Summer Doldrums
by Bob Osgoodby

Warm-weather months are a fun and busy time. It's time break out the barbie, plant your flowers, and maybe take a trip to the beach.  With the price of gas, most people however will be staying pretty close to home, but the cold weather is gone and the lazy, hazy days of summer are upon us. It just seems that so many things have been added to our plate, we have little time for anything else.

But wait! Does that include the business you worked so hard on during the winter? Unfortunately for some it does.  It's like the race car driver, who speeds around the track and gets a lead of his competition, but then decides to coast the last few laps. Guess what - he is going to be passed.

A lot of people virtually take the summer off from their online business, and this is an opportunity for you.  While they are taking 2 steps back, you can leapfrog over them and get the customers they might have otherwise gotten.

This is not a new phenomenon, and is as old as the web itself. Online business typically slows down during the summer months. But who is slowing down?  It is usually those who work the web part-time in the evening.  Now when it gets dark early, this is easy.  But when the days are longer, it seems there just isn't enough time to do everything else, and also take care of business.

If you are serious about developing your online business, you must have the discipline it takes to continue.  It's awfully easy to think you'll get it done tomorrow, but unfortunately, your customers will not wait for you to get motivated.

Remember, an Opportunity Doesn't Go Away It Just Goes To Someone Else.

Now is the time to renew your marketing efforts.  Can you combine those lazy, hazy days with a renewed effort?  If you can, the lost opportunities of others might just come your way.

Might you slow down a bit?  Sure, if you do it right, and remember your short term and long term goals.  Maybe you should investigate advertising in publications you hadn't tried in the past.  You should consider running multiple ads with different copy in the ones you are already using.  How about using an auto-responder in those ads. This will ensure you get back to an inquiry right away, and you can do the follow-up at your leisure.

Why not put a form on your website(s) to handle inquiries? Through the use of checkboxes, you can immediately categorize the requests of your potential customers.  By using a mail package such as Eudora, you can automatically respond with a "canned" response that is tailored to their request.

Will some of your prospects also be running at a slower speed? Of course, and this is why you must redouble your efforts. Don't forget that thousands upon thousands of new prospects get web access every day.  They are hungry for information, and might just be looking for the type of opportunity you offer.  These "Internet Newbies" are like a fertile field that you can harvest during the summer.  Bitten by the prospect of earning money on the Net, they are viable candidates that you will lose if you don't vigorously pursue them.

I know that with the press of things we have to do it is easy to slack off.  Much of your competition will succumb to the “Summer Doldrums", and if you take advantage of their inactivity, you just might be pleasantly surprised at the results.

In The News

New Orleans To Get New Wireless Network

The city of New Orleans has announced a deal under which EarthLink will build a wireless network for the city, addressing complaints about wireless service previously offered by the city in violation of a state law.

The law, intended to create a level playing field for commercial vendors, forbids municipalities from offering wireless Internet service at speeds faster than 128 Kbps. New Orleans had been offering service at 512 Kbps. In the new deal, EarthLink will build a 15-square-mile network that will provide free Internet access at speeds of 300 Kbps.

The free service will be supported by advertising; residents will also have the option of paying for faster service without ads. EarthLink will bear the cost of building and maintaining the network.

Is Starting An Online Business For You?
by Dan Farrell

Working at home has been a dream of many that goes back many years. Staying at home and enjoying watching the kids grow up is a goal worth fighting for.

Let's take a look into making a living or part time living from the comfort of your home. You owe it to yourself to gain the freedom a home business can offer.

In the past, there have been multi-level marketing plans to sell everything from vitamins to soap. There have been mail order catalog opportunities. Many tried buying and selling real estate. Each of these opportunities made many people a lot of money, but each of them also cost many people more money.

More people have spent money than have made money in every business venture.

The problem is many inexperienced people get into moneymaking schemes after attending a meeting somewhere. The offer may be legitimate, but most people fail in business.

According to the US Small Business Administration, over 50% of small businesses fail in the first year and 95% fail with the first five years. That is a scary statistic.

This means that the average business is doomed to fail from the beginning. It also means that you will lose a lot of money if you start a business. WOW! No wonder you are leery about putting up your hard-earned cash for what is statically a crapshoot, a roll of the dice.

So, what is the answer for the average person who does not want to lose their savings and even their home equity in a business? Start building a "digital business" online. Create a website that generates its income without you needing to invest in inventory or even lease a building to house your business. Then create two or ten more websites generating income for you.

You may not know how to create a website today. It is an easily learned skill. There is software you can buy or download free that will help you. There are tutorials on making a website profitable. You can do this.

Once you have a website online you can put other people’s advertising on your site and be paid when someone buys one of their products. This is called affiliate marketing. If this was my baby toys webpage and I mentioned a great baby toy with a link to my advertiser’s toy page you might go there and buy the toy. If you did, I would get a commission.

You could also put ads on your pages that only require someone to click on the ad for you to be paid. Again, if you were on my baby toy page and an ad talks about a toy. You click on the ad to go see it and I am paid for you clicking on the ad.

The advertiser feels their sales page is compelling enough for them to sell enough of that toy to cover their cost of the clicks that got you there.

Some advertisers do not require you to buy the product when you click on an ad, but you will not be paid unless you fill out their application. This is usually seen on sites like insurance sites or loan application sites. You do not have to get a policy or take out a loan for me to be paid. When you fill out the form, I qualify for my commission for sending you to the advertiser.

These are typically the ways a beginning website entrepreneur starts generating income on the Internet. Once you understand that part of internet marketing, you may move on to selling your own digital products.

A digital product is one that can be downloaded from your website. You can sell your own ebook you wrote yourself or an ebook you purchased and have the rights to sell online.

If you are a programmer, you can sell you own computer program from your site.

You could also sell someone else's program that you purchased the rights to sell. Notice that not all of the above ideas require you to invest in a lot of inventory. Even the products are free if you create them yourself. Not everything you are doing so far requires a large investment of your hard earned money. It does require a large investment of your time.

All of the material you need to create a website can be found free online if you do not want to purchase some popular program. Your only expense SHOULD be a domain of your own, such as yourdomain.com. You can get free hosting from various places but for moneymaking venture, this is not advised.

For a small investment, you too can be PRESIDENT OF YOUR OWN COMPANY.

Maybe the statistics are the same for success online as they are in other businesses, but this is a chance to find out without losing the farm doing it.

The reason most online / home based businesses fail or never make any money, is because of the lack of a plan. As with a brick and mortar, offline, business you have to know where you want to go, how you will get there and when. The old saying, "those who fail to plan, plan to fail" has never been more true than building an online business.

Trivia

In 1857 the first shipment of perforated postage stamps was received by the U.S. Government. Only imperforated ones had been used previously. When stamp sheets were issued years later for the first time, someone thought it a good idea to return to the non-perforated style so that folks had to cut the stamps off the page. That idea didn’t last long. Customer complaints brought the perforated stamps to the sheets of stamps as well.

Build Your E-Mail List With Free Goodies

Nothing will keep you going in lean times like your own house email list. Nothing will help you turn good times into GREAT profits like your own house email list.

Email is almost free to send. It's handy for people to open and read. And people who willingly give you their email address are VERY likely to value what you have to say.

Use freebies to get people to give you their email address. The most common way is to over a free, info-packed newsletter. Folks sign up, they get your newsletter, you keep their email address.

You can also do this with ebooks. Rather than giving people your web site address where they can download the book, ask for the person's email address. Then send them an email giving them a special link where they can download the ebook. Make sure to mention that you will be sending additional updates from time to time, and how to unsubscribe if they don't want them.

Provide free access to your "private area." People have to enter their name and email address to get inside. There, they find good information or freebies they can't get on the public parts of your site.

Free ebooks, coupons, reports, and ads can also work this way. MAKE SURE people KNOW you are adding their name to your list and give them a way to GET OFF your list easily. You NEVER want to be accused of SPAM.

A Little Humor to Start the Week

Dirty Magazines
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Soon after being transferred to a new duty station, my Marine husband called home to tell me he would be late - again. He went on to say that dirty magazines had been discovered in the platoon's quarters and they had to discipline the whole squad. I launched into a tirade, arguing that many men had pictures hanging in their quarters at our previous post, so his new platoon should not be penalized for something trivial.

My husband calmly listened to my gripes and then explained, "Honey, dirty magazines: the clips from their rifles had not been cleaned."

A company, feeling it was time for a shakeup, hires a new CEO. This new boss is determined to rid the company of all slackers. On a tour of the facilities, the CEO notices a guy leaning on a wall. The room is full of workers and he wants to let them know he means business!

The CEO walks up to the guy and asks, "And how much money do you make a week?" A little surprised, the young fellow looks at him and replies, "I make $300.00 a week. Why?"

The CEO then hands the guy $600 in cash and screams, "Here's two weeks pay, now GET OUT and don't come back!"

Feeling pretty good about his first firing, the CEO looks around the room and asks, "Does anyone want to tell me what that goof-off did?"

With a sheepish grin, one of the other workers mutters, "Pizza delivery guy from Domino's."

Morris had been playing golf for years and he had the finest golfing equipment, but his technique never improved a bit.

As his friend watched, he teed up at the first hole and promptly drove a brand-new ball into the woods. On the second hole, he drove another new ball into a lake. On the third, he lost a new ball in another part of the woods.

"Why don't you use an old ball?" his friend Sam asked.

"I've never had an old ball," Morris said.

-----

A couple of old guys were golfing when one said he was going to Dr. Taylor for a new set of dentures in the morning.

The other remarked that he too had gone to Dr. Taylor a few years before.

"Is that so?" the first said. "Did he do a good job?"

"Well, I was on the course yesterday when the fellow on the ninth hole hooked a shot," he said. "The ball must have been going 200 mph when it hit me in the stomach. That," he added, "was the first time in two years my teeth didn't hurt."

Feedback - Q&A

Hey Bob . Your "You might be a Texan" item today was really a Tennessee "thang."  I grew up in Chattanooga calling all "sodas" by the name "coke."  Then you would ask what kind of "coke": a sprite, a pepsi, a root beer, etc.

I think this came about because coca cola was first bottled in Chattanooga. We moved to Augusta, Georgia (about 200 miles) almost 20 years ago and I still can't bring myself to say "soda" like the natives here!

Just a little FYI. . . Karen R.

Something to Think About
By Jan Tincher

If you feel someone is wrong, and your adrenaline starts pumping, what should you do?

Instead of jumping up and down and yelling foul, why not sit back and ask, "Why do you say that?" Oops, they dig themselves in deeper, saying something wrong in response.

Instead of getting all pumped up again, why not ask, "Would you mind being specific about that?" If you do this instead of trying to prove him or her wrong, it makes them prove themselves or discredit themselves.

You are putting the burden of proof squarely where it belongs -- on their shoulders, not yours. If you keep this in mind, you prevent yourself from the possibility of making a fool of yourself.

And isn't that interesting?
