Time to Take a Break
by Bob Osgoodby

Every once in awhile, I sit down at the computer to write an article or copy for an ad, and nothing happens.  A dozen or so, false starts later, I finally decide on a topic, but the words just won't come.  Only a paragraph or two gets written, and it's time to call it a day.  Later, looking at what was done, I usually highlight it, and hit the "delete" key.

Other times, the words flow as if from a "magic spring" and before I know it, the article or ad is complete, but far too long.  I try to keep articles around 700 words, as ones much longer seem to drag, and quickly loose the readers interest. Effective ads should be four to six lines with 65 characters per line.

Then comes the painful task of trying to shorten it.  But, you may think, everything is important, and you can't cut a word. But, you must, and will usually wind up with something that at least makes sense.

Many people who write copy, advertising their product, have the same problem. They feel they have to give every last detail about their offer in their ad.  Nothing could be further from the truth.

You should try to give as much information as possible in the fewest number of words.  I know this is difficult, but the fact is that most people simply won't spend the time reading a long ad.  Don't worry about the length at first.  You should get all the important points down first, and then try to shorten it.

Do this for five or six ads.  Then have someone, preferably someone who is not familiar with your product or service, read them.  If you have six ads, have them rate them on a scale of one to six, with one being the best in their judgment.  Try to get others to do the same type of rating.  Be sure not to share the ratings by the other people who did this, until after the current readers rating is complete.

There may be a wide difference in the ratings, but some pattern should show up.  Take the highest scoring ad, and run with it. If it draws business, leave it alone.  Don't feel you have to tweak the ad every time is published.

Better yet, move along to the second highest rated ad, and start using that one.  Smart entrepreneurs may run several ads in the same publication for the same product or service.  Since they construct their ads properly, people may not even realize they are from the same person.

It is highly important to track which ads are generating business.  One of the easiest ways is to automatically insert a subject in the email they will send you. The following address will automatically insert the subject "Freead” as the subject when someone clicks on the following address: mailto:bob@adv-marketing.com?Subject=Freead

A simple way to start collecting this information is to set up separate folders in your email package. You can then, through the use of filters, automatically put each response in a folder depending on its "subject".  If you don't have software that can do this, you really should get it. You can download a free copy at: http://adv-marketing.com/business/frtest.htm - Click on "Freebies".

Eudora is probably one of the best email clients you can get. While it does take a little time to discover all its features, it is a very desirable package for someone in business.

Once you determine which ads are pulling, stay with them.  A common mistake some people make is to constantly change their ads, because they feel they are getting stale.  Don't forget, it takes 5 to 7 exposures to an ad before someone may respond.  If you are constantly changing your ads, you are basically starting over each time.

If you are finding it to be a "struggle" to work your business, the worst thing you can do is to give a "half-hearted" effort”. You won't really be giving it, or your clients the attention they need.  Many times, the best thing to do is to take a break.  Take a few days or a week off.  It will pay dividends as when you resume, you will have a renewed enthusiasm.

In The News

New Orleans Announces Wi-Fi Network

City officials from New Orleans have announced plans to deploy a wireless network covering the entire city by the end of 2006. The network will provide improved communication for city services, including fire and police departments, and--the city hopes--will draw residents and businesses back to the city following this year's disastrous hurricane season.

When complete, the network will provide free Internet access to anyone in the city. Unlike several other municipal networks under development, the New Orleans network will be installed and operated by the city itself. Still, city officials must grapple with a state law that restricts Internet access speeds on municipal networks. Unless the city is able to change the law or win an exemption, it will only be allowed to offer transfer speeds of 144 Kbps.

Representatives of cable and phone companies that offer Internet access have argued that cities should not be allowed to offer services that compete with services from private companies. City officials reject that notion, arguing that commercial Internet access is too expensive and inconvenient for many potential users.

Is There Really Anything New In Internet Marketing?
by Robert Taylor

Let's examine this question very closely.  In my many journeys through the labyrinth known as the "Internet" I have found certain principles of Internet Marketing which have stood the test of time.

Consider the following areas of Internet Marketing:

1.  Search engine positioning.  Many leaders (I prefer this word to the over-used "gurus") of the Internet marketing industry swear by the power of a high ranking in the search engines.  The statistics show that a great portion of web site traffic is generated by search engines. What they don't show is that getting a top-ten ranking is roughly equivalent to winning a lottery.

2.  Web Site Content.  Most seem to agree that content is King.  The content of a web site will make it or break it. The basics for what constitutes good or excellent content have not changed in the time I have been on the Internet.

3.  Web Site Design.  Flash and glitter had a great surge, however customer preferences put a rapid end to that.  We have returned to the basics - a simple site with easy navigation, great content and quick loading.

4.  Advertising Copy (Copywriting).  Those principles are virtually unchanged.  The AIDA (attention, interest, desire and action) concept still rules.

5.  Free Advertising in Ezines and Opt-In Lists.  As little as a year ago these were profitable venues for advertising. Enough people read your ads that you obtained good responses.  Free advertising in ezines and opt-in lists is drawing less results.  On the other hand, paid ads in reputable ezines do get results.

6.  Free Ebooks.  Most of the original free ebooks had valuable content and people were willing to pass them on to others.  This has reversed to the point there is little of value in a lot of the free ebooks on the Internet and people have become wary of wasting their time downloading them.

7.  Viral Marketing.  The first outright example I saw of this was when Terry Dean came out with a simple form which allowed you to post your URL/business opportunity at the top of a form which contained links to six others.  This has evolved into massive FFAs, link exchanges, direct email exchanges, and others I am unable to recall at the moment. Once again, the effectiveness has been destroyed by the sheer immensity of it.

8.  Products/Services.  There are less than 50 products/services which have continued to prove their worth. Most of the rest are basically copied from those originals. It would not be too far-fetched to say that over 90% of the original information is as valid today as it was a year ago.

How can you and I take advantage of the fact that though things appear to be changing rapidly on the Internet, in reality little has in fact changed?

1.  Develop your web site and submit it properly to the search engines and directories.  You can spend great amounts of time trying to achieve a top ten ranking on the search engines and directories and still not get the desired results.  Much of this time can be better used in other methods of promoting your business.

2.  Web site design, content and advertising.  There are tried and true Internet marketing programs which will provide you with sufficient information to handle these areas.  I have several favorite programs which I use, but suggest you do your own investigation of available programs. The proven programs are normally, but not always, those you frequently encounter on the Internet.

3.  Free advertising can be effective if you have a great ad that stands out from all the others.  A poor or mediocre ad will be buried among all the other ads and draw little response.  A great way to get very effective free advertising is to write articles and have them published in ezines.  Believe me, you don't have to be a rocket scientist to write a good article.

The odds are that you and I will not come up with anything earth-shakingly new.  We may well improve and enhance some of these techniques which have proven themselves.  We can and should always seek ways to improve the tools provided us.  Hopefully some of the above comments will get you started thinking of better ways to accomplish your goals on the Internet.  There is always room for improvement.

I wish you great success on the Internet in any capacity you have chosen!  Persist!

Trivia

In 1982, its inaugural year, The Weather Channel lost $10.6 million, and came dangerously close to being shut down. In fact, the network didn't make any money until 1985. Since then, The Weather Channel has steadily grown to where it is now seen in more than 67 million homes, or 98 percent of homes with cable television.

Biz-Tips

Finding a Niche That REALLY Wants What You Sell.

One of the quickest ways to make a business successful is to focus on a small group of people who REALLY want a product or service. Because they aren’t the biggest group of customers, the specialized product or service probably isn’t going to be available at Walmart.

In fact, many of the customers in your group may not know where they can get what they want. When you show up, specializing in satisfying their demands and giving these customers exactly what they’ve had such a hard time finding, you get an enthusiastic group of long term buyers.

Let me give you an example. I recently spent a few days in Southwest Texas. It’s deep in the heart of ranch country. Men and boys still wear cowboy hats just as they have for 150 years. It’s not the largest group in the world, but these guys really WANT their cowboy hats.

Cory and Victoria noticed that it was hard to find a store that stocked many cowboy hats. Their solution was to open an entire store specializing in them. You can get any kind of hat, styled any way, for any sized head.

For many customers their store is regarded as an answer to a prayer. “This is the first time in 25 years that I’ve worn a hat that fits my head right,” one customer told me.

Next, Cory and Victoria are putting their store on the Internet. What better way to reach a narrow group of customers, spread out over the world, who REALLY want their product.

A Little Humor to Start the Week

New Glasses
=-=-=-=-=-=

A woman walks in a store to return a pair of eyeglasses that she had purchased for her husband a week before.

"What seems to be the problem, madam?"

"I'm returning these glasses I bought for my husband. He's still not seeing things my way."

-----

The newly-married husband came home from the office to find his young wife in floods of tears. "Darling, whatever is the matter?" he asks.

"Sweetheart," she sobs, "the most terrible thing has happened! I cooked my very first Beef Bourguignon for you, and I got it out the oven to season it, and the phone rang. When I came back from answering the phone," she sobbed again, "I found that the cat had eaten it!"

"Don't worry, darling," said her husband. "Don't cry. We'll get a new cat in the morning..."

-----

While I was employed by a private corporation and assigned to the space-shuttle program, my job included ordering supplies. One of the engineers asked me to get a new dictionary for him. The request form said, "State reason this item is needed," so I asked him why he wanted one.

I expected his answer would be "My old copy is lost" or "The cover is falling off." Instead he replied, "My edition defines spaceship as an 'imaginary aircraft.'"

He got his new dictionary.

-----

A family had spent the day moving from their farmhouse into a brand new house in a development nearby.

Very early the next morning, their 3 year-old son ran in to the parent's bedroom to wake them up.

The mother dressed him and told him to play in the yard.

About 20 minutes later, he came running back.

"Mommy, Mommy," he exclaimed, "Everybody has doorbells - and they all work!"

Thea – Sure – a number of people include our entire publication on their web sites.  This is a great bonus for our advertisers who are getting all this additional coverage at no cost.

Bob

Answer to Riddle

24 bales. There are twice as many horses eating for twice as many days, so they will eat 4 times as much hay.
