Rejection
by Bob Osgoodby

People want to do business with people. If you're in sales, and can't stand "Rejection", you're in the wrong business. Trying to market something online, does not shelter you from this either.

People will contact you and not buy into your offer.

Worse yet, you don't even get any contacts. If this is happening, you might want to ask yourself why.  Many people will simply "quit" and write it off as a bad experience.  Those who succeed find out why.

The first axiom of marketing is that people want to do business with people.  If their only contact is with an affiliate page, that may or may not bear your name, they will most likely "click on by".  Ask yourself - would you do business with someone you never heard of, know nothing about, and have no way of contacting?

Letting people know about you is one of the strongest statements you can make about your business. If you give a short background on yourself, with appropriate contact information, they most likely will have the necessary confidence to proceed.  I have full contact information on my website, including a telephone number they can call in the event of a question or a problem.

Now you might think that giving your phone number to the world, is going to result in a lot of "bad things". Not true!  In our 11 years of doing business on the Internet, I have never had a "crank" call - never.  I post the hours that people can call, and receive very few calls outside of that time frame.  After hours, I turn on the answering machine and give them the hours I'm available.  I suggest a broadcast type of message which doesn't allow the caller to leave a message.

Now the majority of people will never call, but will use the email channels provided instead.  The presence of a telephone number however, goes a long way in allaying their concerns.  I don't recommend an "800" number, as people will think twice before spending their own dime to call.  I also give a mailing address, and no, we haven't been visited by "stalkers".

Another nice touch is to include your photo with your Bio information.  As they say, "it's always nice to put a face with a name". The more you can establish a personal bond with your potential buyer, the greater your chances of success.

The second axiom of business is to learn from your mistakes, and correct the things that you are doing wrong. During the Second World War, when a group of young pilots in the RAF were fighting for their lives in the air over England, they would often be hit by enemy fire. Their engine would start to misfire causing it to make knocking noises.  Thus was coined the phrase "every knock is one step closer to home".  They had a great attitude.

We can take a lesson from them.  If you can determine why your offer is being knocked or rejected by your potential clients, the closer you will get to attaining your goals. Rejection is common in business, and even the largest companies do studies on every ad campaign they conduct to make them better.

A simple statement on your web page to encourage feedback can go a long way, but don't be discouraged by some of the remarks you will receive.  No matter how crude some may be, they are being triggered by something, so don't take offense. Now while I normally advocate the use of a form for sending information from a website, here I do not.  Let them be automatically transferred by use of the "mailto:" command to their email account to write the message, as you will then know the return address is valid.

Yes, they may wish to remain anonymous as well, but the use of a form in this instance, which simply allows them to vent, will serve little purpose.  You really don't want to be influenced by some bored grade schoolers with nothing better to do.

Follow up to all the legitimate replies you receive to find out why they have reservations.  Just this process alone may swing them into your camp. Rejection is not always bad, and if you learn from your mistakes, it just may prove to be a positive factor.

In The News

Professor Canned For Online Postings

A tenured professor at the University of Saskatchewan has been fired for posting derogatory comments on RateMyProfessors.com about other faculty at the university. Stephen Berman was accused of using the Web site to criticize other faculty over a seven-month period in 2002 and 2003.

Although the comments were made anonymously, presumably by students, some of the targeted faculty suspected that Berman was involved. A member of the university's IT staff determined that some of the 80 postings in question had been made from Berman's office. Berman, who was on the school's math faculty for 30 years, later admitted making the postings and sent a letter of apology to his department. Nevertheless, Peter MacKinnon, the university's president, recommended that Berman be fired, a decision supported by an independent arbitration committee. The committee found that Berman had sufficiently violated the conditions of his employment to terminate him despite his having tenure.

"In a university context," said the committee, "it is quite simply intolerable for a senior professor to pretend to be a student in order to anonymously attack his colleagues."

Business Success Without the Blindfold
by Kalinda Rose Stevenson

"Good business leaders create a vision, articulate the vision, passionately own the vision, and relentlessly drive it to completion."

Jack Welch

Vision is the first critical element in business success.   Vision gives a clear picture of what you intend your business to accomplish. Without vision, you simply don't know where you're going.   Hard work and perseverance cannot replace a clear vision.

It is something like the experience I had at a wilderness camp in the Canadian Rockies.  About twenty of us were blindfolded and led to a maze in the woods.  The maze was laid out with ropes strung together, from tree to tree.   The terrain was uneven, with bumps and hollows in the ground.  The ropes ranged from a foot to three or four feet off the ground.  Our objective was to ring a bell somewhere in the course.

I know that I retraced my steps more than once, coming to a place where the ropes met at a forty-five degree angle, or where a rope ended at a tree.  I knew I had come to that same corner before, touched that same tree before.  Then I would turn around and go back, trying to find my way without being able to see.  Throughout the course, I met others, our hands touching on the ropes as we groped in darkness along the rope maze.

Meanwhile, I could hear the bell ring at least three times.  That meant at least three of the participants managed to find their way.  One time the bell rang, I knew I was close.  I could tell the direction of the sound, but somehow, I got off track again.  I didn't find the bell.  Most of us didn't.

I did persevere.   I didn't give up, even as began to feel frustrated that I couldn't get out of the maze.  I kept trying to find my way, back and forth and up and down along the ropes, but I couldn't find my way with my eyes covered.

After we took off our blindfolds, the bell was clear enough.  With the blindfolds, most of us couldn't find it.   All of our effort was wasted effort.

I'm not sure what lesson the wilderness camp leaders intended us to gain from the experience on that day.   But as a metaphor for doing business, the experience is a powerful object lesson of what happens when you set out to accomplish something without being able to see where we were going.

We had no vision.  We were supposed to find a bell somewhere, without having a clear vision of where the bell was.   One of the participants who finally did ring the bell said that he had missed the bell even when he had found the right tree.  He hadn't reached high enough up the tree trunk to find the bell.

The whole process is something like going into business to achieve "success."  There is no clarity of vision in such language. What does "success" look like?  Will you know if when you find it?  Where is it?  Without a vision, you can work hard, struggle, come close without knowing it, and never reach your objective.

The word "business" is directly related to the word "busy."  Both mean "care," "anxiety," and "being occupied."   This is a good description of my experience of the rope maze.  I have no idea how long we were on the ropes course.  It seemed like an eternity.   I know I was very busy, continually moving, continually working, continually trying to find my way, going over the same ground again and again without ever reaching my objective.  I was busy, but my busy-ness was not effective.

Perseverance in the wrong direction is simply wasted effort.  Without a clear vision of where you are going, you can get far off track, still working hard, and never accomplish much of anything.

The trap of being doing business without a clear vision of where you are going is that you simply become busy.  Being busy is no substitute for doing the real work of your business.

A Little Humor to Start the Week

The Parking Ticket
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

I went to the store the other day, and I was in there for only about 5 minutes. When I came out there was a police officer writing a parking ticket.

So I went up to him and said, "Come on, buddy, how about giving a guy a break?"

He ignored me and continued writing the ticket.

So I called him a pencil-necked geek.

He glared at me and started writing another ticket for worn tires!

So I called him a piece of horse manure.

He finished the second ticket and put it on the windshield with the first. Then he started writing a third ticket!

This went on for about 20 minutes... the more I abused him, the more tickets he wrote.

I didn't care. My car was parked around the corner.

I try to have a little fun each day. It's important.

-----

The little church in the suburbs suddenly stopped buying from its regular office supply dealer. So, the dealer telephoned Deacon Brown to ask why.

"I'll tell you why," said Deacon Brown. "Our church ordered some pencils from you to be used in the pews for visitors to register."

"Well," interrupted the dealer, "didn't you receive them yet?"

"Oh, we received them all right," replied Deacon Brown.

"However, you sent us some golf pencils...each stamped with the words, 'Play Golf Next Sunday'."

-----

Our co-worker kept trying to get her mother to fly out for a visit. "No way am I getting on an airplane," was the inevitable answer.

"Look, Mom, when it's your time to go, it doesn't matter if you're on the ground or in the air."

"I know," said her mother. "I just don't want to be that far off the ground when it's the pilot's time to go."

-----

One woman was bragging to her next-door neighbor about her son, a college student. "Why, our son is so brilliant, every time we get a letter from him we have to go to the dictionary."

"You're lucky," the neighbor said. "Every time we get a letter from ours, we have to go to the bank!"

                                     Riddle

A king decided to let a prisoner try to escape the prison with his life. The king placed 2 marbles in a jar that was glued to a table. One of the marbles was supposed to be black, and one was supposed to be blue.

If the prisoner could pick the blue marble, he would escape the prison with his life. If he picked the black marble, he would be executed. However, the king was very mean, and he wickedly placed 2 black marbles in the jars and no blue marbles. The prisoner witnessed the king only putting 2 black marbles in the jars.

If the jar was not see-through and the jar was glued to the table and that the prisoner was mute so he could not say anything, how did he escape with his life?

Feedback - Q&A

Hi Bob,

This is the second time I've seen this ad in your ezine.

Turn $10 into $10,000 in 14 Days With PayPal!

Have you visited the website?  Isn't this just an old fashioned pyramid scheme?

Virginia

-----

Virginia – no a pyramid scheme promises great earnings through the fees paid by recruiting others to sell a product or service. Equinox was a good example of this.  You purchased a garage full of stuff you couldn’t possibly sell, from an existing representative, who got a huge commission for selling it to you.  The only way you could possibly recoup your money was by making similar sales to other suckers.

This more closely resembles the old fashioned chain letter. While in their original form, they were illegal, this one seems to have a different spin to it. Yes, I did examine the web site before accepting the ad. While this is in my judgment not illegal, like all “get rich quick” offers, you must exercise “due diligence before getting involved.

A Google search found over 37,000 web sites discussing this particular offer.  Most of them were discussion boards and blog sites. In a random sampling, I couldn’t find any evidence of people calling it a scam or saying it was illegal.

Answer to Riddle

The prisoner grabbed one of the marbles from the jar and concealed it in his hand. He then swallowed it, and picked up the other marble and showed everyone. The marble was black, and since the other marble was swallowed, it was assumed to be the blue one. So the mean king had to set him free.
