The Sow’s Ear
by Bob OsgoodbyThere are so many opportunities being presented on the web, it is difficult to distinguish between them. Some are the proverbial "silk purse", and others are the "sow’s ear". How do you tell the difference?
You have to be very careful on the Internet. There are many legitimate deals, but there are many unethical people also. Don't be misled by anything that guarantees riches for very little work. If you have a good product and market it well, you can make an excellent income and maybe even become wealthy.
When you first get interested in an opportunity however, before “jumping in with both feet", step back a bit and take a hard look at it. There are danger signs that some have, and if you see them, it is possible you should simply walk on by.
Probably the number one danger sign is the promise of huge wealth in a short period of time with little or no effort on your part. Another serious danger sign is the lack of contact information. If all you have is a form to fill out on a web site, and no contact methods, this should definitely be avoided. A legitimate company will give a physical address, a phone number, and have an email address you can write to.
Never send cash or a money order, as you have little if any recourse if they don't deliver. Don't think that writing a check is safe either, as they always cash or deposit the check before providing you anything. This is the prudent thing for any vendor to do, as it prevents cheats from taking advantage of them.
Your absolute best bet is to pay for online purchases with a credit card. If the company does not deliver, you can dispute the payment and have the charge reversed. If a company does not accept credit-cards, but did in the past, it is almost always an indication that victims are beginning to charge back their program membership, and "product" purchases on their credit-cards. This is a major danger sign as very likely they have lost their vendor status with the credit card companies, due to the volume of their charge backs.
If the seller won't, or like a private individual, can't accept credit-cards, consider using an escrow service. Escrow services are another good payment option. For a small fee, an escrow service holds the buyer's payment and forwards it to the seller upon the buyer's receipt and approval of the item within an agreed upon inspection period. For buyers, escrow services can help ensure that they get what they pay for.
Sellers may find escrow services less expensive than participating in the credit card payment system, especially if the buyer pays the fee, and they avoid the problems of bad checks or stolen credit-cards. If you use one, ensure that the service is licensed and bonded, and how you can confirm that with the appropriate agency. If you have been defrauded, contact the National Fraud Information Center at 1-800-876-7060 - http://www.fraud.org/
For the sixth year in a row, identity theft topped the list of complaints, accounting for 39 percent of the consumer fraud complaints filed with the FTC. Credit card fraud was the most common form of reported identity theft, followed by phone or utilities fraud, bank fraud, and employment fraud. Never provide your credit card information before doing some due diligence research on the Company. Web sites are still the most common way that consumers are solicited for fraudulent Internet offers, but the statistics reveal an increase in the number of initial contacts made by con artists using email.
In addition to identity theft, the other top categories of consumer fraud complaints include:
* Internet Auctions
* Over the Counter Stock (Penny Stocks)
* Shop-at-Home/Catalog Sales
* Internet Services and Computer Complaints
* Foreign Money Offers
* Prizes/Sweepstakes and Lotteries
* Advance-Fee Loans and Credit Protection
* Business Opportunities and Work-at-Home
* Telephone Services
* Tax Reduction ServicesThere a lot of people trying disguise that "sows ear" to look like a "silk purse", but if you use common sense, you can recognize it for what it is.

In The News
Hybrid Car Buyers to Receive Tax Breaks
Hybrid cars are a good bet for tax breaks in 2006. The new year will bring more savings for buyers of at least 13 gas-electric vehicles, with those showing the most improvement in fuel efficiency securing bigger tax breaks for their new owners. The breaks will come in the form of tax credits, and they range from $3,150 for buyers of the Toyota Prius to $250 for Chevrolet's Silverado pickup truck.
The law previously allowed buyers of one of eight hybrid models in 2005 to qualify for a $2,000 tax deduction from their income taxes. That would come out to about $700 for people in the 35 percent tax bracket, and less for those in lower brackets. A few months after a car maker has sold 60,000 hybrid vehicles, the tax credit begins phasing out, reducing the chance buyers late in the year will get the same break as those who buy in January or February.

How To Get Instant Cash For Your Business
By Kalinda Rose StevensonWhat is the biggest problem facing business owners? It's simple. Not enough money. Money is the lifeblood of business. The goal of creating a business is to make money, but before you actually make money, you need to spend money.
You need to spend money to get started. Depending on your business, your start-up costs can range from minimal to enormous. An internet business doesn't take much to get started. A brick and mortar business requires substantial capital investment. Buying a franchise can cost tens of thousands of dollars. Whatever your business, you need money to get started. Most businesses start out undercapitalized and never catch up.
You also need money to run the business. "The cost of doing business" is more than a phrase. It is a harsh reality. You have to pay for facilities, personnel, sales, marketing, advertising, supplies, licenses, taxes, fees, and myriad of other expenses. Most businesses start out anemic and end up bleeding to death. There is simply not enough money to create a profitable business.
So what do you do? You can apply for bank loans and venture capital. You can borrow money from friends and relatives. You can use your own money. Each of these methods has advantages and disadvantages.
One of the easiest and most effective ways to get money is to use cash advances on credit cards. Yes, the interest rates and fees are high. But it all becomes a matter of economics. If a cash advance keeps you in business, it buys you time to create a profitable business.
How do you get lines of credit on credit cards? One of the most important business decisions you can make is to set up a business structure that will allow you to build business credit.
One option is to do business as a sole proprietor. This is a truly risky proposition, since you are mixing your personal and business finances. Under a DBA business structure, you cannot build corporate credit apart from your own personal credit. A failure in the business means a failure in your personal financial life.
A second option is to set up your business as an LLC, with income and expenses offsetting your personal taxes. One great disadvantage of the LLC structure is that you cannot build corporate credit to an LLC because the LLC is simply an extension of your own personal credit.
A third option is to do business under a C corporation. The huge benefit to having a C corporation is that you can use the federal tax ID of your C corporation to build corporate credit apart from your personal credit.
One of the reasons people are scared off by C corporations is that they think they will be liable to double taxation. In reality, a C corporation pays taxes only when it is profitable, and even the IRS acknowledges that double taxation rarely occurs.
With lines of credit on corporate credit cards, which are completely separate from your own personal credit, you have immediate access to money when you need it. The borrowed money buys you time to create a profitable business.
Another great advantage of using lines of credit to finance your business is that borrowed money is not taxable. You can build your business, with borrowed money, and write off the interest and fees as expenses. This is yet another tax benefit available to corporations. Although you cannot deduct interest on consumer credit cards on the personal tax return, you can deduct the cost of business credit card interest and fees on the corporate tax return. With corporate credit, borrowing money becomes a deductible cost of doing business.
Will the borrowed money cost you money? Sure, cash advances on credit cards cost money. But the real question is not how much does the money cost, but how much does the borrowed money allow you to make?

Trivia
The celebration of the new year is the oldest of all holidays. It was first observed in ancient Babylon about 4000 years ago. In the years around 2000 BC, the Babylonian New Year began with the first New Moon (actually the first visible crescent) after the Vernal Equinox (first day of spring).

Biz-Tips
by Kevin NunleyToll Free Number or Regular Number
A toll free number can pull in lots of prospects and customers for you. Many folks are impressed that you are big enough and care enough to offer them a toll free way to reach you. If there are several businesses listed, most people will first call the business with a toll free number.
The price of long distance calling has been dropping for years. I recently asked several small businesses how much they paid each month for their toll free lines and the answers were surprisingly low. There are even programs where you can get your toll free number at no-charge if you refer new customers to the phone company.
On the other hand, you many NOT want a toll free number. You may want to cut down on all the calls you get and spend more time with really serious customers who are ready to buy.
A regular number can help weed out people who aren't really interested. I've found that people who want free information call my toll free number, but customers who want to place an order NOW tend to call the regular number.
Toll free or regular number--the one you choose to use most depends on what kind of prospects you are looking for.

A Little Humor to Start the Week
Obey
=-=-=Ken and Marjorie finished their breakfast at the retirement home and were relaxing in the library. "You know," said Marjorie "today, in most marriage ceremonies, they don't use the word 'obey' anymore."
"Too bad, isn't it?" retorted Ken. "It used to lend a little humor to the occasion."

"I hope you didn't take it personally, Reverend," an embarrassed woman said after a church service, "when my husband walked out during your sermon."
"I did find it rather disconcerting," the preacher replied.
"It's not a reflection on you, sir," insisted the churchgoer. "Ralph has been walking in his sleep ever since he was a child."

Kathryn's 5-year-old developed a strong interest in spelling once she learned to spell STOP. After that, she tried to figure out her own words. From the back seat of the car she'd ask, "Mom, what does FGRPL spell?"
"Nothing," Kathryn said.
Sitting at breakfast she'd suddenly ask, "Mom, what does DOEB spell?"
"Nothing," Kathryn answered.
This went on for several weeks. Then one afternoon as they sat coloring in her room she asked, "Mom, what does LMDZ spell?"
Kathryn smiled at her and said, "Nothing, sweetheart."
The 5-year-old carefully set down her crayon, sighed and said, "Boy, there sure are a lot of ways to spell Nothing!"

My friend, the manager of a grocery store, nabbed a shoplifter in the act. He was escorting the suspect to the office in the front of the store (near the cash registers), when the shoplifter broke from his grip and tried to run.
After a scuffle, my friend pinned him against the wall and looked up to see a number of surprised customers staring at him.
"Everything's fine, folks," he reassured them. "This guy just tried to go through the express line with more than ten items."

Imagine John, a party magician, is carrying three pieces of gold each piece weighing one kilogram. While taking a walk he comes to a bridge which has a sign posted saying the bridge could hold only a maximum of 80 kilograms. John weighs 78 kilograms and the gold weighs three kilograms. John reads the sign and still safely crossed the bridge with all the gold. How did he manage this?

Something to Think About
By Jan TincherDo you like what you're doing?
What if you don't, but you have to do it?
Well, you don't HAVE to *not* like it. For some reason, you just don't. So how about if you decided to try to like what you're doing? Do you think you could? Great! Keep reading and you'll learn how.
Look at the picture you've made in your mind about the work you are doing. How far away from you is it? Bring it closer. Closer. Closer. Bring it as close as you can for it to be comfortable. If you bring it too close or put it too far away, it will be uncomfortable or blah. We don't want that. OK. Now, that it's comfortable, give it some color. More. Make it brighter. Play around with it. Now, put some sound in it. Your favorite song, the wind, dogs barking, what people are saying to you, what you are thinking, whatever. (Mine is the song *I Am Woman*) Now, if you want to put a scent in it, one that makes you feel in control, do that. Now, put some movement in it. Maybe if you're outside, the grass is blowing in the wind. Maybe you are moving. Keep playing with it until you kind of like what you're doing. Then, you know you're on the right track. Now, just for the heck of it, keep playing with the picture until you find you *really* like what you are doing.
What a concept, huh?
Now, is there any reason you can't like what you do? Isn't it great, being in charge of your mind?
