tuesdays’ “Colossal Burger” weighed in at 1,940 calories and 141 grams of fat. Appetizers and desserts at these places rack up just as high a calorie count, so if you were to consume appetizer, dinner, and dessert there, you could consume some 6,000 calories at a sitting! You know that fast-food purveyors have been super-sizing their offerings and packing in the calories and fat, but you might not suspect these family-friendly chain establishments. The Center for Science in the Public Interest is on their trail, calling for labeling and nutritional breakdowns of menu items so that consumers can be fully aware of how many calories, fat grams, and sugar grams they’re taking in. This is an important step, considering that the average American eats out four times a week—and possibly, unwittingly, consuming a day’s worth (or more) of calories and fat with each of those meals.

If you need to lose weight, you must be in caloric deficit. This can be accomplished by cutting down your caloric intake, or increasing the amount of calories you burn by exercising. I recommend both. Even though a calorie is a calorie when it comes to weight loss, a calorie is not a calorie when it comes to your health. Make sure your daily diet includes several servings of fruit and vegetables and whenever possible, avoid foods that contain trans fat.
