Holiday Scams
by Bob OsgoodbyI got a phone call the other day from a Sergeant Harris who said he was calling from the Police Department. He said he was soliciting funds for the PBA (Police Benevolent Association) to buy gifts for needy children. Now most of us know that the PBA is a reputable organization, and provides great support for our Law Enforcement Employees.
Something just didn’t ring true however, so I told him I couldn’t talk as I was busy, but to call back later. I then called our local Police Department and asked if this was on the up and up. I found out that there is no Sergeant Harris in our Police Department, and there was no fund raising activity taking place at that time. He never called back.
This is just one of the many scams being perpetrated and I thought it might be appropriate to review some of the others we face every day on the Internet. Con artists have gone high-tech and are using the Internet to defraud consumers in a variety of clever ways.
Internet Auctions allow you to shop in a "virtual marketplace" that offers a huge selection of products at great deals. It has been reported by some, that after sending their money, they've received an item that is less valuable than promised or, worse yet, nothing at all. When bidding through an Internet auction, particularly for a valuable item, check out the seller and insist on paying with a credit card or using an escrow service – never send cash or a personal check.
Internet Access Services and Long Distance Service Providers may send you a check, and this is prevalent during Holiday Season when folks could use a few extra dollars. But be careful, you might be "trapped" into a long-term contract for Internet access or phone service, with big penalties for cancellation or early termination. If a check arrives at your home or business, read both sides carefully and look inside the envelope to find the conditions you're agreeing to if you cash the check.
Web Crammers promise a free custom-designed website for a 30-day trial period, with no obligation to continue, and Internet Service Providers might promise free Internet Access for a trial period. Beware that you may be charged for the service after the trial period, even if you asked to be removed from their program. You should review your telephone and credit card bills to be sure you are not being charged.
M-L-M Scams and Pyramids have been around a long time. They promise that you can make money through the products and services you sell, as well as those sold by the people you recruit into the program. Many have found that after they've bought into a plan or programs, that in reality, their customers are other distributors, and not the general public. Some programs are actually illegal pyramid schemes. When products or services are sold only to distributors like yourself, there's no way to make money. You should avoid plans that require you to recruit distributors, buy expensive inventory or commit to a minimum sales volume.
Travel and Vacation plans offer a luxurious trip with lots of "extras" at a bargain-basement price. Some companies however, deliver lower-quality accommodations and services than they've advertised or no trip at all. Others have been hit with hidden charges or additional requirements after they've paid. You should always get references on any travel company you're planning to do business with. Then, get details of the trip in writing, including the cancellation policy, before signing on. Many of these cruise ships are of foreign registry, and you may not have legal recourse if they don’t deliver.
Business Opportunities - Be your own boss and earn big bucks. Most of these make extravagant offers, and if it sounds too good to be true, it most likely is. The same applies to investing in a day trading system or service that promises huge earnings. Big profits always mean big risk. Programs that claim to be able to predict the market with 100 percent accuracy should simply be avoided.
Be wary of extravagant claims about performance or earnings potential. Get all promises in writing and review them carefully before making a payment or signing a contract.Read the fine print and all relevant links. Fraudulent promoters sometimes bury the disclosures they're not anxious to share, by putting them in tiny type or in a place where you're unlikely see them. Look for a privacy policy. If you don't see one - or if you can't understand it - consider taking your business elsewhere. Be skeptical of any company that doesn't clearly state its name, street address and telephone number.
Can you avoid getting caught by a scam artist working the web? Not always. But prudence and due diligence usually pays.

In The News
FCC Chair Pushes New Internet Phone Tax
Chairman Kevin Martin said that imposing new taxes on more Internet phone users will probably be a priority next year for the FCC.
The issue arose with regard to the Universal Service Fund (USF), which subsidizes services in rural and other high-cost areas, schools, and libraries. Long-distance, pay, wireless, and regular telephone services pay into the fund. Not determined are how such taxes will affect voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) providers and other telecommunications services.
Some of the companies that provide VoIP services already contribute to the USF, but no regulations require such participation. "We need to move to collection for the Universal Service Fund that is technology-neutral," said Martin. Congress also is expected to address changes to universal service reform in 2006.

Are You Chasing the Right Dream?
by Dr Jill Ammon-Wexler"The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind."
~~ William James, famed psychologistAchieving certain dreams often requires FAR LESS WORK than achieving other, seemingly easier goals.
Why is that so?
Because it is much, much harder to work for a goal we do not passionately desire. But when you manage to get yourself focused on what is naturally of passionate interest to you -- your work becomes play!
**Are Your Goals a "Good Fit?"
Hopefully you've invested some thought clarifying your life goals ... and you know exactly what you want. So why not take a few minutes to ask yourself an important question -- am I pursuing the right goal for ME?Here’s why that is so important: You'll never really achieve your true potential as long as you pour your energy into something that doesn’t really fit your true passions and interests! Does that seem too simple?
Think about that for a moment. It’s unfortunately very easy to automatically adopt someone else’s goal. We were trained to do that very thing as children.
Ninety-nine percent of us were fully expected to achieve the goals our parents and educational system set out for us. Some of us gave in and tried to do so. Some of us rebelled and learned to fail instead. And some of us felt somehow inadequate because we did not have the natural interest and/or aptitude to do what we were expected to do.
If you find you never seem to achieve your goals, you may be setting goals you don't really desire or believe in for yourself.
This is never going to lead to success. What it will lead to is one false start after another - and a tendency to want to quit after the first bump in the road.
This is a major dead-end, and will do nothing but gradually erode your self confidence.
**Ask Yourself This...
You need to be sure your goal really is YOUR goal for YOUR life. If you feel resistance, take a serious look at that. Ask yourself who you might really be setting that goal for?
Then ask yourself if you really have a burning passion for that goal, and are willing to butt heads with as many so-called failures as necessary to achieve it.
If your answer is no - this may be a good time to revisit your goal setting exercise.
**Selecting an Appropriate Goal
Three things will happen if you make the effort to refocus yourself around a goal that is more in keeping with your natural talents and passions:
--First, you will be happier, less stressed, and far more productive.
--Second, you will be far more likely to hang in as you hit those jarring bumps in the road.
--And third, there is a higher probability you will achieve a level of excellence at what you’re doing. This increases your "value" -- thereby increasing your potential for increased return on your efforts. So put your goal to the test. Does it truly "measure up" to your innermost desires?
**Achieve it!
The secrets of goal achievement are actually quite clear cut:
--Have burning passion for what is desired,
--Set a clear and exact goal to get it,
--Make an absolute commitment to achieve the goal,
--Be willing to pay the price for achieving it, and
--Commit to focused action, focused action and more focused action!**Action Point...
Now ... ask yourself this question: Is 2006 going to be any different than 2005? How? And what do I have to do NOW to make next year more of what I want? Are YOU motivated to improve your probability of achieving your goals in 2006 -- and become a whole lot happier and successful? =>

Trivia
Antarctica is 98% ice, 2% barren rock. The average thickness of the ice sheet is 7,200 feet; this amounts to 90% of all the ice and 70% of all the fresh water in the world. If the ice cap were to melt, the sea level would rise by an average of 230 feet.

Biz-Tips
by Kevin NunleyTwo Biggest Marketing Boo-Boos
There are two things that will sink your marketing and advertising almost every time. More often than not, when someone says "my ads didn't work," one of these two boo-boos are to blame.
Marketing that isn't targeted to a specific kind of customer doesn't work (unless you have LOTS of budget). Big companies can blanket radio, TV, and magazines with million dollar ad budgets. They know they will catch their best customers somewhere in the crowd.
The rest of us have to first find our best customers, figure out what media they use, and tightly target our advertising to reach those best customers.
The second major marketing boo-boo is so simple you may not believe it. Most marketing fails because people didn't understand it. The message was too clever, too technical, intended for a different audience, too long, or in an e-zine they couldn't figure out how to read.
Once when I was working in radio, I jumped on the air and announced the first caller would get tickets to see the Rolling Stones. My tongue got tied and I mumbled my way through the announcement. No one called, not a single person. A few minutes later I read the announcement again, this time speaking clearly. The phone rang off the wall.

A Little Humor to Start the Week
No Place Like Home
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=While I was dining out with my children, a man came over to our table, and we started talking.
He asked where my kids go to school. I told him we home-schooled them.
With a raised eyebrow, he asked if my husband is the sole breadwinner for our family.
I said, "No, I also work ... out of our home."
Then, noticing our two-month-old son, he mentioned that his daughter had just had a baby, and he wondered what hospital our son was born in.
"He was born at home," I answered.
The man looked at me, then said, "Wow, you don't get out much, do you?"
-----
Helping me sort clothes into "save" and "give away" piles, my six-year-old daughter came across a garter belt. "What's this?" she asked.
"It's a garter belt," I said. Seeing that meant nothing to her, I added, "It's for holding up stockings."
"Ah," she said, carefully placing it in the "save" pile, "we'll use it next Christmas Eve."
-----
I stopped at a florist shop after work to pick up roses for my wife. As the clerk was putting the finishing touches on the bouquet, a young man burst through the door, breathlessly requesting a dozen red roses.
"I'm sorry," the clerk said. "This man just ordered our last bunch." The desperate customer turned to me and begged, "May I please have those roses?"
"What happened?" I asked. "Did you forget your wedding anniversary?"
"It's even worse than that," he confided. "I broke my wife's hard drive!"
-----
When I had a job at the photo-developing counter of a pharmacy, the film was sometimes developed incorrectly. If this occurred, we did not charge our customers. Once a man came to pick up his pictures, which were marked $0.00, indicating that not one of them had turned out right.
The customer asked to see the photos, and when I noticed the odd splotches of color all over the pictures, I apologized profusely.
"Oh, no, these are fine," he said happily. "I'm a microbiologist, and these are my bacteria cultures."

Something to Think About
By Jan TincherDo you give because you have to?
Do you give to others at your own expense?
Why?
Why not give what you can, when you can, consistently? It gives you a base, a sense of connection with people. You gain a sense of pride and self-esteem that no amount of money could ever give. Release the pressure. Give because you want to, on a consistent basis.
