What a Waste
by Bob Osgoodby

We see literally hundreds of ads every week that arrive by email, are published in Ezines we subscribe to, or possibly banner ads on web sites. Most of them are not even read, and are simply a waste of time and money. Every now and then however, one does get our attention and we visit their web site, or request further information by email. Face it - if we didn't fall for the old Credit Repair Scam the first time we saw it, the odds are we won't now. Sending the same or similar messages every day will get them automatically filtered out or simply deleted.

While email marketing may well be a viable marketing tool, until it is brought under control, it has a long way to go. About 90% of the unsolicited offers received are simply out and out scams. Many people don't mind receiving offers via email, but many others place spam in the same genre as the telemarketer that always calls just as you sit down for dinner.

Predictable subject lines are usually the give away. I really do know if I asked for information about something, and when I didn't and receive one that says "Here is the Information You Requested", it immediately hits the circular bin. The same holds true for deliberately misspelled words that try to help avoid the spam filters. Some people who receive large amounts of spam, have made the automatic deletion of spam into an art form.

While banner ads are heavily hyped they are easily ignored. I personally can't remember the last time I did click on one, but from the consumer's perspective, they are a step above the email spam. At least the advertiser is giving you the option to go to their web site or not. There is a variation however that fits into the "pain in the neck" variety. These are the "pop-up" ads that appear when you are at a web site. You then have to close the window that pops up, before you can continue viewing the site. When this starts to happen, I normally close both.

Ezine advertising is another form, but that can also be misused. If I subscribe to a publication, I don't mind seeing ads as that is the financial support required to meet the expenses of the publication. Thinly disguised articles however, which are actually ads and have little or no content are a misuse, and fall into the spam category.

If you are considering advertising in a publication, how do they group their ads. If they are in a separate mailing with the content in "Part 1" and the ads in "Part 2" you are probably wasting your money. People quickly scan "Part 1" for the content and then delete "Part 2" without even opening it. If there are multiple ads in a row, one after the other, you are also probably wasting your money as people tend to simply skip past them.

OK - let's say you find an Ezine that does it correctly, you must have an ad that gets the readers attention. This takes time to develop and usually your best bet is to test several ads in the same publication, and track the response rate. It doesn't normally pay to compare response rates in different publications with different ads in each. The demographics of the subscribers are different and what may pull in one, may not in another.

How do you track the response rate? Well, there are basically three ways that this can be done. The easiest way is to use a different email address for each ad. Anything you receive at that address, came from a specific ad. Shy away from free email addresses such as “Hotmail” as potential customers tend to be leery of people that use them.

If you only have one email address to track them, you can use a specialized address such as: mailto:marty@abc.com?subject=YB with a different subject for each ad.

Another way, if you own your own web site is to have a different "home page" for each ad you wish to track. These are basically "mirror" pages with a different URL - any hits you receive there came from a specific ad.

Once you find an ad that works in one publication, stick with it and also try it in another. Before you know it, you will have an ad program that is not a waste of time and money, and just may work.

In The News

FTC Says Can-Spam Working

The Federal Trade Commission reported to Congress on the effectiveness of the CAN-SPAM Act, concluding that legal action against spammers and improved e-mail filtering have reduced the amount of junk e-mail reaching consumers.

The agency has filed 21 lawsuits under CAN-SPAM. Recommendations include passing new laws to help regulators trace spammers and sellers outside the United States, better user education on spam prevention, and continued improvement in filtering tools and techniques.

Keep Your Standards High
by Sandy Karn

The word "standard" has a number of meanings, two of which come together in an interesting way for each individual:

1) A distinctive flag, banner, or ensign of a person, group, or organization.

2) An acknowledged measure of comparison of value; behavior that is a gauge of self-control.

Each of us, especially a businessperson or professional, needs to raise our personal standard in the community and marketplace in order to be successful. We tend to utilize a variety of advertising and promotional techniques, however the one element that has the greatest impact on our reputation in the community and the marketplace are our personal standards of behavior.

You already have a set of personal and professional standards that are reflected in everything you do. Are these standards high enough to give you the reputation in the community and the marketplace that you desire?

Take time to examine your standards and determine which ones need to be raised. Some of your standards may be too high or at least too rigid to be realistic. Also make sure your standards are consistent with your values, otherwise they will be nothing but a burden to you.

You need to set your own personal standards for the way you treat yourself and others. Both are important since you cannot be your best for others unless you take good care of yourself. So set standards for your appearance, work ethic, health (physical, mental, and spiritual), recreation, personal growth, etc. Then set standards for the way you treat others such as integrity, respect, courtesy, honesty, punctuality, etc.

Once you have determined the standards you want in place at this time in your life, it's important to put in place some systems and procedures that will support these standards and ensure that you will adhere to them consistently.

Your goal:

To develop and maintain consistently high personal and professional standards.

The result:

You will develop a strong reputation in the community and the marketplace and you will experience a greater sense of self-respect and self-esteem.

Your assignment:

Evaluate the key standards for your personal and professional life. Be sure they are consistent with your needs and values, then set them high enough to give you the reputation you desire. Once you have reaffirmed them, be sure to put in place the necessary systems and procedures to ensure that you will adhere to them consistently.

Wishing You the Very Best!

Biz-Tips

Build Confidence Online

One of the most important factors in doing business online is to get customers to trust you. Studies show that many North Americans are still shy about placing an order online. Do everything you can to set their fears at ease.

Put your photo (or a photo of your building, employees, even your computer) on your opening page. This helps people feel like they know you.

Include your name and contact info on every page. Many won't order from a site that doesn't list a telephone number or physical address.

Use plenty of testimonials from satisfied customers. You'll find sales jump when you put a testimonial on your order page to reassure buyers just before they finalize their purchase.

A Little Humor to Start the Week

New Light Switch
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

My husband decided life would be easier if he wired a new light switch in the master bedroom to save us from fumbling in the dark for the lamp. He cut through the drywall and found a stash of bottles and small boxes inside the wall.

"Honey!" he called excitedly. "You've got to come here and see what I found."

I ran in and quickly realized that his next task would be to fix the hole that now led into the back of our medicine cabinet.

Soon after our high-tech company moved into a new building, we had trouble with the elevators. A manager got stuck between floors and, after some door banging, finally attracted attention. His name was taken and rescue promised.

It took two hours before the elevator mechanic arrived and got the manager out. When he returned to his desk, he found this note from his efficient secretary: "The elevator people called and will be here in two hours."

-----

A woman walks in a store to return a pair of eyeglasses that she had purchased for her husband a week before.

"What seems to be the problem, madam?"

"I'm returning these glasses I bought for my husband. He's still not seeing things my way."

-----

The new school librarian decided that instead of checking out children's books by writing the names of borrowers on the book cards herself, she would have the youngsters sign their own names. She would then tell them they were signing a "Contract" for returning the books on time.

Her first customer was a second grader, who looked surprised to see a new librarian. He brought four books to the desk and shoved them across to the librarian, giving her his name as he did so.

The librarian pushed the books back and told him to sign them out. The boy laboriously printed his name on each book card and then handed them to her with a look of utter disgust.

Before the librarian could even start her speech he said, scornfully, "The other Librarian we had could write."

Feedback - Q&A

Bob – I placed a sponsor ad in your “Tip of the Day” publication.  I received a notice from the credit card company that you were paid, and I also received a confirmation from you that you received the ad. How do I know when the ad will start? I also see that you have ads listed under publications of interest. How does someone get an ad there?

Meryl

-----

Merle – yes your ad was received and you will have the next available opening.  If you look at the bottom of each ad, there is an expiration date listed. Yours will start the week after the ad expires. The ads under “Publications of Interest” are actually ads swapped with another ezine or newsletter. I publish their ad and they in turn publish mine. If you publish, send me your ad and the number of subscribers you have and when I publish it, I will notify you and send you mine.

Bob

Something to Think About
By Jan Tincher

You can usually have everything you want if you KNOW what it is that you want, and then you do the same thing others have done to achieve it.

Sounds simple, doesn't it?

It is. If you get rid of your doubts and have faith in yourself to accomplish what you set out to, you can do it. Your subconscious will move you forward or hold you back, depending on how you have programmed -- and continue to program -- it.
