The Virtual Garden
by Bob OsgoodbyWhen planting a garden, or doing a bit of landscaping, there are many factors which must considered. Size of plants, colors, hardiness, and need for sunlight and water, all come into play. If any mistakes are made along the way, the garden will not flourish.
There are many parallels between starting a business and planting a garden. In fact, being in an online business is like planting a virtual garden. If any of the steps are overlooked, like a poorly designed garden, the business will not do well.
There are basically three things that those in an online business must do. First - you must pick your program carefully. If you get involved with the wrong one, you will not reap the desired harvest. Just because a program has been around a long time, does not necessarily mean you will achieve success.
Some of the affiliate programs on the web are played out. You should also avoid the programs that make money mainly by garnering new recruits. At some point the new recruits will slow down and the program will go the way of most Ponzi or pyramid schemes.
Secondly, after planting, you have to care for your plants. Advertising is like sunlight, water and fertilizer for your business. A one time or sporadic ad will not get customers.
Exposure, Exposure, Exposure gets the customers. It is a common maxim in advertising that it takes 5 to 7 exposures to an ad to get someone to react. Your copy must also be geared toward your target market. It must be well written, makes an offer that gets someone's attention, and allows immediate feedback.
If you are consistent in your advertising, experiment with your copy until you start getting responses. If your ad doesn't pull, change it - couldn't be simpler.
Let's stick with exposure for a minute. It takes a dedicated person to place their free classified ads on an ongoing basis. Miss a week here and there and you are committing a big mistake. You are not being consistent.
Consistency means that you advertise in different places, and on a regular basis. Let's face it - any advertising program must use multiple ways to reach their audience. Search out those publications which are geared toward your target market, and contract with them on a "long term" basis. Many offer discounts for ongoing ads.
When someone sees your ad in different places, they start to pay attention. Enough exposure and they just may contact you for further information.
Which brings us to the third step in your program - if you don't use some type of auto-responder, you are simply not serious in your advertising efforts. The auto-response presents the details to them about your offer. They not only get your response within minutes, but you get their E-mail address for follow-up purposes.
You can get auto-responders from a number of places, but perhaps the simplest is using the Eudora email client. If someone sends an email to a specific address, or with a specific subject line, it can automatically file it in a follow up folder and send a canned response.
I got a check yesterday from a person I never even talked with. She visited our web site and requested additional information, which was sent by our auto-responder. What a great way to do business.
The final step is the actual harvest, and you must have the proper tools. You must have a way to immediately close the deal and for the prospect the make payment. You can use a number of resources including your own merchant account, online checks or a service such as PayPal.
Advertising on the Internet has no magic. Unless it is done properly, however the world will NOT beat a path to your door. You must use the same techniques and procedures that you would use in any offline advertising campaign. Those that do will have a successful business, and like the Virtual Garden can reap a profitable harvest.

In The News
Philadelphia's Wi-Fi Takes Shape
The city of Philadelphia is moving forward with its plan to have a low-cost wireless network covering the entire 135 square miles of the city. The city announced that it selected EarthLink to build and maintain the network, which will not depend on taxpayer money.
EarthLink will pay the city an access fee for the 4,000 streetlight poles where access points will be deployed and will also give about 5 percent of its revenue from the network to Wireless Philadelphia, a nonprofit set up to oversee the project. EarthLink will charge less than $20 per month for access to the network, and economically disadvantaged residents will pay just $9.95 per month. In addition, EarthLink will sell access to other ISPs, which can then sell access for the same, sub-$20-per-month rate. The city will receive 3,000 free or discounted accounts on the network, as well as 700 discounted T-1 accounts.
The money Wireless Philadelphia receives from the deal will be used for educational and social programs in the city. The city will use about $2 million of the streetlight fees to fund programs that address the digital divide for city residents.

Balancing the Scales
By Kelley RobertsonIf you’re like most people you are probably working harder and longer than you used to. As a result, finding balance in today’s fast-paced world is more difficult than ever before. Yet, a healthy balance has also never been more important. Here are a few strategies that can help:
1. First and foremost, you must love what you do. We spend over a third of our life at work – doesn’t it make sense to enjoy it? I learned many years ago that the more you enjoy your job or work the more successful you will be. Even a high-pressure job is less stressful when you fully enjoy it. I know several people who have high-profile and high-pressure careers but they still maintain a sense of balance because they love their business. Enjoying your work gives you more satisfaction and personal fulfillment.
If you find yourself in a job that doesn’t motivate or stimulate you, consider making a change. There are lots of great books on the market that can help you discover what type of work you are best suited for.2. Make time for family and friends. Regardless how busy you are it is critical to spend time with people who are close to you. In the last several years my wife and I make sure to schedule a ‘date night’ once a week. This usually means having dinner at a local restaurant or going to a movie, show, or concert. Although we often talk about our business it gives us the opportunity to catch up and discuss things we don’t always find time to talk about during the rest of the week. Spending time with friends is also a great way to recharge mentally, particularly if your friends are not employed in the same industry.
3. Find a hobby. I think it is important to engage yourself in a pastime or hobby because they help you forget about work for a while. My two favorite pastimes are reading and running. In additional to releasing stress, this ‘escape’ helps recharge your batteries and maintain your objectivity. Plus, a clear energized mind is more creative and open to accepting new ideas.
4. Schedule “me” time. As selfish as it sounds we all need a few hours of personal time. I usually schedule this when my wife is out running errands. Most of the time I’ll read, watch a movie, or sometimes take a nap. I don’t feel guilty for taking this time to myself because it actually helps my marriage by allowing me to engage in something I fully enjoy without worrying about distractions from other people. One word of caution, “Me” time should not be scheduled at the sacrifice of others or occupy a large portion of your schedule. If you have been on a business trip for a week it’s not fair to your family to schedule the entire weekend as “me” time.
5. Take vacations. Vacations are critical to your well-being. It is essential to take a break from the hectic and fast-paced business world. Too many people in business wave their lack of vacation time as a badge of honour but I feel that a lack of a break from the business negatively affects your ability to perform at your maximum potential. When I started my business, I set a goal of taking a one-week break at least three times a year. I adhered to this goal in the first three years because I made sure to plan my breaks early in the year. Then in my fourth year I neglected to plan this time off. Before I knew it, October had rolled around and I still hadn’t taken any time off. By this time, I was feeling burned out, I experienced more stress, and I had less energy, drive and motivation.
6. Disconnect yourself. Today’s technology has made it very difficult for us to completely disconnect from business. I find that I am drawn to email on the weekends and even on vacations. We don’t want to miss anything and sometimes our boss even requires that we stay connected to the office on our time off. However, I strongly believe that disconnecting yourself completely from voice mail, email, your PDA and BlackBerry is essential to creating some semblance of balance in our lives. There is no question that you will have more work to catch up on when you return to work but this complete break helps your brain recharge.
I won’t suggest that creating this balance is easy – it’s not. However, with a bit of focus and attention you can start to balance the scales. It’s worth the effort.

Is Video in your Future
No matter what internet marketing or networking biz you may be in...this tool may be the help you're looking for! If the Internet is the fastest growing marketplace in the world, then video is the most effective form of communication ON the internet. Studies show that using video on the net increases the likelihood that YOUR message will be remembered. $2 billion a year is already being spent in the US alone on digital and streaming media. The projections put that number at $12 billion around 2010.

Goodman was a moderately successful stockbroker who dreamed of making the big money someday. He took his friend out for a drive, and he chose the route carefully in order to impress on him the possibilities of the brokerage business.
"Look at that yacht," he said as they drove slowly past a marina. "That 96' beauty belongs to the senior partner at Merrill Lynch. That one over there 104' is owned by the head of Goldman, Sachs. And look at that huge 210' yacht out there. That's the pride and joy of the top seller at Prudential-Bache."
His friend Morris was silent. Goodman turned to look at him and saw a pained look on his face.
"What's the matter?" Goodman asked.
"I was just wondering," Morris said. "why aren't there any customers' yachts?"

A visitor once asked, "Does it ever rain in Arizona?"
A rancher quickly answered, "Yes, it does. Do you remember in the Bible where it rained for 40 days and 40 nights?"
The visitor replied, "Yes, I'm familiar with Noah's flood."
"Well," the rancher puffed up, "We got about two and a half inches of that."
-----Karen and Jill were standing in line at a fast-food restaurant, waiting to place their order. There was a big sign posted. "No bills larger than $20 will be accepted."
Jill says to Karen, pointing to the sign, "Believe me, if I HAD a bill larger than $20, I wouldn't be eating here."-----
