Level Playing Field
by Bob OsgoodbyMost of your larger companies have recognized the value of brand recognition. McDonalds has their arches, Goodyear has its blimp and AOL has its distinctive pyramid.
While many people maintain that the Internet creates a level playing field with the larger companies, brand recognition is often overlooked. Larger companies do the majority of their advertising offline. Sure, they will reference their web sites in their ads, but are not completely dependant on web advertising.
Net based entrepreneurs must also create this brand recognition if they hope to succeed. This can be done in a number of ways. Many people who have local businesses, can promote their web site with their web address on their letter head or business card, but these are not the people we're talking about here. To them, the web site is simply an offshoot of their existing "brick and mortar" business.
We're referring to people trying to compete on the national or international level. There are a number of companies that have done this. Remember the old "Cookie Cutter". Their "dumb little ad" was their brand recognition. Anyone who has been around the web for awhile would have immediately recognized their ads. But this may be a case where the brand recognition worked against you. Many people adopt a "been there - seen that" attitude and immediately "click on by".
So what do you do to try to achieve your brand recognition? First - a consistency of ad copy will go a long way. It is suggested by most advertising gurus that it takes 5 to 7 exposures to an ad before someone may look further. If you change your ad copy every time you post it, people will not identify with your ad.
If you use the same ad in many different places, people will start to identify with your ad, and may ultimately take a further look. But that of course raises a dilemma. How do you know if you have a good ad that will draw, or one that needs to be tweaked? Experimentation is the key here. See which ads immediately get your attention and try to model your ads after them. People will begin to identify with your ad, and after seeing it and number of times, and in different places, will usually investigate further.
After identifying a "killer ad", the smart merchant then carries that same theme through to their web site. Again, consistency is the key here.
While you may not have your arches, or own a blimp, your brand recognition is no less important than it is to the "big guys". Unquestionably, it is one of the more important things you should be trying to attain if you hope to compete on a level playing field.

In The News
Squabble Over Cell Phones In School Goes To Court
Parents of public school kids in New York City have filed a lawsuit to overturn a ban on cell phones in schools. The ban, which was originally put in place in 1988 and concerned primarily pagers, was not widely enforced until recently, when schools added X-ray machines to help keep schools safe.
Under the ban, cell phones can be confiscated and only returned to parents, who must go to the school to pick them up. Parents objected, saying cell phones represent a safety issue for kids and that the chancellor of schools overstepped his authority in banning the devices. School officials said students use cell phones for cheating, making drug deals, taking photos in locker rooms, and other inappropriate activities.
The parents hoping to overturn the ban are looking to a case from the early 1990s in which the courts ruled that the school system went beyond its authority in distributing condoms to students. The argument, which the court accepted, was that such activity is properly under the purview of parents, not the school. Opponents of the cell phone ban contend that having a cell phone is similarly the decision of parents rather than school administrators.
On Reconditioned Or Refurbished Notebooks
by Richard KeirWhat exactly is a reconditioned or refurbished notebook computer? Depending on where you are buying, it normally should be a used - or possibly a returned notebook - that has been factory rebuilt. A refurbished notebook computer is basically a cheap, used (maybe) and renovated computer that satisfies all your performance and portability needs and provides all the advantages you would get on buying a new notebook - such as warranty and technical support. This is critical - do not buy a so-called reconditioned or refurbished notebook computer if it does not have the same warranty or guarantee as a new machine.
I'm writing this article right now on a factory reconditioned notebook that I purchased well over two years ago at a very substantial savings over the same machine "new". It came with a full factory warranty and it has performed like a champ. Granted, I was nervous when I first bought it, but I'm now convinced that if you can find a reconditioned or refurbished notebook that has the features you're looking for, you'd be foolish to pay full price -- the discounts are incredible, and the products are functionally identical.
If you just need a computer that is portable, one that you can use to perform simple computing tasks, why spend a fortune in buying a new notebook from some well-known brand? Look for a refurbished notebook computer instead. You will get a notebook that will give you the required performance at a much lower price - and it will still be covered by a warranty.
There is normally a difference between "refurbished" and "reconditioned" (or factory reconditioned). Refurbished usually means that this is an older notebook that has been used and then reconditioned - often by a third party. Depending on the warranty being offered by the refurbisher, this could be an excellent deal. As always, it depends on whether the refurbished notebook meets your specifications. If so, and the price - and guarantee - are good, then you have nothing to lose.
Reconditioned machines, when you find them in a retail outlet, usually are returns that had some problem, went back to the manufacturer, were fixed and now are available at a very substantial discount but have the full 'new' machine factory/manufacturer guarantee. This can be a huge savings and an incredible deal. Often these reconditioned notebooks sell at a discount of 50% or more - and they may even be current models.
Maybe I've just been lucky, but my experience with factory reconditioned notebooks has convinced me that it's foolish to dump a bunch of dollars into a new machine if an equally capable refurbished notebook is available. After all, every reconditioned notebook was once a new notebook that had some kind of problem causing its return. If the factory did its job, then the reconditioned notebook is less likely to have a problem than a new model. And if it does have a problem, you will still have the warranty that new notebooks have.
Students, and of course their parents, who are on the look out for a low-priced notebook to meet school needs, should definitely consider buying a refurbished notebook computer. Education is expensive enough without throwing away money by paying top dollar for a notebook when an equivalent refurbished or reconditioned notebook would serve as well. Check out the computer shops in the local area - or even check online sites like Amazon.com that may showcase a good refurbished notebook computer on sale.
So before you spend - possibly waste - a lot of money buying a brand new notebook that might have features you will never need and accessories you never asked for, look into the possibilities of a suitable and low-priced reconditioned or refurbished notebook computer.

Ball Markers
=-=-=-=-=-=-=A golfer walks into the Pro Shop at the local course and asks the golf pro if they sell ball markers.
The golf pro says, "Yes, they are just $1.00 each. "
The guy gives the golf pro a dollar and says he'll take one.
The golf pro opens the register, puts the dollar in the tray and with a big smile hands the guy a quarter.

The Manhattan Commuter train was packed. Suddenly there was a jingle on the floor. Most necks were craned. One elderly gentleman, however, bent down and picked something up. He then asked, "Did anyone drop a half dollar?"
"I did," answered three men at once.
"Well," said the elderly gent with a smile, "here's a dime of it."

The preacher was having a heart-to-heart talk with a backslider of his flock, whose drinking of moonshine invariably led to quarreling with his neighbors, and occasional shotgun blasts at some of them.
"Can't you see, Ben," intoned the parson, "that not one good thing comes out of this drinking?"
"Well, I sort of disagree there," replied the backslider. "It makes me miss the folks I shoot at."
-----
While reviewing math symbols with my second-grade pupils, I drew a greater-than (>) and a less-than (<) sign on the chalkboard and asked, "Does anyone remember what these mean?"
A few moments passed, and then a boy confidently raised his hand. "One means fast-forward," he exclaimed, "and the other means rewind!"
