Smaller, Better, Faster
by Bob OsgoodbyIt seems we are obsessed with the concept of "Bigger, Better, Faster", however in the world of technology, it might very well be "Smaller, Better, Faster". A few short years ago, the Pentium 1 was the hot machine, and yes I still have one. It is now relegated to running our bookkeeping system, and yes, my first cell phone was an absolute clunker.
However, it seems that making things smaller is pretty much restricted to the hardware. Because the capability is so much greater, it seems programmers have gotten sloppy, and could care less if the program runs efficiently. Gone are the days when a program had to run in a minimum amount of memory. Disks store more data than ever, but in a smaller package.
But wait - we are discussing "Apples and Oranges" here. Yes, the physical size has gotten smaller, but the capacity has lived up to the original concept of "Bigger, Better, Faster". We are still near the very beginning of computers and who knows what the future will hold.
There is one thing however that will not change - enter the human equation. The new and inexperienced are joining the masses, and are ripe for the "plucking". Like magic, their email addresses become known to the world, and the offers start rolling in. The con artists have simply had a change of venue, and are pursuing them relentlessly.
Some people really believe that they have been selected to be in the Internet Version of "Who's Who". That con goes back many years, and now there is a new audience to rope in. The old version of someone who found money, and will share it with you if you give them a good will deposit has changed a bit. Today, someone has stolen money from a backward country, and want you to help get it out. Of course, you will need to show your good faith.
Almost every con you encounter actually predates the computer, and has simply been brought up to date. We receive hundreds of emails, and they all promise immense wealth in a short period of time. And here is the best part - you don't have to work. Well, if that were the case, we would all be sitting in our "skivvies" and telling our boss to "forget about it".
Folks - that is just not the case. Can you earn a living on the Internet? Sure! But guess what - you still have to work for it. Forget about the "get rich quick" plans - they don't work. If they did, we would all be rich.
Find yourself a "niche" that you can promote. Many people have done this and are making a respectable living on the net. Get yourself a domain name, build a website and market it. The world however, will not beat a path to your door. If you don't advertise, like any business you will not succeed. There are plenty of places to place your ads. Some are free and others are not.
Ezines are a good bet. They are being distributed to people who have asked to receive the information. If they are a match for the market you want to target, they should be high on your list. Ezines that have a very large subscriber base, that are not a match for your market are normally not a good deal. Advertise in smaller ones that are.
Forget about automatic submission software that sends your ad to FFA sites - it is a waste of money. The ad you submit, will in all probability never be seen by a human. The only people making any money from this submission software are the people selling the software.
People running the FFA sites get thousands of submissions a day this way. They automatically drop old ads in a matter of seconds to make room for the new. What do you think the odds are, that someone will stumble on their site and see your ad. If you are going to place free ads on a website, make sure they have a life of at least a week or so.
While "Smaller, Better, Faster" might be appropriate in describing available hardware, it does not replace known and proven marketing techniques. The fact that you can send your ad free to large numbers of people, doesn't mean it will be read. To make a living on the web, you still have to "earn it - the old fashioned way".

Philadelphia WI-FI Nears Approval
Philadelphia's long-debated citywide wireless network is on the verge of having final approval, after which implementation of the network is expected to begin within a few weeks.
The network has raised a range of objections since it was initially proposed, and supporters of the effort have had to make a number of changes and concessions. A city council committee, which was the last step before a vote by the full city council, demanded that language be added to ensure EarthLink will use contractors who work with minorities, women, and people with disabilities. In addition, Wireless Philadelphia, the nonprofit that will oversee the network, will have a larger board than originally planned, with broader representation from the city council and from various municipal offices.
The full city council is expected to approve the deal, at which time EarthLink will begin installing wireless transmitters on 4,000 utility poles owned by the city. The network, which will charge a lower rate to poor users, is expected to be finished in 18 months.

Marketing Techniques That Cut Through Clutter
by Michael FleischnerWith the proliferation of websites, blogs, RSS feeds, podcasts, and other communication tools, consumers are bombarded with marketing messages, new products, unbeatable offers, and other opportunities on a daily basis. Marketing professionals are challenged with finding new ways to reach consumers despite ever increasing promotional noise and clutter.
So many of today’s marketing executives and product development professionals still believe that building a good product, is all you need - consumers will seek them out on their own. However, nothing could be further from the truth. In today’s marketplace, having a good product or service is simply the cost of entry. And unfortunately, because of clutter, may never get noticed even if a prospect is looking for it.
Marketing made simple.
Although one could argue that the traditional pillars of marketing (product, place, price, and promotion) are still required for the effective marketing and selling of products or services, they alone are not enough to cut through clutter. The only true weapon against clutter is relevancy. When a product or service is seen as being relevant to the specific needs of a prospect, then you've successfully overcome the clutter that prevents consumers from taking notice of your product or service.
How to make your marketing relevant.
To be relevant, you must first have a firm understanding of your audience. Ask yourself, “Who is my prospect? What does he or she need? Want? How does he or she like to be communicated to?” It’s only after you have a deep understanding of your audience that you can begin to shape promotional marketing messages that can consistently differentiate your offering and be seen as unique in a sea of noise and sameness.
Once you've gotten a grasp on your audience, you need to apply an ongoing approach of refining your marketing message, offer(s), and campaign timing. If you apply just a little discipline towards testing and measuring the effectiveness of these marketing components, you can quickly determine the best formula for reaching your prospective audience regardless of competing noise.
After you become relevant, deliver an experience.Now let’s assume that you've been paying attention and you have accomplished the need to be relevant, what then? In order to take a prospect that final few inches, to where they try or purchase your product, you must be capable of describing or delivering the experience you can provide. In an increasingly commoditized world, prospects differentiate the products or services they chose by the experiences they can or do create.
Keep in mind that giving a consumer a positive experience goes beyond the obvious. Be sure to take a customer centric approach and work towards an incredibly positive user experience. This will set you apart from your competition and help you build your brand.

Next morning, the phone rings. It's a very irate corporate administrator wanting to know why we had an unscheduled outage the day before. The tech calmly explained about the storm, which he had no control over.
The Administrator's response? "Next time, put it on the schedule before you have an unexpected outage!"

Re: last weeks Trivia, while visiting the USS Alabama in Mobile Bay, we noticed an area of the ship that looked like an old-time soda fountain/ice cream parlor. It was called the Gedunk, and we later learned is was in fact an ice cream spot for sailors who were out to sea for long periods of time. (Unfortunately, since Hurricane Katrina, I believe this tourist attraction is not currently open.)
