Short Shrift
by Bob OsgoodbyWe receive so much information on the Internet, especially via email, that many times we have difficulty separating the good "stuff" from the junk. Most of us put unsolicited email (spam) in the junk category. By the time we weed through all that however, we are approaching information overload, and may give "short shrift" to the really good information we receive.
One way to overcome this very real problem, is to create email filters for things you may wish to read at a future time. For example, create a generic filter for the ezines or newsletters you subscribe to, or one for each. This will then automatically separate this good "stuff" from the junk. You can then keep your "inbox" clean and read the information at your leisure when you are less harried.
Use your email filters to weed out the junk. It only takes a moment or so to create a filter, and this will keep all the repeat spam out of your inbox. The best way to filter spam, is not to filter on the senders email address. Most of these are forged anyway, and are different every time. Pick out some "key words" contained in the body of the message. "ST0P SN0RING”, “Own An Offshore Retirement Fund”, “$16,000+ with ONE $20 gift" just to name a few. Filter out those emails that match your key words.
Some of the spam is one time only and you don't need to be concerned with that. One way to do it, is to create a folder titled "Spam". Every day, instead of simply deleting them, transfer them to this folder. If you see a pattern developing, you can easily pick out the worst offenders, and create a filter for them.
When you subscribe to an ezine or newsletter, don't make a summary judgment that you don't want it. Most publishers try to provide a "variety" of items, and it may take several issues before you both click. Like a baseball player, don't expect a "homerun" every time at bat. Give it a half-dozen or so issues before making up your mind. You may simply get an issue that doesn't appeal to you, but the next might be a winner.
Some people go so far as to set up a separate email account just for their personal use, and another for their ezines, which is not a bad idea. But, if you do this, for goodness sake remember which one you used. Most publishers use list servers for their mailings. You can't unsubscribe from a publication except from the address that they have on file. To prevent the "cranksters" from running amok, they require you to be signed on the address they have on file in order to be removed.
If you decide you don't want a particular publication any longer, try to unsubscribe, and if you get a message that you are not on the list, it does little good to rant and rave. If you're not there, you're not there - period. While most publishers don't want people on their list who don't wish to receive it, they have no idea what email address you used when subscribing.
Most publishers will make an honest effort to remove you from their list, and threats to report them for spamming, will not help them to remove you. The majority of the time the people who complain are using a free email account, and are automatically forwarding the mail to their main address. To compound matters, they forgot they are doing this, and get aggravated when they can't unsubscribe under their main email address.
If you are receiving a publication and cannot unsubscribe, filter their publication automatically into your trash basket. This will save you and the publisher a lot of aggravation.
There is a great deal of information on the Internet. If you approach it wisely, you will benefit. If you don't, you may be suffering from information overload, and giving some really good information short shrift because it is mixed in with all the junk mail you receive.

In The News
Hurricane Wilma
Hurricane Wilma had weakened to a category 4 strength by this morning, but forecasters warned it could still power back up. Scientists expect it to continue to batter part of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula before turning northeast, on a possible collision course with Cuba or the southeast U.S. over the weekend.
Evacuations in Cuba are already underway. At least a quarter of a million people will be evacuated from western Pinar del Rio province which is on the western tip of the country. And about as many as that could be evacuated in Havana province, the two areas that are most vulnerable to Hurricane Wilma. Hundreds of tourists have been brought in from beach resorts and American diplomats and their families are being flown to Washington, on a voluntary basis to get them out of harms way over the next few days.
If Wilma does turn its eye toward the U.S., FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, wants to make sure its response is better than it was to Hurricane Katrina. As Hurricane Wilma heads towards a potential Florida landfall this weekend, the strong winds, heavy rains and possible storm surge of up to 20 feet offer a test not only to those in Wilma's path, but also to officials in Washington, still reeling from heavy criticism of FEMA's response to Hurricane Katrina.

Business Blogging -- Should it Be A Protected Free Speech Right?
by Kamau AustinBlogging has come a long way as it relates to becoming a part of mainstream media. Blogging has more recently been credited with breaking major news stories and influencing major political campaigns.
One of my favorite sources to read on current SEO (Search Engine Optimization) developments is leading search engine marketer Aaron Matthew Wall. He has recently been commenting on a law suit from a company called Traffic Power.
Quite frankly I don't know all the issues involved, but I know young Mr. Wall (only 25) to be a straight shooter on what works and doesn't work in SEO work. People like Aaron are becoming personal brands online because of blogging.
This legal action is some what setting a standard on legal rights and actions brought against bloggers. The right of a blogger to express their opinions about businesses has caught the attention of the Wall Street Journal (obviously not owned by Aaron Wall).
I am a reader of SEO Book and have emailed Aaron Wall on occasion. I even have a review of his book on my site. From Aaron's blog I knew this was brewing for some time. Aaron will praise useful services and also tell others when something in his judgment is a scam. As a blogger it is hard to tell where to draw the line. There are so many rip-off traffic companies out there you feel obligated to tell your subscribers.
I don't know all the issues in the Traffic Power law suit, however I think a person should be able to express their opinion about their business experiences and outlook online. I see sites advertising and have even experienced some services telling you they will run your ad and get you millions of impressions. Then you discover their Alexa ranking is 3,500,000 and they are putting your ad in rotation with 16 other advertisers. It would take them forever -- and they still couldn't get you a million impressions! They are just rip-offs and when you let others know to avoid these traffic fraud type companies they get mad and may want to sue.
I am doing a lot of testing of different ways to drive lots of targeted traffic to my sites, but 60% of the companies I try are total rip-offs. Many of them I suspect generate traffic bots and not actual people. When we blog our readers expect us to have a personality and give them the inside scoop and our opinion on things. Legal action like this will really make our jobs more challenging to say the least.
Not only are companies trying to sue bloggers for their commentary, but also for feed back left by blog users. Believe it or not Mr. Wall is being sued not just for his remarks, but also for remarks some of his blog readers left on his blog!
I think Aaron is courageous in taking a stand for the ability to express his opinion, and the right of his blog users to also state theirs. He is helping to keep the Internet a media of free speech. I wish Aaron Wall well in his decision to not take his personal or critical commentary down on Traffic Power. He shouldn't have to feel afraid to state his opinion on web marketing matters, even when some companies don't approve of their reviews. These companies would do better improving their product and put less time into suing and other forms of intimidation.

Biz-Tips
by Kevin NunleyGrow Your Practice On The Internet
If you are a professional, consultant, or service provider, these tips could help you quickly increase your client list.
1. Contact professional organizations that target the same audience as you are. They might be interested in publishing your article and developing a relationship with you as their expert.
2. Put together your professional resume, convert it into a PDF file and allow your potential clients to download it from your web site. Add your photo, published articles, projects, testimonials, pricing sheet and contact information and call it a "Free Welcome Package". Make sure to follow up with everyone who downloads.
3. Assemble an electronic book out of all your articles, and give it away from your web site as an incentive to join your mailing list. Every business owner should have a growing mailing list, and with a free e-book you can achieve this easier and faster.
4. Submit your free e-book to online directories. Make sure your e-book leads your readers back to your web site to generate more targeted traffic.
5. Send your e-book to all of your prospects, clients, friends and colleagues, and ask them to send it to everyone they know. This kind of networking will almost guarantee you new clients.

A Little Humor to Start the Week
Enough is Enough
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=One night recently, my phone rang several times throughout the evening. Each time, a woman's voice asked for Ben. Each time I politely explained that I lived alone, my name wasn't Ben, and she had a wrong number. The fifth time she called, I had had enough.
"Hello?" I said.
"Can I speak to Ben, please?"
I replied, "I'm sorry, he's not in right now. Can I take a message?"
"Do you know what time he'll be back?" she responded.
"I think he said he'd be home around 10:00."
Silence on the other end... a confused silence.
"Is this Steve?"
"Yes, it is. Do you want to leave a message for Ben?"
"Well... he said he would be home tonight and asked me to call him," she said in a slightly irritated voice.
I replied, "Well, he went out with Karen about an hour ago and said that he would be back at 10:00."
A shocked voice now: "Who's Karen?!"
"The girl he went out with."
"I know that! I mean... who is she?"
"I don't know her last name. Look, do you want me to leave a message for Ben?"
"Yes... please do. Tell him to call me when he gets home."
She was sounding pretty irate at this point. "I sure will. Is this Jennifer?"
She exploded, "Who's Jennifer?" Apparently she wasn't.
"Well... he's going out with Jennifer at 10:00. I thought you were her. Sorry... it was an honest mistake."
"Ben's the one that's made the mistake! Tell him that Alice called him and the she's very upset and that I would like him to call me as soon as he gets home."
I smiled and said, "Okay, I will... but Becky isn't going to like this..."

Hi Bob,
Your tip of the day today was great as usual and the offer to cut and paste the script for the date, number of days, etc. was generous, thank you. When I attempted to copy and paste what I found on completion was double everything e.g. Today is Wednesday, October 19, 2005 Today is Wednesday, October 19, 2005.
I was really hesitant to send this to you. Requesting help with your free offer. But then I decided that others might be having the same issue.
