One Tenth of One Percent

Can you make money on the Web? If you listen to the people selling bulk email addresses, you are sure of it. In the cold light of day however, the only people making money from this operation are the people selling the addresses. But the unsuspecting queue up and plop down their hard earned cash only to find that 15 million people really aren't interested in buying their program.

So where are they going wrong? They may not have a product or service that is of interest to anyone, let alone 15 million. But the hucksters who promote this, compare it to a "scatter gun" and say you will "hit" some prospects. "One tenth of one percent", they claim, "could bring you hundreds of thousands of dollars".

A cursory examination of the web will reveal numerous programs that consist primarily of people trying to sell something that they got hooked on. Basically they are trying to recover their money by finding other suckers that are just as dumb as they were.

Are there good programs on the web? Sure, but for goodness sake, use some common sense. Just because it is on the web doesn't make it an automatic money generator. You have to have a product, service or opportunity that will pass the basic credibility test. If people don't think it is a good deal, they will simply "click away".

Who is making money on the web?

Unless you have very deep pockets, like the big guys, forget the national rollouts. These guys sink millions in their web sites, and for every one that succeeds, ten fail - and these guys have deep pockets. If you can't afford to open a Walmart as a traditional business, what makes you think you can compete with them on the web? They have advertisements for their web site on prime time TV, in magazines and during the summer, on banners towed behind airplanes.

But there are people making money - they have found their "niche market". So what is your niche? Is there something that you know a lot about, or can you produce a product of interest.

If you want to make a living on the internet, you must find your niche. How about informational products? These cost little to produce and can be a profitable enterprise. While it helps if you have some writing ability, there are plenty of others who do, and might be amenable to bundling their products for you to sell.

One of the things that always frustrates someone who does have a product, is the lack of time to sell it. Why not approach a few people who do have a good product, and offer to have them represent them for a piece of the action? Someone who has an existing "mall" might be a good candidate. Since you will be controlling the delivery of the "goods", it will be pretty hard for them "beat" you out of the money due.

Everyday someone tries to sell me something. If I get two or three offers from them in a row, I immediately create a filter in my email program to automatically transfer their email to "Trash". Once the "junk" is weeded out (you know, the people shooting for 15 million) I do actually read the rest. I have read interesting offers and bought as a result of getting them. But the offers read, and ultimately purchased from, were in (you guessed it) a niche market. There are people selling things on the web that are not available anyplace else.

Finding a niche is key on the "net". Those that do, with reasonable advertising, can carve out their niche, and enjoy the benefits. Who knows, you just might be that one tenth of one percent.

In The News

FCC Delays 911 VOIP Customer Disconnect Again

The Federal Communications Commission again delayed enforcing a deadline for Internet phone service providers to disconnect customers who have not yet verified that they understand they might not be able to reach an emergency dispatcher when they dial 911 on their cellular phones.

The FCC noted that status reports from the VoIP service providers indicated that nearly all subscribers have responded to the prompts. Those providers who have received confirmations from 90 percent or more of their subscribers do not need to meet the disconnect requirement, but must continue to seek complete compliance.

Other service providers have until October 31 to reach the 90 percent threshold to avoid disconnecting users. Up to 10,000 subscribers faced disconnection under the original ruling.

Living Your Light - Even During These Times

As the pictures of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita's aftermath dominate the airwaves alongside the perpetual drone of other world conflicts in the background, it is enough to make anyone veer off what is still discernible of their spiritual path or to at least question its relevance.  These are understandably trying times for many of us even if we haven't been directly affected by recent hardships- aren't we all searching for the proverbial magic wand that would make everything better all at once?

As difficult as it may be to find ourselves in this uncomfortable space and energy, there are still ways to live out the highest and best versions of ourselves even against a backdrop that appears to be spiraling in the opposite direction. Herë are some ways to propel yourself forward even during these times:

Re-evaluate your Values

The very real suffering that many of our brothers and sisters in the Gulf Region are experiencing have made many of us stop and think. As spiritual beings having a human experience we are all in a continual process of evolution and healing.  This is as good time as any to take stock of what is presently on your life "plate" and determine if you like what you see.

Are your long-held beliefs still in tune with what is really important to you at this point in your life? Is the grudge you've been nursing for as long as you can remember the best use of your energy?  Are you comfortable with your patterns of consuming and giving?  Your treatment of Mother Earth?  Has the world somehow become a better place because you have been herë? Let what you are seeing from without and coupled with the insights you are receiving from within instigate a higher response in the arenas of your life you can control.

Let Peace (Healing) Begin With You

Some would say that the world's challenges and conflicts are just too big and overwhelming; leaving many to shrug their shoulders in defeat stating, "I'm just one person."  What if you decided to get your "house" in order figuratively speaking- (perhaps by the aforementioned recommendation of re-evaluating your values) and made adjustments accordingly.  What if you continued to make these efforts to the point of creating a life more to your liking and congruent with your cherished values? What if another person, inspired by your example, did the same, and then another and still another followed suit?

The combined efforts of many "one persons" can create a (healing) momentum that is self-sustaining. It really only takes one person to instigate broad shifts in thinking and perception that can be beneficial to society as a whole.

Be a Blessing

I read a story once about a grandfather who counseled his young grandson as an ambulance whizzed by them that every time he saw one he should pray because people often forgot or were otherwise unable to during stressful times.  We can also heed such sage counsel at this time by focusing our healing intentions towards the evacuees of Hurricane Katrina.

We can silently pray for our leaders, encouraging them towards enlightened action and decision-making. These options are always available to us whether or not we know the recipient of our efforts or even agree with their views or life choices. Volunteering our time and gifts is similarly an equally valuable way to expend our energies.

You are herë on the earth at this juncture for a reason.  If you are reading this article (a blessing in and of itself) you have accumulated a certain degree of knowledge, discernment and brainpower that can assist you in regaining your footing (on your spiritual path) regardless of the prevailing circumstances.  Even when we fall or lose hope, our connection to Spirit continually sets us aright again and again.

Things may appear murky for some time, even downright distasteful, but by availing ourselves of the unique gifts to be found in weathering these times, we can serve as a healing light for others wherever our paths take us.

Turn Visitors Into Buyers

One of the downsides of the Net is how hard it is to get visitors to buy what you're selling. Typically 1% or fewer visitors buy. The percentage of visitors that buy is called your "conversion rate."

Imagine if Kmart or Sears got only got one buyer for every 1,000 people who came through the store. Because you don't have to drive across town to get from one web site to the next, consumers are far less likely feel committed to placing an order.

Increase your orders by showing visitors what a great VALUE your product or service is. List lots of benefits the customer will get when they buy. Tell them how your product or service will make their lives better.

Put a link to your order page near the top of your sales copy and another at the bottom. Make sure people always know where to click at the moment they get the urge to buy.

A Little Humor to Start the Week

Two horses were walking back to the paddock after a day's training. One says to the other, "I can't understand why we are so slow, we come from good stock, we have the best of food, great trainers, and yet we come last in every race."

There was a dog running along side them who overheard and said, "I know what your problem is. I've seen you race and it looks to me like you begin the race really fast and use up all your energy too soon. Then towards the end, you have nothing left. What you should do is pace yourselves, and when all the other horses are exhausted, put in a spurt and you're sure to win. What do you think of that?"

The horses looked at one another and said, "WOW, a talking dog!"

Five of the six have been apprehended. Bin Sleepin, Bin Loafin, Bin Goofin, Bin Lunchin and Bin Drinkin have been taken into custody.

Our agent advised us that they could find no one fitting the description of the sixth cell member, Bin Workin, at your office. Security is confident that anyone who looks like he's Bin Workin will be very easy to spot.

Jones came into the office an hour late for the third time in one week and found the boss waiting for him. "What's the story this time, Jones?" he asked sarcastically. "Let's hear a good excuse for a change."J

Jones sighed, "Everything went wrong this morning, Boss. The wife decided to drive me to the station. She got ready in ten minutes, but then the drawbridge got stuck. Rather than let you down, I swam across the river -- look, my suit's still damp -- ran out to the airport, got a ride on Mr. Thompson's helicopter, landed on top of Radio City Music Hall, and was carried here piggyback by one of the Rockettes."

"You'll have to do better than that, Jones," said the boss, obviously disappointed. "No woman can get ready in ten minutes."

A general noticed one of his soldiers behaving oddly. The soldier would pick up any piece of paper he found, frown and say, "That's not it" and put it down again.

This went on for some time, until the general arranged to have the soldier psychologically tested.

The psychologist concluded that the soldier was deranged, and wrote out his discharge from the army.

The soldier picked it up, smiled and said, "That's it."
