Internet Tip of the Week

For some people, the retirement income they receive, may not be enough to live the life style they wish, so they look about for other ways to generate additional earnings. Many are attracted to the Internet, and some do very well while others do not. Those that do not may get quickly disenchanted, and write the Internet off as just a lot of hype, where you can't earn anything. That's like getting a flat tire in your car, and swearing that the automobile has no future.
Anyone going into business on the Internet, must do several things if they hope to achieve success. Probably the first thing is to recognize and avoid the "get rich quick" schemes, that promise great earnings in a short period of time, with little if any effort on your part. People quickly find their email overflowing with all kinds of offers like this. Everything from illegal chain letters, to money laundering scams that promises you 25 percent of 35 million dollars, start arriving and unfortunately a lot of people bite.
Believing the hype of some affiliate deals, they join a few and quickly find that they don't have to install a bigger mailbox to hold all the payments they thought they’d get. Many of these programs require that you pay a monthly fee to be involved, and the founders are the only ones making money. If someone tells you that you don't have to work, forget about it. Like any other business, if you don't put forth any effort, your chances of success are slim to none.
Even if you do all the right things, like your car, you may get a flat tire along the way. That is not the time to quit. You may experience several failures before finding the right one.
Before "jumping in with both feet" however, examine some of the offers being made on the Internet. The very best way to do this is to subscribe to some online publications and review the ads. Paid ads that appear on a regular basis are a good sign of potentially good opportunities. If the advertisers were not making any money, they wouldn't be spending their hard earned money for them.
While free advertising has its place, it cannot be the only method you use. The old saying "that you have to spend a buck to make a buck" is equally true on the Internet. Consider placing your ad in the ezines or newsletters that have a high repeat rate with their advertisers.
Your ad headline and copy are critical to your success. Don't use the copy supplied by the affiliate program, as those ads get tired very quickly. If necessary, get some professional help in writing your ad. A good ad will pull - a bad or tired ad won't.
Target your ads toward those you think will become a prospect. Millions of ads sent out as unsolicited email (spam) will do little if any good. A well constructed ad in an ezine, targeted to the proper audience, even if they only have a few thousand subscribers, will out pull the spam.
Something as simplistic as being a Amazon.com affiliate can generate income. If you are an expert in your field, and get recognized as one, an affiliate program with Amazon might be the way to go. You may not become wealthy overnight, but as your exposure grows, so will your income.
If you don't have your own web site, forget about it. That's like a merchant without a store trying to do business out of the back of their car. The cost of web space is so low today, that you can't afford not to have one.
If you are a "Snow Bird" who has headed south for the winter, or simply someone wishing to supplement their income, you can achieve success on the web. But it does take work and some common sense. If you don't, it just may be your business that "went south".

Ultra-Clean Power Plant
FuelCell Energy, Inc. a leading manufacturer of efficient electric power plants for commercial and industrial customers, today announced it will supply an ultra-clean power plant that will run on a renewable supply of fuel from dairy-processing waste, generating electricity to run a municipal wastewater treatment plant serving California's San Joaquin Valley region.
Wastewater treatment facilities are an ideal application for Direct Fuel Cell (DFC) power plants based on their ability to operate on anaerobic digester gas, which is classified as a renewable fuel and eligible for government incentive funding at installations around the world. Additionally, because DFC power plants generate electricity without combustion, they dramatically reduce harmful emissions of gas and particulates while generating reliable power right where it is needed.
The 750 kilowatt (kW) power plant, consisting of three DFC units, will be installed in spring 2007 to provide around-the-clock electricity for the wastewater treatment plant. In addition, surplus heat generated from its operation will be used in generating the gas to be used as fuel, thereby substantially boosting the facility's overall energy efficiency.

Cash Flow Problems Don't "Just Happen"
by Philip CampbellYou would be shocked and amazed at the number of businesses that fail because the owner did not see a cash flow problem in time to do something about it.
One thing I want to help you to see is that a cash flow problem can almost always be seen far in advance - far enough in advance to do something about it.
It is a myth (I'm trying to put this as politely as possible) to think that cash flow problems "just happen". Rarely is a cash flow problem a sudden event. It is almost always something that accumulates over a period of time.
And it is not difficult to see it coming.
Joe Frazier, the famous boxer, said this: "The punch that knocks you out is the one you didn't see".
What Joe Frazier was saying is that in boxing, if you see the punch coming, you have a chance to react. You have a chance to get out of the way. You have a chance to at least "roll with the punch".
It's when you don't see the punch coming that you get knocked out.
In business, if you don't see a cash flow problem coming, then you don't see it until the problem has arrived on your doorstep. Most people don't have a good view into what their cash balance is going to be so the problem smacks them on the side of the head without warning.
That's how businesses are ruined.
Even if you believe you will have a cash shortage in the future, you still must see it - in advance. You must see it clearly for what it is, how much it might be, and precisely when it is likely to happen.
Then you can plan in advance exactly what you need to do to head off the punch before it lands on the side of your head.
You can't have the punch show up at the last minute, when you didn't see it coming. This kind of surprise blow will knock you out. It could be the kind of blow that ruins your business.
THE ALL-IMPORTANT CASH FLOW QUESTION
The most important single step you can take to head off a possible cash flow surprise is to ask and answer this very simple question:
What do I expect my cash balance to be six months from now?
Answering this question will force you to "focus forward". It will force you to look at your business in a new and revealing way.
It will pull you out of the past and into the future.
The key to answering this question is having a monthly cash flow projection for your business for at least the next six months. A schedule that shows your projected revenues and expenses in the context of your beginning and ending cash balance for each month.
I can't stress enough how critical this is to really taking control of your business… and your cash flow. It's hard to overstate just how important this is to everything you do in your business.
YOUR FINANCIAL STATEMENTS ARE NOT THE ANSWER
A cash flow projection is very different than the basic financial statements you use to manage your business each month.
The standard financial statements that all businesses use are not adequate for answering this question. Financial statements are always historical, meaning they're always presenting what happened in the past.
They are a bit like the rear view mirror in your automobile. The rear view mirror is very helpful when you need to see what is behind you. However, when you are driving down the highway, your focus needs to be on what's in front of you.
An occasional glance in the rear view mirror is all that's required.
You have to have a good clear view of what's ahead of you in order to get where you are going safely. Look in the rear view mirror for too long and you will soon be crashing into something in front of you.
Cash flow projections provide the visibility you need to avoid cash flow problems.
CREATING PEACE OF MIND
Remember, cash flow problems don't "just happen". They can almost always be seen long before they ever happen. Your job is to know what you expect the cash balance to be six months from now. That way you're in control of your business and your cash flow.
Use cash flow projections to make sure a cash flow problem never catches you by surprise. They will provide you the peace of mind that comes from knowing you have your cash flow under control.
You CANNOT run your business successfully without them.
