Reality
by Bob OsgoodbyNot a day goes by that I don't hear about someone lamenting about their decision to leave corporate America and work at home. Maybe they were laid off, decided for early retirement, or just decided that commuting four hours, coupled with an eight hour workday was simply too much. Possibly, they will keep their job and work part-time at home to earn extra income. Who knows what the reasons are, but that is not important.
They decided to start their own home business, and believed the ads about working in their pajamas when the spirit moved them. After a month or so they woke up to reality. They weren't making a dime.
Where did they go wrong? Well, when they worked for someone else, they were expected to be at work at a certain time every day. Depending on the business, there was a certain dress code, and they had goals to meet. Granted, these goals were usually determined by someone else, but they were the ones who had to meet them.
It is easy to work for someone else, as they are the ones calling the shots. They actually lived under an umbrella of discipline. Granted it was someone else's umbrella, and maybe they didn't realize this. Possibly they did, and that was the reason they decided to work on their own.
One of the most common problems behind the failure of a home enterprise, is the lack of discipline. Some think they can work when (and if) they want to, and their mailbox will "overfloweth" with "pictures of dead presidents." Well, I got news for you!
Running your own business, whether it is a brick and mortar establishment, or a home business, requires work. It usually requires more effort than if you worked for someone else. You will also have to do some things you don't enjoy. But, if you are the chief (or only) "honcho", you had better be able to handle all facets of your business.
So, how do you go about working at home? First and foremost, you have to have a regular schedule and adhere to it. This is especially true if you expect people to contact you by phone. If people try to call you, and don't get an answer, they quickly move on. You have to be available during normal business hours. If you are in an online business, this is usually from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Yes there are three time zones in the USA. If you live on the east coast like I do, when you are getting ready to pack it in for the day, folks on the west coast may just be returning from lunch.
If you are not tied to a telephone, it is still important to maintain regular hours. More importantly, you should have daily goals. If you meet those goals, the rest of the day is yours. But many people always think there is tomorrow.
For far too many, tomorrow never comes, and things that should have been done aren't. Maybe when the kids are at school will work for you, or possibly late at night. You might even have to pass up on your favorite "soap opera". Don't deal with hours, you're not being paid by the hour - deal with goal oriented results.
Working in your pajamas sounds great, and many of the offers you may hear state that you can. If I get an idea in the wee hours, I may hop on the computer dressed like that, but for normal business hours that is simply a myth. Who wants to spend their life like that?
You must have an effective work space, which is free of distractions. You should have quiet office space in your house, which is out-of-the-way, and off limits during your work hours. Treat this like an office. Keep it neat. While I am not the neatest person in the world, I do know where everything is. If I get a call from a client, I'm not fumbling about looking for the information I need. A filing cabinet next to your desk goes a long way.
When you get an email, take appropriate action the same day, then file it in a place where you can find it. Delete all emails in you "in-basket" older than 30 days. If they're older than 30 days, they're not worth anything anyway.
If you don't fall into the "trap", which many folks do, the freedom you are seeking just might become a reality.

In The News
Denial of Service Attacks Okay in Britain
A British court has acquitted a teenager of unauthorized data modification and tampering with systems, charges stemming from a denial-of-service (DOS) attack that he allegedly launched against a former employer.
The teen was charged under a section of the Computer Misuse Act (CMA), which was enacted in 1990. In the end, the trial hinged on the question of whether DOS attacks are a crime under the CMA, not on whether the attack had taken place. District Judge Kenneth Grant ruled that because the CMA does not specifically address DOS attacks, the actions of the defendant cannot be considered as violating any British law.
Many in the United Kingdom have called for an update of the CMA to reflect changes in the past 15 years, and this ruling will add fuel to the fire for such revision.

The Truth About Online Marketing
by Terri SeymourI am writing this article in the hopes of letting people know the truth about online marketing and building a home business. I have been in online marketing for almost ten years and have had several successful businesses and a couple not so successful businesses. In that time, I have learned many truths and seen many misleading half-truths. So many times you will hear how easy it is to throw up a website and then watch the money come rolling in.
Sorry folks, it just doesn't happen that easily! We are here to tell you the whole truth - no hype or misleading half-truths. When you read these ads that say things like: Make $20,000 Your First Month or All You Have to Do is Send Emails to Make 1000s Weekly! Delete it or leave the site. Things like this just do not happen. I am not saying it is impossible, but extremely unlikely! So, if you are interested in hearing the basic and honest truth about building a home business, keep reading.
Truth #1 Anyone cannot do it! It takes a certain amount of self-discipline, commitment, perseverance, strength and a LOT of work. Unfortunately, we do not all possess these qualities. If you feel that you do, then you can do it!
Truth #2 Just build it and they will NOT come! Putting up a website does in no way guarantee sales, success or an income. Just putting up a site and not promoting it, is like whispering someone's name in a crowd and thinking they will hear it. You have to work day and night and night and day on promoting your site and getting your name known. And there is much more to it then simply placing an ad here and there. There is also much more to building your own business than having a website to promote.
Truth #3 You will become frustrated and feel like giving up, many times! I guarantee you will wonder why you even started doing this and it will happen many times. Building a home business can be extremely frustrating and overwhelming at times. That is when connecting with other business builders online and offline can help keep you focused. Join some networking groups so you can talk to others who are going through the same experiences and feelings as you are. Remind yourself why you started your own business in the first place. You can work through these feelings.
Truth #4 You will spend more time than you think working your business. So many people believe that if they start their own home business they will only have to work a few hours a day or a few days a week. Sorry, but that would be a hobby, not a business. Building a business, at least for awhile, takes many hours a day, and a lot of times, 7 days a week! Be prepared to work, work, and work some more!
Truth #5 You will lose your confidence from time to time. This still happens to me and I have been in business for almost ten years! If you feel like you are a failure, take a good look at the business you are in or the company you represent. Is this really the business for you? Do you have the passion needed to make this business a success? Don't be afraid to change your business. I had several businesses before finding the one that is truly my niche! You cannot let feelings of failure stop you from making your dreams come true.
Truth #6 Success definitely does NOT come quickly or easily! As I mentioned before, you will need to work your business 7 days a week. It will be a part of you for the rest of your life and must become a part of your daily routine. I have seen many people quit their business for reasons like problems with their kids, or their spouse losing their job, or financial problems. These are the people that will not become a success. We all have these problems from time to time, but quitting our business is not going to stop them from happening.
Truth #7 You will need to market and advertise offline as well. So many people mistakenly believe that if they throw up a website, post a few ads here and there, and gab on the email groups all day (call it networking), their business will be a success. That is so far from the truth. Networking is fine if you do not perceive it as chatting all day on the email groups. You need to get away from the computer every day and get out in the real world and market that business! Join your local Chamber of Commerce, get involved in community events and activities, expand into surrounding communities! Pass out flyers, get business cards made up and hand them out to everyone you meet, talk to everyone you possibly can about your business. Your website should be an extension of your business, not your entire business!
Truth #8 Building your own successful business is very rewarding. And I am not just talking money. It builds your character, boosts your self-confidence, gives you a feeling of pride, makes you feel complete, gives you a purpose and much more!
Truth #9 There are a lot of wonderful people online. One of the things I enjoy most about working online is meeting so many people from so many different places. Without my business, I would never have known these people even existed! Establishing all these online relationships is definitely one of the rewards of online marketing.
Truth #10 I would recommend to anyone who feels they have the qualities needed for success to go for it! My intentions with all these truths is definitely not to discourage you from starting your own business, but to prepare you for the truth of what lies ahead. Success will not come easily or quickly. It is a long, hard, frustrating journey to success. But, if you want it bad enough and possess the qualities needed to finish the journey, success can be yours!! And when you finally get there, you will realize that all the places you momentarily got lost or took a wrong turn were very instrumental in helping you reach your final destination! And you will also realize that it was all worth it. Owning your own successful business is very rewarding - personally, emotionally and financially!

Trivia
For the motion picture - "Mission To Mars", director Brian DePalma and crew needed to re-create the surface of the planet Mars. They chose the more than two million square feet of a 45-acre sand dune in Vancouver, Canada. To give the sand dune the color of the planet Mars, they covered it with over 15,000 gallons of red paint.

Biz-Tips
by Kevin Nunley5 Strategies for Selling Yourself
This is a constant debate. Should you sell your product or yourself? Of course you should always sell the product. But, your long term goal should be to sell yourself as well. Here's how to start.
Be completely comfortable with who you are. Try to change yourself too much and people will sense dishonesty.
You should have a marketing strategy, but also be willing to give free advice and referrals. If you are building a long-term enterprise, this will be invaluable as you open up relationships with your customers.
Gain a reputation of being sincerely interested in your customers BEFORE you start selling. Talk to them informally and make them remember you were there.
If you have a web site, update it often and make sure there is plenty of information. Invite people to refer to your web site for details on your products and services.
Above all, make yourself interesting to others. If you sell yourself as well as the product you will always have an eager market.

A Little Humor to Start the Week
Truthfully Speaking
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=A cowboy went to buy an insurance policy. The agent asked, "Have you ever had an accident?"
"Nope," replied the cowboy, "last summer, a bronc kicked in two of my ribs ... and a couple of years ago, a rattlesnake bit me on the ankle."
"Wouldn't you call those accidents?" quizzed the puzzled agent.
"Naw," the cowboy replied. "They did it on purpose!"

We've been letting our six-year-old go to sleep listening to the radio, and I'm beginning to wonder if it's a good idea.
Last night he said his prayers and wound up with: "And God bless Mommy and Daddy and Sister. Amen-and FM!"

A boy who was a witness to a crime was called to testify in court. He was approached by the defense attorney who asked, "Did anyone tell you what to say in court?"
"Yes, sir," answered the boy.
"I thought so," said the attorney. "Who was it?"
"My father, sir."
"And what did he tell you?" the attorney asked accusingly.
"He said that the lawyers would try to get me all tangled up, but if I told the truth, everything would be all right."

It was April and Tax Day was looming when an elderly woman showed up at my desk at the IRS. She said she required a thick stack of tax forms.
"Why so many?" I asked.
"My son is overseas," she said. "He asked me to pick up forms for the soldiers on the base."
"You shouldn't have to do this," I told her. "It's the base commander's job to make sure that his troops have access to the forms they need."
"I know. I'm the base commander's mother."

Feedback - Q&A
Hi Rita – My problem was we were leaving on Monday and had two appointments set up for Wednesday in our office in Florida. One was for repair of the air conditioning and the other for the installation of our Internet Access. Planning on being back to work on Thursday, it was important that we be there, as rescheduling could have delayed things significantly.
While the trip down was difficult on Monday driving through the rain from Wilma, we did make it on time.

Something to Think About
By Jan TincherBad things are happening all the time.
Good things are happening all the time.
What you are paying attention to controls how your body will feel.
If you are hearing, reading, seeing bad things all the time, then that is how your body will ultimately be feeling. It won't be able to help it.
Just like you can't put a child in a family that yells and curses all the time and expect her or him to feel happy.
Think about it. Take control of your environment so that you can live a happy and fulfilled life. Give yourself a chance.
