If you hate AOL
by Bob Osgoodby

Or, if you like it, entrepreneurs and marketers can learn something from their latest move. At one point, they had the lions share of the market.  But things have been changing.

AOL was the first internet based ISP and services such as Prodigy, who had a proprietary system, and were slow to react, saw their market share plummet. Prodigy, who was one of the first online services saw their subscriber base dwindle from over 8 million to just a few hundred thousand.

At this point, AOL doesn't have much of a choice. Its’ domestic subscription count peaked at 26.7 million in the fall of 2002, but has fallen every single quarter. At this point AOL is down to just 17.7 million. Like Prodigy, it was too slow to keep up with changing times. To make up for lost revenue, they failed their faithful subscribers by doing away with many of the features such as their discussion forums and community leaders.

AOL said it would offer back the old e-mail addresses to the millions who canceled their service in the past two years and all email will be free, even for new subscribers. Why you might ask would they do this. Simple – their primary revenue is from advertising. The more subscribers (free or paid) they have, the more they can charge their advertisers.

But is it too little too late? Time will tell.

Anyone in business, whether it be “online” or “brick and mortar,” must pay attention to changes that are occurring. They must also pay attention to what their competitors are doing. Now does this mean you continually change your approach or your advertising? No.

The change that AOL is making is drastic. Most people don’t react well to sudden changes, and this very well could signal the end of them as the dominant ISP.

If you feel it is necessary to institute changes to keep current with your competition or the changing marketplace,  your changes should be implemented gradually. Like in the supermarket, people get used to where things are and continue to shop there because they know where everything is. It is really upsetting to many shoppers when they go to the store one day, and find that everything has been moved. They are no longer comfortable with the store, and are a prime candidate at that point for changing stores.

If the supermarket wished to change their layout for whatever reason, if they did it in small steps and made the changes over a number of months, it wouldn’t be as traumatic to their customers.

I usually recommend a five year plan. Where do you want your business to be five years from now? What steps must you take to get there? If you see that change is necessary, and you do have a good business plan, change can be implemented gradually. This way you don’t run the risk of losing your existing customer base.

In The News

China Closes Liberal Web Site

Government officials in China have taken another step in limiting what Internet users in the country can access, causing an uproar among intellectuals and others critical of the Communist Party.

During the past week, access inside China to the Century China Web site has been cut off, prompting a petition that accuses the government of trying to control public opinion. More than 100 outspoken individuals--both inside the country and abroad--have signed the petition, which was sent by e-mail to the media.

The petition states, in part, "The shutdown of Century China is just another instance of the Chinese government suppressing the freedom of its people." It also describes the Century China Web site as "the one spiritual home we had in the cyberworld."

Don't Tell Me What I Can't Do!
by Michael Murray

Have you ever watched ABC’s hit TV show Lost? My favorite episode is titled "Walkabout". In it, we learn that the mysterious outdoorsman Locke was actually paralyzed from the waist down before getting on the doomed 815 flight which crashed and, somehow, gave him the use of his legs back.

Locke was actually planning to go on a Walkabout, which is a sacred outdoor adventure. But the leader, seeing Locke’s limitation, forbade him to go. Angrily Locke shouted "Don’t tell me what I can’t do!" We then flash forward to the plane crash, and see Locke on the ground, slowly moving his legs. Then stand up. And walk.

You can probably guess where I’m going with this, but before you write this off as another "motivational" article, stay with me for a minute.

I’ve had many "Locke Moments" in my life. Although I’ve never said his line to anyone before, I’ve sure thought it. When you’re born with the umbilical cord wrapped around your neck and barely live, you get used to people telling you what you can’t do.

First, doctors told my parents that if I did live I wouldn’t be active at all. I’d basically be a vegetable. They told my parents to put me in a home. They didn’t listen. "Don’t tell us what he can’t do!"

So, they took me home and it turned out that mentally, I was fine. I had Cerebral Palsy and doctors said I’d never walk. Well, they were right... for the first 7 years of my life I crawled around on my knees. I went through physical therapy multiple times a week and was quite determined for a kid. At 7 years old, at my grandparents’ house, I took my first steps, to everyone’s amazement, including myself. "Don’t tell me what I can’t do!"

As I got older, people urged me to get into technical side of computers and get a good job. I hated that stuff. I wanted to be an entrepreneur. People warned me about this. It’s too risky. But I pursued ventures both online and offline, and I’ve made money in both. In fact, next month I’ll be selling a 4-acre piece of land. I’ll net $144,000 on the deal. Glad I took that risk. "Don’t tell me what I can’t do!"

What about you? Do you get ridiculed by your friends and family when you tell them about your Internet dreams? It’s very common. The simple fact is that loved ones who do this to you have good intentions. They don’t want to see you get hurt, ripped off, or scammed. They just, quite honestly, have no idea what they’re talking about.

I’ve long since giving up on trying to explain what I do online to friends and extended family. Even trying to explain simple concepts such as email marketing can lead to comments such as "Oh, so you spam people?" It’s frustrating, to say the least. It hurts because these are the people who you’d expect to be on your side.

Don’t let these people get you down. Ask yourself one question: Do I believe that what I’m doing will eventually lead to financial success? Whether it’s creating e-books, doing affiliate marketing, making content sites, writing articles, or whatever it may be. If you can honestly say yes, then keep plugging away and never give up.

The next time a loved one says you’re crazy for trying to make money online, don’t get mad. Don’t get defensive. You don’t have to defend anything. You know what you’re doing. They have no clue. Just think about Locke, getting up from that crash site and walking, and simply say "Don’t tell me what I can’t do."

Boost Your Web Site Traffic

Need a quick way to boost your web site traffic? Try using on-line auction sites. This is how it works: List a product or service at far below its worth. Set up ad copy and a link to your site on the bidding screen. This is a good cost-effective means of bringing targeted traffic to your site. As long as your page does a good job of covering the product or service listed on the auction site, you can get lots of inquiries.

A Little Humor to Start the Week

Healthful Place
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Mr. Peterson, a tourist from Toronto, arrived in Barbados. In an airport taxi cab, Peterson asked the driver, "Say, is this really a healthful place?"

"It sure is," the cabby replied. "When I came here I couldn't say one word. I had hardly any hair on my head. I didn't have the strength to walk across a room, and I had to be lifted out of bed."

"That's wonderful!" said the tourist, "How long have you been here?"

I was born here."

-----

Betty was soon to be married. More than anything, she wanted to wear the wedding dress her mother was married in. Betty's mother was beaming with pride as she gave her consent. Later in the evening, the family gathered in the living room to wait while Betty tried on the dress.

When Betty entered the room, there was a chorus of approval. The dress fit perfectly and looked wonderful on her. Tears ran down the face of Betty's mother. Seeing this, Betty said, "Don't worry Mom, you're not losing a daughter, your gaining a son."

"Forget about that!" she said with a sob. "I used to fit into that dress!"

-----

A young corporate executive was sent a ransom note saying that he was to bring $50,000 to the 17th hole of the country club at 10 o'clock the next day if he ever wanted to see his wife alive again.

He didn't arrive until almost 12:30. A masked man stepped out from behind some bushes and growled, "What took ya so long? You're over two hours late."

"Hey! Give me a break." whined the executive. "I have a 27 handicap."

-----

A mother was dropping her son off at a friend's house. She said to him, "Will you be good while Mommy's gone?"

The boy replied, "If you give me a dollar!"

His mother shook her head and said to him, "Why can't you be good for nothing like your father?!"
