Slim To None
by Bob Osgoodby

Many people who live in a colder climate go south during the winter.  Others move there permanently after retirement, and some find it's not all "peaches and cream". Their retirement income may not enough to live the life style they wish, so they look about for other ways to generate additional earnings.

While many do odd jobs, many are attracted to the Internet, and some do very well while others do not.  Those that do not may get quickly disenchanted, and write the Internet off as just a lot of hype, where you can't earn anything. That's like getting a flat tire in your car, and swearing that the automobile has no future.

Anyone going into business on the Internet, must do several things if they hope to achieve success.  Probably the first thing is to recognize and avoid the "get rich quick" schemes, that promise great earnings in a short period of time, with little if any effort on your part.  People quickly find their email overflowing with all kinds of offers like this.  Everything from illegal chain letters, to the Nigerian money laundering scam that promises you 25 percent of 35 million dollars, start arriving and unfortunately a lot of people bite.

Believing the hype of some affiliate deals, they join a few and quickly find that they don't have to install a bigger mailbox to hold all the payments they thought they would get.  Many of these programs require that you pay a monthly fee to be involved, and the founders are the only ones making money. If someone tells you that you don't have to work, forget about it. Like any other business, if you don't put forth any effort, your chances of success are slim to none.

Even if you do all the right things, like your car, you may get a flat tire along the way.  That is not the time to quit.  You may experience several failures before finding the right one.

Before "jumping in with both feet" however, examine some of the offers being made on the Internet.  The very best way to do this is to subscribe to some online publications and review the ads. Paid ads that appear on a regular basis are a good sign of potentially good opportunities.  If the advertisers were not making any money, they wouldn't be spending their hard earned money to run them.

While free advertising has its place, it cannot be the only method you use.  The old saying "that you have to spend a buck to make a buck" is equally true on the Internet. Consider placing your ad in the ezines or newsletters that have a high repeat rate with their advertisers.

Your ad headline and copy are critical to your success.  Don't use the copy supplied by the affiliate program, as many people use them, and those ads get tired very quickly.  If necessary, get some professional help in writing your ad. A good ad will pull - a bad or tired ad won't.

Target your ads toward those you think will become a prospect. Millions of ads sent out as unsolicited email (spam) will do little if any good.  A well constructed ad in an ezine, targeted to the proper audience, even if they only have a few thousand subscribers, will out pull the spam.

Something as simplistic as being an Amazon.com affiliate, can generate income.  If you are an expert in your field, and get recognized as one, an affiliate program with Amazon might be the way to go.  You may not become wealthy overnight, but as your exposure grows, so will your income.

If you don't have your own web site, forget about it.  That's like a merchant without a store trying to do business out of the back of their car. The cost of web space is so low today, that you can't afford not to have one.

If you are retired, or simply someone wishing to supplement their income, you can achieve success on the web. But it does take work and some common sense. If you don't, your chances for success are “slim to none” and it just may be your business that "went south".

Guilty Plea Expected From Michigan Man For Spamming

A Detroit-area man is expected to plead guilty to violations of the CAN-SPAM Act for his part in a spam racket that prosecutors say sent millions of illegal messages over computer systems belonging to Ford, Unisys, the U.S. Army Information Center, and others.

Daniel Lin plead guilty to fraud and other charges in the deal and will face up to two years in prison. Prior to the deal, Lin could have been sentenced to 10 years for his part in the spam scheme. Three other men were also charged in the original complaint in April 2004, which were the first such charges under the federal law to limit spam.

The men reportedly earned about $100,000 from their spam-related activities.

Personal and Professional Development – What’s the Difference?
by Kevin Eikenberry

When people ask me about my business, I tell them I’m in the learning business – that we help organizations, teams and individuals reach their potential through learning. This is a fine statement and it does describe the breadth of what we do, but it often leads to the follow-up question like . . . “Do you do personal development stuff or just business skills training?”

My answer is yes.

Because I don’t believe there is a significant difference between personal development and professional development.

Why do I say that?

The Reasons Why

Since my opinion might differ from yours, or perhaps you’ve never thought about it this, it makes sense to explain myself. There are at least five major reasons why I think personal and professional development are the same thing.

Learning is Learning. We were granted an amazing potential for learning at birth. Most of us haven’t used very much of that potential. It’s like we are mowing our lawn with a jet engine. Sure the jet engine has enough horsepower to turn the blade, but it has virtually unlimited potential that isn’t being used. When we are learning we are increasing our capacity to learn more because we are flexing and exercising our “learning muscles.” In other words whenever we are learning we are increasing our capacity to learn even more.

All Experience Counts. One of the powerful ways that we learn is by connecting new learning to what we already know. As we continue to build our knowledge and experiences, it allows us to make new connections faster. In other words, the more we learn, the more successful we will be at learning new things and in most situations; more quickly with deeper understanding.

We’re a Whole Package. It isn’t like we go to work and don’t use anything we know from our personal life to be more effective professionally. And while we may not need to know how to repair rotating drum equipment at home – those skills might help you diagnose the problem with your washing machine. And even though you don’t have to back up the system database at home, you might be able to deal with your home PC better because of what you learned at work. And while you hope you’ll never need to follow the new Customer Service procedure at home, that procedure might teach you something a following a process, or being more understanding when you are the Customer.

The bottom line is that we are complete humans, and as such we take our entire work knowledge home, and bring all of our personal knowledge and experience to work. So any form of growth or development will benefit you both personally and professionally.

The Most Important Skills are Always the Most Important. Where does being a better listener help you – at home or at work? Both, of course. When you learn how to coach more effectively at work does it make you a better parent? It sure can!

We could make a long list of these valuable skills, from communication to dealing with conflict, to learning how to learn, to giving better feedback to being more creative… you get the idea (and have probably thought of five other examples yourself by now). There are many skills that we might learn as “self improvement” that will help us at work, and vice versa. So why label it one or the other?

Serendipity Rules. Because our learning grows based on connections, you never know when something you learned on the Discovery Channel might give you an ‘aha’ at work, or that the insight shared by the seminar leader at work helps you solve a vexing problem at home. Again, all development, all learning, all growth helps us in all parts of our lives.

But Wait

Does all of this mean that as I become a better knitter or bowler, I’ll be more productive and successful at work? Yes, for the reasons I described above (and some others too).

That doesn’t mean that your organization should send everyone to knitting class or bowling lessons, but it does mean that there is substantial merit in supporting any form of learning regardless of the content.

In the end, my goal is to help you view all skills more broadly in their application – instead of classifying some things as “personal development” and therefore they don’t matter at work.

Learning is learning. Personal development is professional development.

When you stop worrying about the distinctions, but rather think about the applications, you serve yourself and others much better.

Trying to Look Corporate

It seems lately that big corporate web sites are starting to look noticeably different from small business sites. ( Notice I said "different" and not "better.") It's getting harder and harder for a small biz to "fake" the corporate look.

Corporate sites have lavish graphics done by expensive designers. You flow through their pages with personalizing cookies, java, animated demonstrations, and more.

There is a big reason for this change. With investors giving billions to big on-line firms, the price of corporate web sites has exploded. E-commerce set-ups now run between $350,000 to $2 Million with the average price being $1 Million.

Meanwhile, those of us with small businesses get a copy of FrontPage, swipe some graphics off a friend's site, and cook up a free logo at zy.com.

This may not be bad. New reports show most of us will be using slow dial-up phone lines for the next three years.

That means graphics-heavy corporate sites will continue to be oh so s-l-o-w to load. Simple, fast-loading small biz sites may not get featured in the Wall Street Journal, but they will continue to be favorites for a great many Internet users.

No matter what internet marketing or networking biz you may be in...this tool may be the help you're looking for!  If the
Internet is the fastest growing marketplace in the world, then video is the most effective form of communication ON the internet.  Studies show that using video on the net increases the likelihood that YOUR message will be remembered. $2 billion a year is already being spent in the US alone on digital and streaming media.  The projections put that number at $12 billion around 2010.

A Little Humor to Start the Week

Savvy Shopper
=-=-=-=-=-=-=

I sell new and used computers for a living. At an exhibit and sale, I decided to give away an old 13-inch monitor that I had lying around.

A woman came by and said, "You're giving this away? I'll take it!"

Then she noticed a 15-inch monitor at the end of my table. "How much for that one?" she asked.

I told her it was $75. She looked down for a moment at her free monitor, thought for a moment, and asked,

"Do you take trade-ins?"

-----

Lisa, my co-worker at the travel agency, needed to send a letter of apology to a customer whose trip was a complete fiasco from start to finish. I reminded her of a similar situation a year earlier and dug out the letter I'd written then.

"All you have to do," I told her, "is to change the details, the date, and the name."

She looked it over and smiled wryly. "We won't even need to change the name."

-----

911 Call: A man called 911 and spoke frantically into the phone, "My wife is pregnant and her contractions are only two minutes apart!"

"Is this her first child?" the dispatcher asked.

"No, you idiot!" the man shouted.

"This is her husband!"

-----

The father of five children had won a toy at a raffle.

He called his kids together to ask which one should have the present.

"Who is the most obedient?" he asked.

"Who never talks back to mother? Who does everything she says?"

Five small voices answered in unison. "Okay, dad, you get the toy."

-----

Ralph – normally, I send it out from 5star-video.com and that mail server is physically located in Texas.  The server that houses 1-webwiz.com is in California.  Sometimes if the Internet Traffic is really heavy, the path to the site in Texas gets overloaded, and the mail starts to fail.  If that occurs, I stop the mailing, and switch it to the server in California.

Something to Think About
By Jan Tincher

Dream your dream, plan your dream, then watch your dream turn into reality.

See your future right before your very eyes. Some people like to put their dream in a basket, then send it on its way. They forget about it.

Well, guess what? If you forget about something, you aren't giving it the proper nourishment that it needs to grow. You aren't attracting it. If you ignore it, it will ignore you. This is how your brain works. Focus on your dream, and watch it blossom with the belief that you are doing all you can do to nurture it and help it grow.

Take control. Plan your dream. WATCH and nurture it as it turns into reality. Remember, if you waver -- it's like taking one step forward, oops, you wavered, take two steps back.
