Don’t Shoot the Messenger
by Bob OsgoodbyMany people attempt to do business on the Web, and some succeed and some fail. If you have great copy for your ads, you are most likely doing a respectable amount of business. Those that don’t, usually wind up blaming the ezine or web site where their ads are running. The last thing they blame is the actual ads they are using. The ads might be tired, hackneyed copy from an affiliate program that everyone has seen a hundred times, or they didn’t put a lot of thought into the construction of their ads.
All great ads start with the copy and have certain things in common. First, and foremost it has no spelling or grammatical errors. Nothing turns a prospect off faster than these types of mistakes. In addition to running all your work through a good spelling and grammar checker, having someone else carefully read what you have written is also a good idea.
Use short ads of two or three sentences with meaningful headings. Most people won't read lengthy online ads. In longer ads, such as on a web site, the use of bulleted lists, which gives an overview of key points is effective, and will make the copy more readable.
If you are advertising on a web site, there are other conventions you should follow. If it is an ad, it should also be short, and follow the rules above. If however, someone who has read your ad, is coming to your web site for more information, it should not leave the person reading it with questions that are not answered there.
Never, and that is a very long time, use images on your web page that take too long to load. If you do, the odds are you have just lost a customer. The text should be easy on the eyes and forget the cute background and text combinations. Dark blue on a black background is simply too difficult to read, and won’t be.
A white background with black text is still the best choice, however dark text on a light background is also acceptable. Using an image for a background is a mistake, and will take away from the effectiveness of your presentation.
All caps, either in an ezine ad or on a web page, should be avoided. They are very difficult to read and most people won't. Also, forget the fancy fonts. Arial and Times Roman are both very legible onscreen and if printed give a high quality copy.
While many publications use indents to start each paragraph, a blank line separating them is friendlier to the reader. Their use quickly lets the reader jump from one to another. It is also a good idea to have paragraph headings, which lead in to the next paragraph. Many people scan these headings, and if they don't get their attention, they skip to the next. Obviously then, the paragraph headings are extremely important.
You might have great copy, but if the headlines are "blah" they may just click on by. The use of blank lines and headings between the paragraphs simply makes it easier to read.
Most people read from left to right. It would therefore seem logical that all the text in your ad is aligned to the left side of the page. However - we are not talking about a lengthy document here. If your lines are short, and consist of only 4 or 5 lines, it might make more sense to center them on the page. This is a good idea if you are placing your ad in an ezine or newsletter. The text in the publication is left justified, and your use of a centered text ad will make it stand out.
While you might write great copy, you still might not make significant sales. The primary reason is that people seldom buy from a one-time ad. They will have to see your ad at least five to seven times before you can expect them to take any kind of action at all.
If you advertise in multiple places, use the same ad in all places. People will soon start to identify with your ad, and just might take the next step. Remember, that the vehicles you use for your advertising can’t perform miracles, and they are just the messenger presenting your ad to their readers. Don’t blame them for not selling your product or service when the real culprit might just be a crummy ad.

In The News
Delaware Court Shields Identity Of Blogger
The Delaware Supreme Court has rejected an effort to identify an anonymous blogger accused of defamatory remarks online. Patrick Cahill, a councilman in the city of Smyrna, had sought the blogger's identity from Comcast following several unflattering postings on the person's blog.
Although a lower court judge had denied the blogger's request for protection, the Supreme Court said that court had applied the wrong standard. In the absence of substantial evidence of defamation, Cahill's petition to identify the blogger will be denied, according to the high court. In the ruling, the court said it found for the blogger to protect against what it called "the chilling effect on anonymous First Amendment Internet speech that can arise when plaintiffs bring trivial defamation lawsuits primarily to harass or unmask their critics."
An attorney for the blogger said that statements on electronic bulletin boards and blogs are not generally considered factual but are seen as individuals' opinions. The court's judgment, however, did not identify the medium as pertinent in its application of legal standard.

How to Lighten Up and Not be So Hard on Yourself
by Michael AngierA long-time friend called me the other day seeking some support. "Jack" was feeling stuck. He's going through a tough time in his life--financially, professionally and emotionally--and he was reaching out to a few trusted friends to gain more clarity. I thought his approach was very smart, and I was honored to be one of the few he called.
Jack didn't want to repeat some familiar and unhelpful patterns and was asking what I thought might be holding him back.
The fact Jack recognized that he was feeling stuck and reached out to ensure he didn't STAY stuck told me he was way ahead of where he had been in the past. After asking him a few questions, I told Jack I believed his biggest challenge was, and has always been, that he was too hard on himself.
He accepted my observation, but he wanted more. Jack wanted to know what it would look like for him to lighten up. He wanted the specific recipe for going easier on himself.
You see, I can easily relate to Jack's issue. I used to put myself down a lot for my mistakes. I often felt stupid, inadequate, guilty and remorseful. I can still fall back into that occasionally. But I catch myself pretty quickly, and I don't stay stuck in it.
Nonetheless, I didn't feel particularly articulate or confident in the answer I gave him. Just how DO we lighten up? How do we forgive ourselves?
I think acceptance is the first step. All too often, we justify and defend instead of acknowledge what we did that didn't work. Jack wasn't doing this. He was anxious to learn and grow from past mistakes. He's also very grateful for the many good things he DOES have in his life--a very important thing.
It's also important to recognize that it's a big life. Your current situation is only a chapter in your life--maybe even a page. I'm not saying we shouldn't learn from where we are. I'm only suggesting that we keep it in its proper perspective. If you're being hard on yourself, would you be as hard on others if THEY had made the same mistake? I doubt it. Where is it written that you should be above making mistakes?
And you don't have to understand all the reasons why things are the way they are. It would be nice to understand it all, but you can't always do that. You can expend all your energy studying the root instead of picking the fruit. Learn what you can and move on. You may only be able to fully understand it later.
Remember that it's our resistance to what is that causes our pain. When we think we shouldn't be in this predicament, that it's not fair or wonder, "How could I have been so stupid," we create pain for ourselves. And in doing so, we perpetuate the stuck icky feeling.
Another thing that will move us onward and upward is to take action each day on improving our situation. We may not be able to change what's happened, but we CAN change how we react to it. When we consistently take positive action to improve upon our difficulties, we feel better about ourselves, and we begin to see progress.
We all need to forgive ourselves for our shortcomings. Jack is one of the kindest, gentlest men I know. He has a big heart. But I'm guessing, like I had done, he bought into other people's criticism and began to question his goodness. In doing so, it made it easy for him to beat up on himself.
For me, I had to learn to develop a thicker skin to protect my soft heart. As a writer and Internet publisher, it's been essential. I tell others, "Develop a thick skin and a soft heart--and never mix them up."
It also helps to surround ourselves with people who believe in us. Not necessarily people who AGREE with us, but rather people who will tell us the truth without judging us--people who see the best in us.
By being more aware, by trusting ourselves, by forgiving ourselves and by not taking ourselves too seriously, we can move out of self deprecation and into self confidence. We can lighten up, be gentle with ourselves, break fr ee and achieve the best that's within us.

Biz-Tips
by Kevin NunleyBuild Your E-Mail List With Free Goodies
Nothing will keep you going in lean times like your own house email list. Nothing will help you turn good times into GREAT profits like your own house email list.
Email is almost free to send. It's handy for people to open and read. And people who willingly give you their email address are VERY likely to value what you have to say.
Use freebies to get people to give you their email address. The most common way is to over a free, info-packed newsletter. Folks sign up, they get your newsletter, you keep their email address.
You can also do this with ebooks. Rather than giving people your web site address where they can download the book, ask for the person's email address. Then send them an email giving them a special link where they can download the ebook. Make sure to mention that you will be sending additional updates from time to time, and how to unsubscribe if they don't want them.
Provide free access to your "private area." People have to enter their name and email address to get inside. There, they find good information or freebies they can't get on the public parts of your site.
Free ebooks, coupons, reports, and ads can also work this way. MAKE SURE people KNOW you are adding their name to your list and give them a way to GET OFF your list easily. You NEVER want to be accused of SPAM.

"Simple," says the third man. "I subtracted 274 from Tuesday."

Something to Think About
By Jan TincherPut your courage into action.
If you endure, persist, stay at it once you have begun, you are displaying courage.
One might say that persistence is a form of courageous patience, a rare type of courage. If you have courageous patience, you have the ability to stand firm before you get any feedback or results. When you plan your work and work your plan, you will build and develop that type of courage within you.
Whenever you need to bolster your courage, concentrate your attention on your Power Picture, the picture you have of yourself that says I Can Do It! Create a mental picture of you as you mean to be, performing as you would like to perform.
Temper your thoughts of fear with thoughts of courage and self-esteem. What you dwell upon, grows . . . Be careful. <grin>
