Dot.Cons
by Bob Osgoodby

“Drug Pushers" lead someone into their addiction, by making it easy and attractive for them.  At first they might give away free samples. They try to lure them into their fold with the promise of easy money. Getting hooked however, has serious consequences for anyone. Before they know it, they will do anything to get their "daily fix".

The smart "pushers" however, don't use drugs.  They recruit others to do their dirty work. The recruits take all the risks, while the "kingpin" stays well hidden in the background, raking in his profits.

The advent of the Internet, has created similar situations, referred to as "Dot.Cons", that we face everyday.  Our mailboxes overflow with get rich schemes, and the lures they use are quite similar to that of the drug pusher. The promise of easy money without work is high on their list of tactics.

There are many schemes hatched to separate people from their money. There are some general steps however, that can save you a lot of money and heartache.

First, you should be wary of extravagant claims about performance or earnings potential. Get all promises in writing and review them carefully before making a payment or signing a contract.

Before entering into any agreement, read the fine print and explore all relevant links on their web site. Fraudulent promoters may bury the disclosures they don't want you to know about, by putting them in an obscure place, where you're unlikely see them. If challenged they cite those pages that you had access to as their defense. Be skeptical of any company that doesn't clearly state its name, street address and telephone number.

The most popular "Dot.Cons" typically are targeted toward retiree's or people who need to supplement their income. Many people will buy into programs, whose only customers are other distributors and not the general public. Some programs are actually illegal pyramid schemes. When products or services are sold only to other distributors like you, there's no way to make money.

You should avoid plans that require you to buy expensive inventory. Beware of shills -- "decoy" references paid by a plan's promoter to describe their fictional success in earning money through the plan.  This is commonly called "check flashing" and is usually done in an "opportunity meeting", or other high-pressure situation.  Never be pressured into making a decision to join at one of these meetings, and take your time to think over the offer.

Business Opportunities are also high on the list of potential scams - "BE Y0UR 0WN B0SS and earn big bucks". Don't be taken in by promises about P0TENTIAL EARNINGS, many consumers have invested in a "biz op" that turned sour, as there was no evidence to back up the earnings claims. You should get all the promises in writing, and study the proposed contract carefully before signing.

Credit Card Fraud is something everyone should be aware of, and you should never share your credit card number to prove you are over 18. You should provide your credit card information only when buying from a company you trust.

Many people want to get their own web sites for their business. Avoid Web Cramming where you are promised a free custom-designed website for a 30-day trial period, without an obligation to continue. Many companies charge their services to your telephone bill, and continue the service after the trial period, making it difficult, if not impossible to stop. You should review your telephone bills and challenge any charges you don't recognize.

Internet Access or Long Distance Services where they offer free money, simply for cashing a check should be studied carefully. Without realizing it, you may become "trapped" into long-term contracts for Internet access or long distance service, with big penalties for cancellation or early termination. If a check arrives at your home or business, read both sides carefully and look inside the envelope to find the conditions you're agreeing to if you cash the check.

Don't get hooked in buying a discounted computer if you sign up with an internet service provider.  Usually it is a long term contract, and if you are unhappy with their service, you are stuck for the term of the agreement.

These are just a few of the more popular "Dot.Cons, floating about the Internet. When confronted by offers like this, "Just Say No".

In The News

Online Broker To Cover Fraud Losses

Online stock broker E*Trade has announced a "zero liability" policy in which it will cover all losses resulting from online fraud. Although some other online brokerage firms said they have absorbed some or all of the costs of fraud in past incidents, E*Trade becomes the first to establish such a policy.

Losses due to fraud in the online brokerage industry remain relatively small and are a fraction of losses to credit card fraud, but the number of data breaches is rising. Moreover, when people are victimized through brokerage fraud, they are harmed "to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars," according to Gerri Walsh, acting director of the Securities and Exchange Commission's Office of Investor Education.

Officials at E*Trade said they expect other brokers will follow suit and implement similar policies, bringing the entire industry to a level similar to that of credit card companies. A federal law passed in the 1970s requires issuers of credit cards to limit customer liability to $50, but most issuers cover all losses.

Are You Making This Money Mistake In Your Business?
by Kalinda Rose Stevenson

"What's worth doing is worth doing for money."  Joseph Donohue

It's that time of year again.  This is the time when business owners get letters from CPAs and tax attorneys announcing that it's time to get ready to file taxes.  Getting ready to file taxes brings up one of the biggest challenges any business owner faces.  What do you do about handling the money?

I once took a daylong course called "Accounting For Non-Accountants."  The CPA who taught the class said that the biggest mistake business owners make is to hand over their accounting to someone else. His point was not that business owners have to do all of the accounting tasks, but that business owners need to understand what is happening with the money.

"Do what you love and the money will follow."

Marsha Sinetar

For many business owners, dealing with the money is the worst part of business.  They got into business to do something they love.  Paying attention to the money feels like a distraction from what they really want to do.  This belief is nurtured by the hopeful notion that money will miraculously appear when you do what you love.

I once attended a seminar featuring a charismatic speaker.  He could command the audience with the power of his personality.  During the course of the seminar, he talked about his wonderful office manager.  He talked about what a gem she was and what a gift it was to him that he had someone so competent handling his finances so that he was free to do what he loved to do.

Less than a year later, I took another seminar with the same charismatic speaker who talked about how heartbroken he was. He had recently discovered that his wonderful office manager had embezzled more than $1 million from him.  This brilliant speaker had made the mistake so many business owners make.  He had handed over complete control of his finances to someone else, thinking that money was a distraction from his real work.

In the process, he missed the fundamental difference between a hobby and business.  The function of business is to make money.  The IRS has criteria to determine whether you have a hobby or are running a business.   The difference concerns whether or not you make money with what you do.

When you have a hobby, you can do what you love and forget about the money.  When you start a business, forgetting about the money can be the quickest path to business failure.

"The surest way to ruin a man who doesn't know how to handle money is to give him some."  George Bernard Shaw

Isn't it ironic that the one thing that stands between doing a hobby and running a business is money and yet the one thing many business owners find most distasteful about being in business is handling the money?  When you stop to consider that the reason to have a business is to make money, it seems very shortsighted to surrender the most important part of your business to someone else.

The other extreme is to spend so much time keeping track of the finances, paying bills, and doing data entry that there is little time or energy left to do what you love.

So what do you do about the money?    Money is the lifeblood of your business.  And knowledge of money is power.  When you give up control of your money to someone else, you're giving way your power as a business owner.

"Where large sums of money are concerned, it is advisable to trust nobody."

Agatha Christie

There is no royal road to business success that will allow you to simply hand off all knowledge and responsibly about money to someone else.   At worst, you will become victim to embezzlement or incompetence.  At best, you will never feel in control of your business, because you don't understand what is happening with the money.

The solution is to understand that your business exists to make money.  As a business owner, it is up to you to control the money coming in and going out of your business. You don't have to do the data entry, but you do need to understand the data.

Boost Web Site Sales

We recently discovered an interesting trick to boost web site sales.  Put an email box right below the offer for your product or service.  Place it just below the button people need to click to order. Your box should say "Would you like more information? Put your email address in the box and we will send it to you."

Have the form trigger a three message autoresponder. Each message should tell the customer more about your offer, the benefits it can bring them, and other helpful information.

A Little Humor to Start the Week

Agricultural studies
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

The school of agriculture's dean of admissions was interviewing a prospective student, "Why have you chosen this career?" he asked.

"I dream of making a million dollars in farming, like my father," the student replied.

"Your father made a million dollars in farming?" echoed the dean much impressed.

"No," replied the applicant. "But he always dreamed of it."

My six-year-old grandson called his mother from his friend Charlie's house and confessed he had broken a lamp when he threw a football in their living room.

"But, Mom," he said, brightening, "you don't have to worry about buying another one. Charlie's mother said it was irreplaceable."

-----

What does the pig say, Michael?" his mother asked.
"Oink, oink," replied Michael.

"What does the cow say?"
"Moooo."

"What does the chicken say?" his mother continued.
"Cluck, cluck."

"What does the duck say?"
Without a moment's hesitation, Michael replied, "AFLAC!"

-----

When the family car developed a slight knock, the husband asked his wife if she had bought regular or premium gas, but she couldn't remember.

"You probably got the cheaper gas," he said. "That could account for the engine running so rough."

"No, the gas wasn't cheaper!" she replied indignantly.

"Well, how much did it cost?" asked the husband.

"It cost the same as always," said the wife. "I bought the usual ten dollars worth."

Feedback - Q&A

Bob – A few weeks ago, I placed a free ad and it never was put on the web site. Now, when I try to place an ad those don’t appear either – What’s up??

David H. in Atlanta

-----

David – your first ad was for an illegal chain letter, and now your email address has been blocked. We have a “one strike and your out rule.” We want our readers to trust the ads displayed and if there is ever a complaint filed against an advertiser, they are banned from placing future ads. This includes paid ads in publications such as this.

Fortunately, we don’t receive too many, but when we do, we simply put a filter on our email client which sends the offending email address to the “Trash Folder” and we never even see it. The only way around this is to get a new email address. If your ads are legitimate, that address won’t be banned.  BUT – If another illegal offer is made, or a complaint is filed, we not only ban that address as well, but also file a complaint with your email service provider.

There is no room for scam artists on our Web Site or for ads placed in our publications.

Something to Think About
By Jan Tincher

Do you take responsibility?

Take responsibility for any change you want to make in your life. Condition yourself to take the initiative to succeed in whatever change you want.

Don't use words like: "I know this won't work, but I'll *try* it anyway." Just condition yourself to go ahead and do it! Reprogram yourself, *condition* yourself, to succeed. Condition that new pattern until it's consistent, then your success will be consistent!
