Something of Interest
by Bob OsgoodbyStudies show that you have less than five seconds to get the attention of a reader. Think about your daily newspaper. Most people scan the paper. If the headline gets their attention, they will probably read the rest of the article. If it doesn't, they probably skip over that story, and continue scanning until they see something of interest.
The first thing that should be seen is your headline. If you look at your Newspaper, the headlines are usually short, in a larger type, bold print, and give a good idea as to what the article is all about.
The same holds true when writing an advertisement. If your headline is weak, your ad probably won't get read. Your headline can make or break your ad campaign.
Probably the most difficult copy to write is for a classified ad. You only have five or six lines to get your message across including your headline. If you can put your headline in bold print, that will make it stand out. If you can't, consider adding special characters such as - ## your headline ##. We are conditioned to read letters and numbers, but not special characters. This will help your headline to stand out.
Another trick is to use white space. A headline that is centered on the first line of the ad is more noticeable than one that is buried in the rest of the text. If your headline is short (3 or 4 words) consider using ALL CAPS. Notice I said - consider. Never put your entire ad in all caps as we are not conditioned to read something written that way. Also, many people take offense to something written in all caps. That is considered as SHOUTING, at least on the Internet.
So how do you develop an effective headline?
First - write your ad. Make it as long as you want, and make sure you get all of your ideas included. Then, without mercy, cut it to about 5 lines of 65 characters per line. "But", you might say, "I can't get all of my points across in something that short". Face it - you are not trying to sell your entire program with this one ad. You are however, trying to get someone's attention. If they respond, you can send them all the follow-up information necessary.
After you have your ad written, then try to develop some catchy headlines. Keep them short and try to grab your readers attention. After you have written a few - test, retest and test again. If your ad is in a place that is normally read by your target market, such as an E-zine or Newsletter, you should be able to determine which ads are pulling. You should concentrate this initial advertising in one or two well known publications, so as to keep your costs to a minimum while you are experimenting.
When you find an ad that is working, then you can expand your ad program. In most of the advertising programs available, we see many people competing for the same customer base, with the same product. Good headlines and effective ad copy can increase the responses you receive.
If you convince the reader that it is something of interest to them, you have a better chance of getting their business. Others who are trying to sell basically the same product as you are, but with a "blah" ad, won’t. Remember, if your headline is weak, your ad probably won't get read.

In The News
Microsoft Releases WMF Patch Early
Responding to concerns that the recently disclosed Windows Meta File (WMF) vulnerability presented serious risk, Microsoft has released a patch ahead of the company's monthly patch release date.
Microsoft said that testing of the patch was completed early and that there was "strong customer sentiment that the release should be made available as soon as possible." Some security experts, warning of the threat posed by the flaw, had even encouraged users to install a third-party patch developed by a European programmer. The patch is for Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003; although Microsoft had earlier said the vulnerability also affected Windows 98 and Windows ME, the company now says those operating systems are not affected by the flaw.
With the release, Microsoft acknowledged that the risk to unpatched systems is critical, though it said data indicated that the infection rate from attacks that exploit the weakness was low to moderate so far. Some security experts offered a different characterization of the situation, saying they have identified thousands of Web sites that exploit the flaw.

Insider Tips To Shopping in Europe
by Hans SchermoreA knowledgeable traveler can enjoy European shopping, discovering fantastic things without breaking the bank by the end of the trip. It's not necessarily easy however. Of course some tourist haunts are the worst for shopping, but with a few insider tips to cheap shopping, bargains await you!
-Before departure, do some research and find out how much you can send or bring home without paying hefty tariffs and duties. Also find out if any restrictions are placed on the goods you plan to take home.
-Get you goods in the cities that are renowned for them - go to Florence for leather, Burgundy for wines. Knowing where you intend to visit helps you plan where to get what you want for a decent price. Guides aimed at collectors can be great for finding very specific items that you want to track down.
-Make sure packing is safe and protective before sending purchases for shipping - make use of the insurance for shipped items, or better still use one of your credit cards that offers accidental damage protection. Plan your buying moves carefully and you can save yourself a great deal of disappointment and worry.
-You'll recognize the places that are selling with the tourist in mind - avoid them!. Shops in airports or at railway depots or in those places where all tourists gather will not be offering the same cheap prices that you'll find just a little trek off the tourist trail.
-Don't forget to compare offers just because you're on holiday. Go to a few places and your time and effort will be rewarded.
-Keep questioning. The vendor will be able to help you out too. Make inquiries about tax rules since the majority of countries in Europe refund the VAT (value added tax) to non residents. You have to spend a certain amount and you don't get the refund till you are heading back home, but this tax is usually over ten percent so it's worth the trouble.
-Do as the locals do. Shop at street and flea markets - these places are usually open to bargaining and you can find unique treasures that can't be found at home. Just be patient and you should find a priceless item that will make all your friends back home very jealous!
-It's a waste of time and money to buy stuff you can get at home. Just because you're having the trip of a lifetime in Europe doesn't mean all your spending sense should be thrown out the window. Going home broke isn't going to be a lot of fun.
-Use your sense of the situation to decide if you can bargain. As a rule in the South of Europe bargaining is more regularly practiced than in the North. Some Northern shopkeepers will not take kindly to bargaining! Flea markets in Europe and the world over however are places to haggle to your heart's content. If you settle on a price with a vendor though, you need to know that this is a binding contract - don't try to mess folk about for fun!
-Try to keep the baggage hassle to a minimum by making the bulk of your buys nearer to the end of your trip than the start. A decent idea is to take an additional suitcase in which you will carry your keep sakes. Alternatively budget ahead of time for shipping costs.
More tips and ideas
If you want to have space for mementos but aren't so taken with the idea of carrying an additional case try this - pack one case with clothes that you're either happy to discard after wearing or that you will ship home at small cost.
Finally, the street markets are filled with nice bargains. The best choice is found at the start of the market day, but the biggest savings are likely to be made at the very end of the day!

Biz-Tips
by Kevin NunleyPiggyback For Cheap Ads
One way to get very low-cost advertising is to piggyback your ads onto someone else's. This is a longtime practice in broadcasting, but can be used with any media.
Here is an example: You want to advertise your web site on radio, but don't have the hundreds or thousands it would take to buy your own spots.
There is a computer store in your town that advertises on radio all the time. You offer to cover a small share of their ad costs or trade a service for a mini 10 second ad included at the end of their radio commercial. Check with customers and suppliers who do lots of advertising.
I know a furniture chain that always includes a 5 second mention for the local cable TV company in their commercials. With the huge percentage of small businesses that want to be online but don't know how, you might offer to build them a web site they can promote in their commercials. Of course, the site will include a banner linking visitors to your site.
TV ads can include a graphic for your business or run a crawl (words across the screen). Larger newspaper ads might include a graphic and a few lines of copy for your business.

A Little Humor to Start the Week
Blockbuster Stakeout
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=Without realizing it, I walked right into a police stakeout at my local Blockbuster. When a young man stepped out the door, a group of officers pounced, cuffing him and hustling him into a squad car.
Seeing my astonished frozen expression, one cop came over and said, "When they say the movie is due by noon the next day... they mean it!"

A patient, while recovering in the hospital from a heart attack, met this over-zealous evangelist. After listening politely for over a half-hour on how thankful he should be to have been spared, and how he should repent at once, he was asked if all of his sins had flashed before his eyes during the heart attack.
The patient responded, "Don't be ridiculous. The attack lasted only 6 hours."
-----
The restaurant where I took my two sons for a meal was crowded with fans watching a sporting event on television.
The harried waitress took our order, but more than half an hour passed with no sign of her return.
I was trying to keep my kids from becoming restless when suddenly shouts of victory came from the bar.
"Hey," commented my 11-year-old, "it sounds as if someone just got his food."
-----
Weary of constantly picking clothes up from the floor of her son's room, a mother finally laid down the law. Each item of clothing she had to pick up would cost her son 25 cents.
By the end of the week, he owed her $1.50. She received the money promptly, along with a 50-cent tip and a note that read:
"Thanks, Mom. Keep up the good work!"

-----
Marny – yes I do use a formatting tool, and you can too. You can find it at: http://adv-marketing.com/business/formatter.htm - simply paste your information into the box and select your line length.
