Blink Of An Eye
by Bob Osgoodby

It has been said that a person's reputation is the most important thing they have. Good, Bad or Indifferent, whatever it is, it will shape their life, as well as their future.

Many people who start a business fall into the "Indifferent" category, as they have not had time to build one. This is one reason people who are starting a business hire a spokesperson. It is normally someone who is well known, and respected in his or her field.

If you intend to do business on the web a good reputation is extremely important. The web is a difficult medium to pursue a business on if you are unknown. That is why it is important to have a web site that gives your prospective customers information about, not only your business, but you as well. A short paragraph or two with a picture will go a long way.

But that is just the beginning. You must also be known on the web as a person who is knowledgeable in your field. There are a number of ways to do this, and exposure is the key. How can you get your name in front of people as an expert.

Some go the "spam" route, which is a mistake. You might get to be well known, but most people have a dislike for this type of email. You just may be building a "bad" reputation, and wind up being someone they consciously avoid. I receive information from forged addresses, concerning recasting my home mortgage, on a daily basis.  These are the last people with whom I would do business.

Writing articles is a good way to get known. Publishers have an ongoing need for fresh articles and normally welcome submissions. A search of the web will quickly find publications, which would be suitable for your submissions. You should also publish your articles at web sites that allow submissions. Many publishers frequent these sites looking for content for their publications. A good place to start is the web site at: http://www.marketing-seek.com where you can easily submit your article.

Publishing your own newsletter also helps. It doesn't have to be long or involved, but it should be published on a definite schedule. There is a lot of different thinking on how frequently it should be published. Some people think that a monthly schedule is a waste of time, as people may forget who you are between publications. Some feel that weekly is OK and others, myself included, feel that the more exposure you have the better.

Whatever frequency you select, it is imperative that it is published on a regular basis. If it is once a week, pick a day that it will be published, and stick with it. If you are not going to publish in any given week, be sure to notify your subscribers in advance so they don't wonder what happened. Building a subscriber base is normally a slow process. You should have a sign-up process on your website.

You can use either a form for this or have them send you an email. A form is the preferred way as it is immediately identifiable as a subscription when it is received. If you don't use a form, then at least list your email address with subscribe in the subject so it doesn't get "trashed" with the rest of the spam you receive.

Use something that will immediately identify it as a submission like mailto:bob@adv-marketing.com?subject=Subscribe - this way it will automatically insert the word "Subscribe" in the subject of the email.

Whatever route you take on your road to building your reputation, probably the most important thing to remember is that the memory of most folks is short, and you will be forgotten the "blink of an eye". There are thousands of new prospects becoming available everyday. If you hope to do business on the web, you must not only build a good reputation, but you must be visible to your prospects on an ongoing and regular basis.

IPOD Under Scrutiny From ITC

According to Creative Technology, the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) will investigate whether the extremely popular iPod device infringes on a patent held by Creative.

Creative, based in Singapore, and its U.S. subsidiary have filed two lawsuits alleging that the iPod infringes on a user-interface patent Creative holds for its own portable music devices. Creative is seeking a permanent cease-and-desist order from the courts against Apple Computer. The ITC, which reviews some patent disputes, will assign the case to an administrative law judge.

After that judge makes a recommendation on the matter, the ITC will decide whether to proceed. The process typically takes between 12 and 15 months.

Are You Chasing Your Visitors Away?
by Terri Seymour

To keep your visitors coming back, the main goals of your website are for visitor participation and benefits. Provide an interesting, beneficial and useful website and they will come back!

If your site is annoying you can be sure they will find another site to visit, never to come back to yours.  Here are some ways you can be sure to annoy your visitors: (they might not annoy all, but probably the majority)

** Frames - Chopping up a site with frames is a great way to get your visitors frustrated.  These frames are very obtrusive and make navigation and reading your site much harder.  They are also disliked by the search engine spiders.

** Overbearing Graphics - Not only are these blinking and flashing graphics distracting and unnecessary, they can also cause your site to download very slowly.  Most people do not have the time to sit and wait for an extremely slow site, and will leave before even knowing what your site has to offer.

** No Contact Information - I cannot stress enough how important it is to have your email address and other contact info on every page.  This will add credibility to your site and always give your visitors a reason to be assured that you can be reached when needed.

** Hard To Navigate -You want your visitors to be able to get around your site without trouble.  Have your links all together in a place that is easily seen.  Have them in the same place on every page.

** Inconsistent Page Design - I have been on some sites where after clicking on a link, I didn't even know if I was at the same site.  The page was totally different and did not have any of the same information or links as the previous page.  After trying to find what I was looking for and not finding it, I left.  Please keep your site design uniform and consistent.  This will make it much easier on your visitors.

** Spelling and Grammar – Always proofread your web pages.   Designing and building a professional website is a waste of time if it reads like a five year old wrote it.  With spell checker, grammar checker, dictionaries, etc. there is no excuse for poorly written web pages!

** Too Many Banners -If you want banners on your site, set up a banner exchange page for this purpose only. Do not have your homepage or other pages so loaded with banners that there isn't room for anything else.

** Hard To Read Text - Do not use fancy text or pale text on a pale background.  The easiest to read is a dark text on a light background.  Also, if you use a textured or print background, be sure that it is not hard on the eyes.  One site I visited had a weave look background that made the text so hard to read, after a few minutes of looking around I had to leave because I was getting a headache.  If you think it is easy to see get a few more opinions just to be sure!

** Music - Music used to be very common on the web. Practically every site you went to had music.  More and more people started realizing that this was a major distraction and annoyance to a lot of people.  If you really want music, have a choice for your visitors.  Let them decide if they want the music.

** Lack of Content -You've got to have content. People visit a website to see what the site has that will benefit them. Useful, helpful, practical content can't be beat! This would include resources, freebies, tips, ideas, information, interaction, contests, etc.  One thing you can do is visit several sites that pertain to your business.  Study these sites and write down what you find annoying.  Write down any reasons you have for leaving the site.  Take note of what you like about these sites.  Incorporate all these findings into creating a sharp, clean, useful website with nothing that will chase away your visitors!

Trivia

Most country music fans associate the song "Crazy," with Patsy Cline. Although Patsy did have the original hit on the song in 1962, it peaked short of becoming number one and only made it to number two on the country music charts. Ray Price released it in 1967 but his version topped out at #73. Linda Ronstadt brought "Crazy" back inside the top 10, when her version made it to #6 in 1977. But it was not until 1985 that "Crazy" finally saw the top of the charts, when Kenny Rogers took it all the way to the top of the music list.

A Little Humor to Start the Week

Leak Repair
=-=-=-=-=-=-=

My husband's skills with do-it-yourself home repairs are at best mediocre. After spending several evenings trying to fix a leak in the bathroom, he finally admitted defeat and called a plumber, who finished the job in ten minutes.

Watching him put away his equipment, my son asked what had been the problem.

"Well," the plumber replied, "seems that your father got hold of some tools..."

-----

Ken and Marjorie finished their breakfast at the retirement home and were relaxing in the library. "You know," said Marjorie "today, in most marriage ceremonies, they don't use the word 'obey' anymore."

"Too bad, isn't it?" retorted Ken. "It used to lend a little humor to the occasion."

-----

My father is a skilled CPA, but is not great at self-promotion. So when an advertising company offered to put my father's business placard in the shopping carts of a supermarket, my dad jumped at the chance. Fully a year went by before we got a call that could be traced to those placards.

"Richard Larson, CPA?" the caller asked.

"That's right," my father answered. "May I help you?"

"Yes," the voice said. "One of your shopping carts is in my yard and I want you to come and get it."

-----

There was an unexpected knock on my door, and like I always do I first opened the peephole and asked, "Who's there?"

"Parcel post, ma'am. I have a package that needs a signature."

"Where's the package?" I asked suspiciously. The deliveryman held it up.

"Could I see some ID?" I said, still not convinced.

"Lady," he replied wearily, "if I wanted to break into your house, I'd probably just use these." And he pulled out the keys I had left in the door.

Feedback - Q&A

Bob – I placed an auto-renew ad to be put on your web site last week, and when I was notified it was there I couldn’t find it. When I enquired where it was, you pointed me right to it. No wonder I couldn’t find it.  I was looking for the ad I submitted. You rewrote it and did a beautiful job – thank you, thank you, than you.

Bernice

-----

Bernice – You had submitted a “canned ad” supplied by your affiliate, and I already had an ad on the web with the exact same wording.  Your ad would have been right below the other ad – not good.

Since I always check the web site address to ensure that it is correct, I went there to find out what it was all about and wrote some new copy. As a matter of course, whenever an ad is received either for the web or in our Newsletters, I always check for grammar and spelling. If it needs it, I may also “tweak” it a bit.

Something to Think About
By Jan Tincher

There are many ways to put courage in action.

One way to put courage in action is to conquer worry. Worry is a form of negative goal setting.

When you worry, you are dwelling on, talking about, and vividly imagining exactly what you don't want to happen.

If you worry long enough and hard enough about something, you are going to attract it into your life. The great tragedy is that even if the situation you are worrying about does not materialize, your health and your emotions will suffer, regardless.

The fact is, most of the things people worry about never happen. And you will have ruined your health for what? Nothing, right?

Start now, whenever you feel yourself starting to worry, put a smile on your face, straighten your shoulders, and face life straight on. And doesn't that feel great?

A bicycle headlight mostly allows others to see you. However, some of the brighter lights do aid nighttime vision. Most lights range in wattage from 2.4 to 20.
Police-department bikes in the United States use a minimum of 15 watts.
